MSNBC Host Chuck Todd on gun rights: “That’s a different America”

posted at 5:02 pm on December 17, 2012 by

The entire landscape of political discussion shifted in less than 48 hours when it comes to 2nd Amendment rights this weekend, spurred in no small part by the President’s none-too-subtle injection of politics into what began as a testimonial and eulogy for those lost at Newtown on Friday. Before the sun had even risen on the eastern seaboard, the media was grinding out the discussion which many of us saw coming some time ago. You can bet that we’ll be having plenty to say on this subject at Hot Air this week, but let’s kick things off with a brief clip from the end of Chuck Todd’s Monday episode of The Daily Rundown. After the basic banter, his guests begin discussing how it must be an automatic given that people in America are already on board with significant changes to gun control laws. Chuck’s response – shown in this brief clip and transcribed after – lets you know what we’re going to be facing in the weeks and months to come.

I understand this is a short clip, but the rest of the conversation was essentially about the “need for gun control change” now. To provide the full context, you are invited to watch the entire segment. But here’s the part we featured:

Emphasis mine:

Chuck Todd: … having this discussion in Washington. The question is, does it last after the New Year? It may last this week before Christmas.

Guest: There is clear public opinion … public opinion is behind it. People are behind it. This is the right moment…

CT: There’s public opinion in general and there’s public opinion in the Republican congressional districts. Which is a different America. Anyway, thank you all. Thank you for the short … there… we have a busy morning.

This is one short taste of what is barreling down the tracks toward us like a freight train. Among the many memes which will be hoisted up the flag pole is the idea that any of you toothless, southern, probably inbred hicks who still wish to cling to your guns are “from a different America” which is somehow out of step with what all good Americans should know after Newtown.

This is shaping up to be a tremendously difficult period for Second Amendment advocates, and we’ll have much more on the subject to come. This was just an opening volley.

Funny. I remember people like Sarah Palin getting trashed on networks like MSDNC when she talked about “real America” out on the campaign trail. I guess it’s ok for Chuck Todd to use similar language since he’s directing his insults at flyover country.

Except of course that it didn’t happen in the South, it happened in liberal Ground Zero. But, that’s different.

if only we had a leader that would be out in front of the cameras explaining how liberal gun control laws caused more deaths in Ct than less. the strict gun control laws of Ct the gun free zones BOTH CAUSED THOSE TEACHERS TO BE DISARMED AND EASY PREY FOR THE SHOOTER.

And it will countinue to happen in the undefended areas. Sort of a reversal of robbing banks because thats where the money is.

Can we just finally be a different America and throw off the moochers? Bright red swath in the southeast we’re all just too stupid and backwards to survive on our own so why don’t you enlightened libs just leave us?

John_Locke on December 17, 2012 at 5:31 PM

I live in one of them southern hick states with some of the most liberal gun laws in the nation, and a bunch of crazy yahoo gun toters. Us Michiganders don’t take to kindly to these Northerners telling us how to live.

These crack smoking idiots really need to get out more. Illinois, California, and New york the extreme exceptions, not the rule.

It is sad and frightening that there are so many who would so willingly give up a constitution right.
It’s also sad that the education system in this country produces so many who don’t have critical thinking skills and can surmise only one possible solution to this problem.

The correct America, and the continually crazy Right America. We got it, Chuck.

Enough of this country is so screwed up, I`m afraid we`ll lose this fight. :( I hope I`m wrong.

More of the country, and hence a larger amount of the population is in Republican congrssional districts.

So There’s public opinion in general and there’s public opinion in the Republican congressional districts dosen’t make sense.

There’s public opinion and there’s the minority opinion in Democratic congrssional districts.

I don’t know, we got The Won for another four years. The only thing we have going for us has been the recent SCOTUS rulings.

Cindy Munford on December 17, 2012 at 6:27 PM

I know the usual suspects will jump up and down demanding guns and gun owners be punished. Will anyone ask about the role single motherhood or mental illness has played in any of these tragedies?

BO campaigned on gun control in ’08.

Since then:
- BO authorized carry on Amtrak and in National Parks,
- gun crime prosecutions are down 40%,
- BO and the DOJ are bobbing and weaving on arming drug gangs in Mexico,
- BO is trying to keep the lid on running guns from Libya to Syrian Islamists, who have sent them on to AQ and other terrorist groups.

