This is old news. There were articles decades ago about taking babies in very early infancy and literally tossing them into pools. Very early on, we humans still have some instinct where we involuntarily recall not to inhale when we’re in a pool of fluid. Such babies can swim underwater and come up to breathe on their own.

Batteries not included.

I didn’t see them swim. I saw them floating on their backs and randomly kick their legs every now and then.

My daughter has been in the water (not constantly, of course, but close) since she was 7 months old. Sometimes I think she’s more comfortable in the water than out…

You are correct, sir.

Babies float naturally and when submerged (they need help submerging because they’re like little floating corks), hold their breath instinctively.

I worked with infants as a pool swim and water safety instructor. I taught them the “rollover” method whereby I intentionally submerged the baby (in front of the parents, I might add) and they would float to the surface, role over on their backs and kick to a wall or steps.

It’s also true that fear of the water is a learned behavior. That’s why it’s so important to learn how to be water safe at the earliest age possible.

It is more a point that parents do think water is a huge risk to children.
