Senator Broadwell?

posted at 11:01 am on November 15, 2012 by

A tidbit from Time magazine’s new cover story on l’affaire Petraeus (via Political Wire):

Nor was Broadwell without a larger plan. After running with Lance Armstrong in July, she volunteered her secret purpose to at least six new acquaintances at the Aspen conference. That evening, over drinks, she told a small group that she had been arguing with her mentor about the direction of her career. Republican moneymen, she said, had approached her about a Senate run in North Carolina. She was tempted. Petraeus, she said in an irritated tone, rejected the idea out of hand. What was her position, he asked, on abortion? Climate change? Gun control? Gay marriage? Tax cuts? Social Security vouchers? Her answers, he told her, would not fit either party, and she should not sell herself out.

That seems a lot crazier now than it really is. Superficially she would have made an appealing candidate: Military vet, West Point grad, postgraduate degree from Harvard, published author, mom. She hadn’t held political office before, which would have made the Senate a longer shot than a run for the House, but then neither had John Edwards when he was elected to the Senate from North Carolina. I’d be curious to know who those Republican moneymen were and how she ended up on their radar. Evidently it wasn’t Petraeus who put her there, although maybe the simple fact of her association with him did.

Speaking of published author, if you’ve been wondering why Petraeus’s biographer needed a co-author to tell his story, this brutal Boston Globe piece might help explain.

Well I can think of a couple of reasons to vote for her. But otherwise, nothing else peaked my interest.

Thank you, folks. I’m here all night. Don’t forget to tip your waiter.

Democrats can be elected in spite of just about any baggage. Republicans, not so much. Sorry, Mrs. Broadwell, but it’s just not going to work.

I think Petraeus had a good take on a senate run by her. By resume she would have been a good candidate. But it’s clear from the group they were all running in that she would be a very poor fit for North Carolina. On top of it she was not a NC native.

I would say any Republican moneymen who approached her must have been very liberal ones and not too bright.

Just because she said it doean’t make it true.

She has a husband and two kids in Charlotte NC, is attending school in Mass and London, and traveling to the mideast and Tampa to interview, ahem, her subject? I don’t care who you are, something or someone is getting neglected.

Do you have a reading comprehension problem? Where exactly do I mention Petraeus? It’s sometimes helpful if you read the links that Ed attached to his post i.e. The Boston Globe.

JPeterman on November 15, 2012 at 12:53 PM

Correction, that would be the links that Allah included.

Ok here is My take on Petraeus -CIA-Triage. I have No sympathy. He knew the rules, he knew he was breaking them. How many times in his career did he take action against a subordinate for the same action? This goes for General Allen and Ltc Broadwell.
It’s a slander against all the men and woman that serve this country, some giving their lives and played by the rules. Yet these people we want to give a pass solely because they are petty demagogs.
I’ve said it before but keep it in mind. Full Cornel is the highest rank in the Army. General Ranks are Congressional Appointment. Congress gives and Congress can take it away. At any time. Broadwell is an actively participating Ltc in the Army reserves and as such is subject for violations of the UCMJ even if it is outside her position in the Army Reserves.

Again I ask how many careers of people did they end that did the same thing.

Well I can think of a couple of reasons to vote for her.

To paraphrase Julia Roberts in the movie “Erin Brockovich”, they’re called boobs.

She does seem to be following in John Edwards’ footsteps, with the exception of the Senate seat.

Funny, I thought that was a university in Ithaca, NY.

Or did you mean Colonel?
