MSNBC’s Schultz and Sharpton Falsely Claim Janesville Plant Closed Under President Bush to Slam Ryan

During MSNBC’s August 29 GOP Convention coverage, Ed Schultz and Al Sharpton made patently false remarks during their post-speech commentary of Rep. Paul Ryan. Congressman Ryan was slammed concerning statements he made about the closure of the Janesville General Motors plant.  Rep. Ryan reiterated that President Barack Obama promised to keep the plant open, but then shut it down.  The left-wingers went rabid and supported  the false narrative that the plant was closed by George W. Bush.

Sharpton said if you want “an eloquent person [Ryan] that does not tell the truth, this was a great performance.”

Ed Schultz exclaimed that the people in is hometown must know that he’s lying about the plant.

The irony is palpable. In actuality, the plant closed in June of 2009.  The Janesville Gazette reported back in February of 2009 that:

General Motors will end medium-duty truck production in Janesville on April 23 [2009], four months to the day after the plant stopped building full-size sport utility vehicles.

About 100 employees associated with the line learned of the layoffs Wednesday.

April will mark the end of vehicle production at the Janesville plant that traces its roots to 1919 and the Samson Model M tractor. Chevrolet production started in Janesville in 1923.

The Isuzu line and its employees build about 25 trucks four days a week. The cab-forward truck is commonly used as a delivery vehicle.

GM and Isuzu strengthened their partnership in 1994 with the launch of the NPR gas-powered trucks in Janesville. Two years later, GM and Isuzu started a separate project that put Isuzu-designed cabs on GM’s medium-duty chassis. That line eventually moved from Janesville to Flint, Mich.

So, it appears that Mr. Schultz and Mr. Sharpton are, unsurprisingly, wrong. It was closed under the Obama administration.

I love Fat Ed thinks he some how speaks for blue collar workers in a the few times I’ve paid mild attention to anything he says. Completely lost on him is how burdensome taxes and regulations pushed by Dems hurt the creation and retention of these jobs.

The best part was Scott Walker refusing to back down. I thought Ed Schultz was going to explode. And Maddow was beside herself that Walker would not concede her opinion that the auto bailouts were a huge success, despite the fact that GM is on the edge of bankruptcy and still owed the government billions of dollars.

Joe Trippi also made this claim on F&F this morning.

Oh, for f**k’s sake. That plant had been rumored to have been closing down since well into the 90s. It was almost a running gag in Rock County.

MadisonConservative on August 30, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Before we jump all over the liberal media, there’s some truth to what they’re saying. The announcement of the plant’s closing came in June 2008. The plant stopped producing SUVs in December of 2008. It was fully closed in May 2009.

So you can’t really blame Obama for the plant closing, true. You *can*, however, blame Obama for making a promise he couldn’t keep. If he *had* kept that promise, we’d all be jumping on his back for forcing GM to make an uneconomic business decision.

It’s a plant that makes SUVs and trucks. Democrats did everything they could to close it. Who cares when it closed? It closed because of gas taxes, CAFE standards, threats of carbon taxes. In 2008, it was pretty clear which way the wind was blowing and who was blowing it.

Now all of a sudden Dems are crying over closed SUV plants? This is precisely what they wanted!

What you can blame on Obama is that all these shuttered plants are still sitting there, without new development. His bankruptcy receivers have done nothing to unload these properties, dragging the process on and on in order to keep collecting their outrageous fees. The “new GM” properties that have been shuttered is because their value is far below the asking price and cost a small fortune to maintain, yet are held onto to prop up the GM bottom line.

King Obama is also fundraiser off of the lie.

Drew –

If you’ve seen any coverage of Paul Ryan’s speech in Tampa, you know that the consensus among journalists and independent observers is that it was … factually challenged.

He lied about Medicare. He lied about the Recovery Act. He lied about the deficit and debt. He even dishonestly attacked Barack Obama for the closing of a GM plant in his hometown of Janesville, Wisconsin — a plant that closed in December 2008 under George W. Bush. He also failed to offer one constructive idea about what he would do to move the country forward.

Don’t roll your eyes. We can’t just groan and shrug and remark to our like-minded friends that this is ridiculous, because this is a significant moment in this campaign.

The fact that this speech, on this huge stage, is this blatantly false represents a huge bet by the Romney campaign — they’ve decided that facts, truth and reality will not be a brake on their campaign message. And they just signaled to the extremist billionaires and corporate interests that support them that they should go ahead and spend their hundreds of millions of dollars attacking Barack Obama with whatever lies can work.

More soon.
