It looks desperate, but trust me as a CT resident that she’s being more rational than it appears. People here are hopelessly partisan, the kind who vote Obama and Democrat because they buy into all the stereotypes about those other guys. In 2010 CT was one of the few states who flat out rejected the Tea Party movement because they thought they were better than those hicks, now we are all suffering higher taxes because the unions refused to cut back on benefits (big surprise) and the Governor flat out lied about no new taxes when campaigning.

McMahon has spent around $70 million of her own money and has made it surprisingly close; if she has to do this ballot stunt to at least try and avoid losing by 3 or 4 points then I say whatever, good luck, but CT is a lost cause.

That’s funny! I saw a similar misrepresentation this morning. John Barrow was conducting an interview near a busy intersection. His supporters were behind him with signs that said “Re-elect John Barrow” on one side, and “Romney/Ryan 2012″ on the other.

She’s on the ballot in two places. At the top as a Republican and again, at the bottom as an Independent. The sample ballot must be from Independent Linda McMahon.

This is similar to what happened in New York back in the 1990s when Giuliani was running against David Dinkins and Ruth Messinger. There are some people out there who are so knee-jerkly reflexively anti-Republican they think their fingers will burn off if the pull the level for a candidate on the GOP line, even when they don’t want to vote for the other candidate. So putting Rudy, or in this case Linda, on a second ballot line allows those voters to go with the candidate they favor (even if grudgingly), while not despoiling their own feelings of moral purity by toouching a Republican lever.

On the real Connecticut ballots, Linda McMahon is running as both a Republican and as an Independent, while her opponent Chris Murphy is running both as a Democrat and a member of the Workers’ Party.

Lots of blue yard signs for “Linda”, which don’t list her party affiliation. The Chris Murphy signs are red, and do list him as a Democrat. Go figure!

BTW, turnout was extremely heavy in West Hartford this morning. Normally I’m in and out in 5 minutes, but stood in line an hour this morning, even though the polling place had 10 voting booths.

It seems like a stretch to call this a lie too.

There are no claims on the sample ballot that she’ll vote the same way he does or that they are the same party or anything of the sort.

It’s simply putting two facts side by side. Obama’s running with the Democratic party and Linda’s running with the Independent Party. Neither of those things are false.

Bear in mind this might well be a strategic campaign targeted for Democratic areas alone. It looks pretty darn bad on its face, but it might be a shrewd way to peel off a few votes.

Notice the Independent Party line below Linda McMahon’s name.

Like New York where you have Mitt Romney on both the Republican and Conservative lines and Barack Obama on the Democratic and Working Families lines, Connecticut allows candidates like Linda McMahon to be listed as the candidate for the Independent Party and Republican Party.

Low information voters are sought by both campaigns. This is clearly one such tactic to get their vote. The concern is that she may alienate her devoted Republican base who see this as a betrayal. It isn’t. It just is a bit of brand marketing.

It’s tough to win as a Republican in a state as blue as Connecticut, but even Scott Brown isn’t this desperate.

That’s because Massachusetts, unlike Connecticut, doesn’t allow for electoral fusion and separate ticket lines. Brown’s running as a Republican whether he likes it or not. McMahon can run under the Republican and Independence ballot lines.

I guaran-damn-tee you that if he could, Brown would employ this exact same strategy. And if McMahon pulls this out, this will have been validated.

Over in California they went the other way and Democrat congressman trying to link to Romney and Republicans Senate. But for her to win in CT one need to split the vote. Unless Romney can win CT but that is as unlikely as him winning NY
