Chicago Strike Over, Spinning Begins

posted at 6:59 pm on September 18, 2012 by

The Chicago Teachers Union House of Delegates voted to send teachers back to work while a ratification vote is conducted.

Follow this link to view the 23-page summary of new contract language.

And the union provides this answer to a Frequently Asked Question:

Will we be paid this Friday?

You will be paid as usual this Friday. Your next check will be short for the days we have been out on strike.

It’s more like, Chicago teachers strike over, back to business as usual.

But will they still have to weigh in at the pound?

Why do negotiations always have to go this far. Can people really not get things done sooner. I’ve never had to do this. I’m not just talking about Unions.

I just read through CTU’s summary of the contract, and it sounds like the teachers lost pretty badly–even worse than the contract they had before. Here’s an off-the-top-of-my-head quick summary of the big points:

— Raises of 3%, 2%, 2% for the next three years
— Class sizes to stay the same (or perhaps slightly shrink)
— Funding to add 600 new art/music/PE/etc teachers
— Teacher evaluations still based somewhat on testing, but at the minimum level
— Unused sick days don’t accumulate for cashing out at retirement

Considering the teachers walked away from 16% raises over the next 4 years, this seems significant.

Read about the guy who is the head of the CTU, he came from CA., where he ran this strike just like that one, and came out on the short end of the stick (just like in CA.).

People are so predictable.

So now unions go on strike to get LESS???

Smart Power that…

Who was it on HotAir (or was it NR?) that predicted they would stop their strike before the two weeks were up? Because their union benefits run out after two weeks.
