College demands construction crew remove “men working” sign, for diversity

posted at 1:04 pm on December 3, 2012 by

Eliana Johnson at NRO:

A construction crew working on the campus of Ohio’s Sinclair Community College was forced to halt work until it removed a “Men Working” sign that was deemed “sexist” by a college administrator. A spokesman for the college told National Review Online that the incident, which occurred on November 21, stemmed from the school’s “deep commitment to diversity,” and that it takes that commitment “very seriously.”

The question is, of course, if there was anyone other than men working there. If not, the sign would be true, and something that’s a fact can’t be “sexist”.

The tolerance from the left is overwhelming.

Sign==Someone working here, you decide who it is?

My favorite construction-related sign has always been “Men Working in Trees.”

But “Men and Women Working in Trees” has an intriguing quality.

I as thinking precisely the same thing. If there is a woman working on the crew, then I might be willing to acquiese to their request. If it’s only men working on the crew, then I would state the sign is accurate, since no women are currently working on the construction crew, and if the school administrator still wants it removed then he/she can bend over because I’ve got a great place to put it where no one will see it.

gravityman on December 3, 2012 at 1:25 PM

This just in…Construction crew at Sinclair Community College has been fined by OSHA for not posting “Men Working” signs as required by law.

/sarc

That didn’t happen, but would it surprise anyone if it did?

xblade on December 3, 2012 at 1:27 PM

And here it is…

“The incident occurred the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, as an all-male construction crew from the company JCrane was working in an area of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio”

You can’t make this $hit up.

gravityman on December 3, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Why are all they so up in arms about the “Men” part ?
What proof is there that whoever it was, was “working” ?

Jabberwock on December 3, 2012 at 1:33 PM

Can you imagine the mush headed product Sinclair Community College is turning out?

Yep. That would have been my answer as foreman, “We can’t have that sign up? OK, boys, pack it up, this job is done!”
“What do you mean? You haven’t finished!”
“You have just told me that I can’t post federally required signs for doing my job. Therefore I can’t do the job. There will be a phone call to the contract office about breach of contract by the close of business today. Can I have your name and position here, as well as a phone number so I can properly reference this incident?”
“But, wha…. huh? What do you…? Wait! Ummmmm…. No, you can’t! Noooooo. I… uh……”
It would probably get resolved in short order.

Larry Summers would probably beg to differ.

This is just ridiculous. This sh!t has to stop!
Political correctness is a scourge on the world, and the people who promote it and live obsessively by it need to be publicly shamed and ridiculed as the wackos they are.

retiredeagle on December 3, 2012 at 2:18 PM

A sign reading “Nobody working here” would usually be more accurate.

(Sorry if that offends the shovel-leaners out there…)

Marcola on December 3, 2012 at 2:24 PM

It wasn’t the word “MEN” that appalls the libtards.

They are appalled by the word…

Wait for it…
Wait for it…

WORKING!

WestTexasBirdDog on December 3, 2012 at 2:28 PM

The good news is that anyone who could be offended by a “Men Working” sign would be completely incapable of reproducing.

Wallythedog on December 3, 2012 at 2:29 PM

……stemmed from the school’s “deep commitment to diversity,” and that it takes that commitment “very seriously.”

The only “deep commitment” this college has is to insanity and stupidity.

djm1992 on December 3, 2012 at 2:31 PM

This is what happens when people from the real world, with real jobs, clash with the bubble these worthless college campuses create.

Further proof that Steyn’s election post-mortem (by way of quoting one Sir Richard Mottram) was correct:

“We’re all f***ed. I’m f***ed. You’re f***ed. The whole department’s f***ed. It’s been the biggest c**k-up ever and we’re all completely f***ed.”

Beat me to it.
If its a government or union construction crew, I’d say “working” is the more inaccurate or objectionable word on the sign.

dentarthurdent on December 3, 2012 at 3:11 PM

Self-absorbed, politically correct (real world incorrect) libtards.
Is Bob costas on this school’s board of directors?

dentarthurdent on December 3, 2012 at 3:14 PM

In the real world both the college administrator and spokesman for the college should have been fired. I wonder if it was a “spokesman” or if that was just NRO.

What they may be up in arms over is that there wasn’t any women on the crew. For diversity’s sake, the company must now go hire women and put them on the crew. Doesn’t matter if none apply for the job, one must have a diverse work force.

Mitoch55 on December 3, 2012 at 3:23 PM

Forget it. We’re done. Put a fork in us. The fat lady has sung. Wait. Can I say that? Let me change it. The lady has sung. OH WAIT. Can’t say that either. The person has sung. That’s better. It was a nice country for a while.

Mitoch55 on December 3, 2012 at 3:23 PM

Don’t know if you realize how true that is. I have a cousin who is a union electrician in Cincinnati. A few years ago, we were talking about the Rust Belt, and what a tough time he was having supporting his family. But in the course of the conversation, he told me of an incident that took place after his local was accused of not having any women electricians. He said they had union members on the sidewalk in front of their hall stopping every female pedestrian who passed, asking them to please apply to become electrician apprentices.

Can’t make this stuff up…

Nick_Angel on December 3, 2012 at 4:17 PM

Have you noticed how it’s incorrect to use gender terms unless it’s something bad that was done by a man. If police stop crime then it’s “police officers”, but if it’s rape then a man committed rape. Firemen become firefighters, but muggers are still referred to as male. Everything is gender neutral unless it casts men in a bad light.

Way back in the early 70′s, at my little Quaker College, a freshmen course, excuse me, a first year course entitled “Man in the 20th Century” was changed to “Being Human in the 20th Century” after objections by a feminist professor. My suggestion for all new signs?

“Workers Working”.

(Humans Working just don’t have the same cachet Damn I love me some Liberal Arts Edumacashun!)

BigAlSouth on December 3, 2012 at 5:24 PM

This is still the english language; male is still the default gender for a non-specific, human subject. For example, it is “He who laughs last, laughs best.” This aphorism is especially apt when one is confronted with the ignorant indignation of an alleged educator.

To borrow from John Mortimer, “she, who must be obeyed” shall always be ripe for ridicule.

It is really hard to think of something witty when the college administration has gone to such great lengths to parody themselves. One can only point and laugh.

STL_Vet on December 3, 2012 at 5:27 PM

FINALLY! When I used to work construction, we all used to joke that the “men working” signs would be eventually found to be sexist… HA! Gotta email this to the guys, I’m sure they’ll get a huge kick out of it.

Timin203 on December 3, 2012 at 6:04 PM

These people have WAY too much time on their hands. I remember the days when restaurants struggled to come up with a gender neutral term for “waitresses and waiters.” For a while, we were called “waitrons,” how stupid is that? Then some bright bulb came up with “servers” which is actually perfectly accurate and adequate. Too much energy spent on people’s feelings.

Which takes you from snicker-worthy to gaffaw-inducing, and inexplicably heightens my situational awareness such that I check my wallet, back toward a wall, and note all exit paths.

I’d also like to thank men for doing this sort of work in much greater proportion than womyn. You keep the air conditioners conditioning, men, making it possible for many more women to sit around with advanced degrees, banging out memos about your inherent flaws, in safety and comfort.

I propose national Male appreciation day. All men will be allowed to leave the mines and visit Cloud City, and there should be feasting.

The workers don’t care, it’s paid time off till they get a new sign. Just order a custom sign from china and have it shipped via boat.
