Should Romney go after Biden on the “one heartbeat away” issue?

posted at 5:12 pm on October 31, 2012 by

Genuinely curious what readers and my GR colleagues have to say about this.  Read Allahpundit’s post on the front page first to go over just list of bizarre statements from the Vice President in just the last few hours.  There is a serious question as to the ability of this man to handle his current job, let alone the job of President should the need arise.  No one who hears Biden’s long string of embarrassments, and his behavior at the debate two weeks ago, without having concerns whether he’s up to the job now, if he ever was.

My question is whether it pays to raise this as an issue at this point.  I’m not sure whether Mitt Romney wants to take the focus off of Barack Obama in the last six days, but maybe Paul Ryan could start pressing the media to discuss Biden’s fitness for office.  Or maybe Biden’s weirdness is so baked into the cake now that it won’t matter to voters.

I just said this in the other thread- run a 30 second ad of “the best of Joe” and then at the end, just the words, “A heartbeat away”. Scares the beejeezus out of me.

BettyRuth on October 31, 2012 at 5:16 PM

no to mitt but ryan could go after him as well as super pacs

cmsinaz on October 31, 2012 at 5:20 PM

You would have to frame the question around something “Set politics and policy aside. Just consider, the ability to think clearly, professionally, and exude confidence.” because you wouldn’t want the message muddled in a sophomoric “War On de Womynsis” distraction.

You want people to really consider the quality of the man who would take charge.

Because should a VP have to take command, something reeeellly bad had to have happened.

kurtzz3 on October 31, 2012 at 5:23 PM

I think Ryan/team could just do ads with joe at the VP debate laughing at everything Ryan said? That should do it to crater joe and add ‘is this who should be president if need be’?

Anything that embarasses the Dems and shows the world what morons they are is worth the effort.

DAT60A3 on October 31, 2012 at 5:32 PM

No. Not with so few days left. Why take the focus off Obama?

lorien1973 on October 31, 2012 at 5:37 PM

no because it implies obama being dead. libs tried that last time with “mccain is old, he could die from heart failure, then sarah palin would be president” it was such a horrible thing to say, completely low and disrespectful.

i can’t believe i’m the first one here who brought that up. isn’t it obvious, the “one heartbeat away” means that obama would be dead? you all really think that’s a good thing for romney to say??

if romney wanted to attack biden then he could attack obama by questioning his judgment in picking such an idiot for vp. not by saying “biden is a heartbeat away.”

Sachiko on October 31, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Absolutely! The guy is mentally retarded an is one heartbeat from having his hand on the “lauch” or “reset” or whatever button. Scares the crap out of me anyway!

KMC1 on October 31, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Super PAC only. Romney/Ryan should stick to jobs and the economy. Picking on Biden is small (but valid) ball — like contraceptives.

Should Romney go after Biden on the “one heartbeat away” issue?

Totally unnecessary!!

Biden is doing a fine job of exposing Biden: just get out of his way.

landlines on October 31, 2012 at 6:13 PM

No, especially after Biden indicated that he is running in 2016. If that doesn’t scare them, nothing will.

One does not have to imply that the President has passed away. With all of his actions, Obama could easily be impeached and removed from office. That would leave Biden standing there to take the office of POTUS.

DAT60A3 on October 31, 2012 at 6:16 PM

How would Biden be worse than Obama? How could he be?

boko fittleworth on October 31, 2012 at 6:43 PM

What would Biden say if he got the 3 AM call?

kemojr on October 31, 2012 at 6:54 PM

No. Not with so few days left. Why take the focus off Obama?

lorien1973 on October 31, 2012 at 5:37 PM

Agreed…kind of. It should be a standard part of both Ryan and Romney’s stump speeches to ridicule the inexperience and know-nothingness of Obama and the stupidity and mental illness of Biden.

Of course.

But with millions of votes already cast and days left before the Big Day, there is no time and no point in making a special effort to point out how mentally handicapped Joe Biden is. Just keep laughing at him and remind voters that Obama needed Biden to provide “gravitas” to the ticket.

Jar Jar Biden.

TXUS on October 31, 2012 at 7:21 PM

No. Let Obama grasp at straws, you’re ahead, you act like you’re ahead.

Red Cloud on October 31, 2012 at 7:37 PM

Nah. Waste of time and effort. Who besides hardcore liberals don’t know he’s an extrodinary idiot? Even his own party won’t trust him to be President on two occasions.

Biden is proof that people don’t vote for the bottom half of the ticket.

Hog Wild on October 31, 2012 at 8:22 PM

No!!!

There’s only a week left — let’s keep it about Romney’s competence and Obama’s failures.

Remember Romney needs support from people who voted for Obama last time.

Saying, in effect, “What were you thinking putting this guy a heartbeat away?” is not a winning message — it puts them on the defensive. Do that, and “undecideds” will split 50-50, instead of breaking for Romney.

We’re winning — on Jobs and the Economy and Romney’s competence. That’s the message. It’s simple. It’s true. And Obama has *no* response to it. (Unless you think the new job numbers will save him, somehow.)

ClintACK on October 31, 2012 at 8:55 PM

Yes. I would consider it a public service announcement. Hey look the guy you have for a VP is a real live moron. oops. Better fix that.

magicbeans on October 31, 2012 at 8:56 PM

Sachiko on October 31, 2012 at 5:49 PM

Are you saying no one should talk about the possibility of Biden stepping in as president, commander in chief, and the country’s lead representative to foreign countries, because it’s just too darn impolite?

No one is immortal. Obama could slip on a banana peel or have some other freak accident. There are ample examples of situations where the VP did indeed become the president, and the fitness of anyone who would run the country is not just fair game, it’s irresponsible not to consider it.

Mayday on October 31, 2012 at 9:16 PM

In answer to that question—yes! Because it’s the truth and it needs to be pointed out. VP Biden is looney and he IS only a heartbeat away from the Presidency. And that is one scary thought. Probably even for Democrats.