Reid, even including his most recent speech on the floor of the senate, is less than enthusiastic.

Most likely is reinstating the assault gun ban that expired several years ago. They can all pat themselves on the back for solving the problem and go back to sidling up to the NRA for $$$ and endorsements.

I really think the Left is making a serious mistake pushing this so hard. They have no clue about what the American people feel on the issue of the Second Amendment. It’s the price of living in their Manhattan/Hollywood cocoon. They just don’t get it. In the meantime, this will bring all wings of the GOP together.

Tremendously difficult?

It’s NOT DIFFICULT AT ALL.

NO CHANGE IN THE LAWS.

What did IQs in this country just collapse? Does all reason go out the window and we just make laws based upon righteous indignation now?

Oh wait, of course we do? Tax legislation and revenus laws for millions of people and TRILLIONS of dollars are hashed out by two people in private who will then force all of our representatives in line to rubber stamp.

I will NOT give up my guns or my liberties or my rights to some panty-twisted whining crybabies who can’t seem to deal with the realities of life. 26 children are dead. Yeah, I mourn. But Our savior in chief has killed MORE CHILDREN WITH DRONE STRIKES.

Either we grow up now or we might as well just put the great experiment to bed and let our “betters” coddle us like sheep from womb to the tomb.

Skywise on December 17, 2012 at 9:07 PM

I just want to know what happens after the ban goes into effect. They want us all to “Turn them all in” and maybe 1/4 of the weapons make it to the government’s hands. We all know the only way to make this work is to make possession illegal.

woodbutcher on December 17, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Going to split this country apart if they try the unthinkable. It won’t be pretty.

Meanwhile…still waiting for an explanation regarding all the shootings in Chicago. Must be the liberal gun policies…what? Guns banned in Chicago you say? Damn.

You know who talked a lot about two Americas, John Edwards.

There’s going to be a rush to buy guns. How’s that for public opinion?

Blake on December 17, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Except of course that it didn’t happen in the South, it happened in liberal Ground Zero. But, that’s different.

That’s easy to explain: The reason the peaceful liberal states with restrictive gun laws are so violent is because of all the guns the flow from the backwards southern states. The only way to fix it is if EVERYBODY is forced to live under the same restrictive gun laws that peaceful northern cities like New York, Chicago, and Washington D.C. live under.

This is really how liberals think. I was arguing having a discussion with my liberal brother on getting people people to buy smaller, more efficient cars when I pointed out that they have a poorer survival record in accidents, so reasonable people would prefer to drive one that was safer in that situation. His “solution” (of course!) was to outlaw big SUVs and pickup trucks so that everybody is forced to be equal on the road.

You just can’t make this stuff up.

I am reminded of a dialog which took place a few years back, I think in the comments at Kim du Toit’s site.

“You gun nuts should go start your own country!”

“We did. Who let you in?”

Heh, that’s great. Kim’s site was probably the greatest influence on my 2a views.

As if they have the balls to tell us all to turn them in voluntarily. You all sound so beaten down. We have the power in this discussion…. 200,000,000 guns. Act like it! Tell them to pound sand. Who cares what these communists want? They created the breeding ground for crazy violent bezerker outbursts by forcing their multicultural, topsy turvy, “utopian” ideas upon the populace.

COME AND GET THEM CHUCK TODD.

Rep. Louie Gohmert from TX isn’t a household name, but he appeared on Fox News Sunday, and told Wallace without hesitation that he wished the principal had been packing so that she could have blown the gunman’s head off rather than be left to ineffectively reach for the gunman’s gun. Wallace didn’t get snarky or huffy, because I think he actually knows about the stats on gun-controls laws. Nevertheless, I don’t think Gohmert’s response was the meely mouthed one he was expecting. You should look for the clip.

How can it be the “intelligent position” that Adam Lanza gets to decide whether or not 300 Million Americans are to be permitted to keep their Constitutional rights?

Haiku Guy on December 18, 2012 at 7:48 AM

Whats amazing to me is how many people think that the Constitution, that basic laws should be over thrown by creating a wave of emotion. Just what are laws? That might be the big question, and it might be the issue that is really at stake. Are our laws to be made by mobs?

Perhaps that is the end game since they seem to do a better job of creating and controlling mobs. Until of course the mob turns on them. Perhaps the end game is more chaos. Why let a good crises go to waste, evil is afoot.
