Reckless Speculation: The Sex Scandal (UPDATE: Bob Menendez?)

posted at 10:22 pm on October 31, 2012 by

As AP notes on the blog, we’re in watch and wait mode, with some very sordid details emerging over at Ace.  Anyone care to place comments section bets on which US Senator is about to have a bad day?

UPDATE – I’m now hearing from several sources that the Senator in question is likely New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez.  If this information pans out (there are apparently documents and possibly even a video involved), I’ll offer further commentary.  In the meantime, I’ll simply say that based on unconfirmed reports, this is not a run-of-the-mill sex scandal by any means.

UPDATE II – Getting waaaay ahead of ourselves here (the thread is called “reckless speculation” after all), but under NJ law, the governor would appoint a new US Senator in the event of a vacancy.

What is a “run of the mill” sex scandal? I must lead a boring life I guess.

Oblivious to the Federal law that says committing a crime in another country is the same as committing the crime in the United States, are we?

Or has New Jersey legalized prostitution and/or solicitation?

If one of the women was under the legal age of consent, it automatically becomes a sex crime, a felony and a requirement to be tracked as a registered sex offender.

Or do YOU think it is ok for adult males to have sex with a female under the legal age of consent?

The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men.

Pretty boring sex scandal. If he were a Republican it would be all over but this will be on par with Don Trump’s Obama records stunt.

I didn’t see anything about them being underage.

sharrukin on November 1, 2012 at 2:37 AM

Speculation is that it involves underage hookers. That might be enough to do it. Age of consent in Dominican Republic is 18. He might be in some hot water with the authorities there if that is true.

Doesn’t matter what the age of consent is there–or here for that matter. Paying for sex with a person under 18 outside the United States is its own special US felony, carrying a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, irrespective of age-of-consent laws.

Fabozz on November 1, 2012 at 2:38 AM

It’s probably not going to be enough to cost Melendez the election, but it could end up being enough to force him to resign later, if the underage allegation is true (given the Toreceilli precedent in New Jesery and Charlie Rangel’s ability to ride out his own Caribbean scandal across the river in New York, Melendez might actually try to tough this one out all e way through 2013, in hopes Christie would lose next November and the new Democrat in Tremton could work out a ‘graceful’ exit that wouldn’t end with a Republican appointed to the seat).

jon1979 on November 1, 2012 at 3:22 AM

This is only a story when it is a Republican.
You must understand…Republicans claim to have morals and values… so they must be held to that level.
The democrats have no morals nor values… therefore they don’t have to live up to anyone’s expectations !

THAT IS HOW DEMOCRATS THINK !

Menendez just earned democrat “street cred.” His popularity just shot up by 50% with Dems.

Raquel Pinkbullet on November 1, 2012 at 3:29 AM

Menendez down to 50% on Intrade. An hour or so ago it was at 76%. Someone said it was in the 90s before this story.

Man, he should be losing his “street cred” when he stiffs the hookers. All the dems talk about “equal pay” and protection for women, defenders of the downtroden, Menendez gets free air travel to the Dominican Republic and he’s too cheap to pay women the agreed upon amount for his entertainment? He probably would be comfortable paying $500 for dinner and wine, but not Dominican Republic hookers.

Typical dem, cheap with his own money in paying someone else for services rendered.
