Video: The Brazilian ghost prank

posted at 3:56 pm on November 27, 2012 by

Viral video fun on a slow news day via Ace and dri. Exploiting psychological trauma for lulz lends this a distinctly Japanese air, but in the end it just isn’t weird enough to be Japanese.

In the unlikely case that this isn’t all staged, it is a very stupid idea. Older people can easily have a heart attack and that little girl is very lucky nobody reacted immediately by beating the cr4p out of her.

Yeah, I don’t get why anyone falls for this. I would immediately started looking for where she came from.

This is amazing.

All true.

You know what would really be fun…A WALKING DEAD THREAD.

Blake on November 27, 2012 at 4:28 PM

It’s funny, but not funny. And if you scare someone into a heart attack, it’s manslaughter. That’s not funny. Of course, if you put an apostrophe after man, you get “man’s laughter”. But I digress.

I was going to post something similar.

A colleague and I brought this up as a Torts Law question if the kid was hit. We came to the conclusion that a tort suit against the prank victims would be unsuccessful. Whoever did this put that little girl in actual danger.

Meric1837 on November 27, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Ever want to see a little girl get slapped?

Abby Adams on November 27, 2012 at 4:52 PM

So many ways this could go wrong…

lexhamfox on November 27, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Seriously?

This show is based in Brazil, where they do not have a surplus of lawyers eagerly waiting to sue someone.

There are also cultural differences to be taken into consideration.

Lighten up people …

PolAgnostic on November 27, 2012 at 5:04 PM

All I could think of was the other video where the guy pops out of a Halloween display on a porch and gets his bell rung.

Also, please someone send Brazil some other laugh tracks. They only have the one clip, apparently.

PolAgnostic on November 27, 2012 at 5:04 PM

Yeah it’s all fun and games until someone has a massive heart attack. For some people, the elevator fritzing out and going dark would be enough for that to happen. I agree that that young girl is being put in a dangerous position, no matter how funny the audience thinks this skit is.

And no, I don’t believe cultural differences are sufficient to excuse aspects of this prank. It is a very bad thing waiting to happen. Imagine your mom or your wife being subjected to this. What would be your first thought?

CitizenEgg on November 27, 2012 at 5:17 PM

I would not be amused.

Cindy Munford on November 27, 2012 at 5:27 PM

It would never happen in the U.S., too many lawsuits…this is third world humor…

right2bright on November 27, 2012 at 5:42 PM

I was entertained.

Salted Meats on November 27, 2012 at 5:47 PM

But your honor, how was my client to know it was NOT a ghost? I ask the ladies and gentlemen of the jury, if you saw a small girl in a nightie with messy hair in an elevator holding a teddy bear, which one of you wouldn’t shoot her full of lead?

Salted Meats on November 27, 2012 at 5:47 PM

But would you have been entertained if you had been in the elevator?

Cindy Munford on November 27, 2012 at 6:12 PM

Either this is complete BS, or Brazilians are extremely stupid. Or both.

Cindy Munford on November 27, 2012 at 6:12 PM

I grew up watching Allen Funt and Candid Camera, which really spoiled a lot of stuff for me. Something like that wouldn’t spook me at all.

I don’t believe in ghosts, witches, vampires, the boogeyman, zombies, or UFOs. Still undecided about Santa, though. (Its the cookies….can’t figure out how the cookies disappear on Christmas Eve)

BobMbx on November 27, 2012 at 9:50 PM

You would think one of the passengers would notice that the elevator isn’t moving…

Are we really sure this is from Latin American television? I didn’t see anywhere near enough cleavage and miniskirts.

By the way, AP, that Japanese “weird enough” link…HO-LEE SHEE-ITE. Even Mr. Plinkett found it too creepy.

Cindy Munford on November 27, 2012 at 6:12 PM

I dig thrill rides and I can take a joke. I’ve made it through the first four years of Obama, the elevator would be a walk in the park.

.
My wife, who is the most easily scared person in the world, thought the video was hilarious AND “a good lesson that people need to be more aware of their environments”.

She also wanted to know, “Why didn’t anyone just HUG the little girl?”

PolAgnostic on November 27, 2012 at 11:01 PM

what how is this funny other people terrified horrified this is f’ng stupid
