2012 Major League Baseball Playoffs (Sunday) ~ Open Thread

posted at 11:57 am on October 7, 2012 by

The playoffs are in full swing today when all eight remaining teams hit the diamonds.  In the first game of the day, Oakland A’s will try to even up their series with the Detroit Tigers at 9:07 AM PACIFIC TIME, (12:07 ET)  Detroit leads series 1-0 after Justin Verlander allowed only three hits over seven innings with 11K’s in a 3-1 victory.  The A’s will send Tommy Milone to the mound, (13-10, 3.74 ERA), while the Tigers will counter with Doug Fister, (10-10, 3.45 ERA).

At 12:07 PM PACIFIC, (3:07 ET), the Washington Nationals begin their series against the wild-card St. Louis Cardinals.  The Nationals will start Gio Gonzalez, (21-8, 2.89 ERA), against the Cards’ Adam Wainwright, (14-13, 3.94 ERA).

At 3:07 PACIFIC, (6:07 ET), the New York Yankees begin their best-of-five series with the Baltimore Orioles.  NY will send CC Sabathia, (15-6, 3.38 ERA) to the mound against the Orioles’ Jason Hammel, (8-6, 3.43 ERA).

In the final game of the day, 6:37 PACIFIC, (9:37 ET), the San Francisco Giants will try to even up their series against the Cincinnati Reds.  The Reds took the first game last night 5-2 to lead the series 1-0.  The Reds lost starter Johnny Cueto to a back injury in the first inning, but Sam LeCure, Mat Latos, and three other pitchers kept the Giants in check giving up only 2 runs, one a bases empty home run from Buster Posey.  The Reds offense got to SF starter Matt Cain when Brandon Phillips hit a two-run homer in the third, and Jay Bruce hit a blast to the deepest part of AT&T Park, (436 feet), silencing 43,492 Giants’ fans for most of the evening.  Tonight, the Giants will start Madison Bumgarner, (16-11, 3.37 ERA) against Cincy’s Bronson Arroyo, (12-10, 3.74 ERA).

You could easily say it was not a good day for Bay Area fans yesterday.  Let’s hope the A’s and Giants can even things up and the 49ers can prevail over the Buffalo Bills, while the struggling Oakland Raiders, (1-3), get the week off.

The Cincinnati Reds haven’t lost a three game series at home all year. With my G-men down 0-2 and heading to Ohio, the outlook is grim. I really thought the Giants would at least get a split playing at home—-tipping my hat to the new 2012 “Big Red Machine”—-color me impressed.
