Mia Love, rising star, delivers rousing speech at RNC

It’s déjà-vu all over again, or at least shades of 2004. A black speaker that Joe Biden might describe as “articulate and bright and clean and nice-looking,” delivers a rousing convention speech. This speaker, moreover, is female. And if that’s not enough to merit a column, she’s also a Mormon.

Meet Mia Love, mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, and GOP candidate for U.S. Congress. (As an aside, if she wins, Fox News reports, she would become the first black GOP congresswoman.)

In her Tuesday speech, which can be viewed here, she struck a familiar chord by laying out her personal vision of the American dream. Love, who is a first-generation Haitian-American, said:

Let me tell you about the America I know. My parents immigrated to this country with $10 in their pockets and the hope that the America they heard about really did exist.

The America I now is grounded in the determination found in patriots and pioneers. It’s found in the Olympic athletes and every child who looks at the impossible and says, ‘I can do that.’ That’s the America I know.

She spoke of the importance of self-reliance and acknowledged a debt of gratitude to her parents for instilling in her at an early age a sense of personal responsibility.

She also lambasted President Obama whose polices, she said, “have failed us. We’re not better off than we were four years ago. And no rhetoric, bumper sticker or Hollywood campaign ad can change that.”

Democrats need not have a reaction to Love’s speech because she is just starting out and could fizzle. Nevertheless it would be surprising if liberal spin doctors didn’t dissect her every word—if they didn’t dig through some dusty archive to gather proof that her parents had $11, not ten, in their pockets when they first set foot on American soil.

Besides, they will argue, Mia Love isn’t really black, the message being that real blacks don’t sell out to the party of slavery and the KKK (which, according to the gospel of Democrat revisionist history, is the GOP). She will not be accorded the status of woman either, again because of her politics, although one can easily imagine unfunny man Tracy Morgan sizing her up as “good masturbation material.”

Her Mormonism is another story, That Democrats will be happy to seize on because it’s a goofy sect, one whose adherents wear “magic underwear.” Just ask the ever-tolerant New York Times columnist Charles Blow, who took a shot at Mitt Romney’s Mormonism back in February. If you didn’t hear about it, that’s because it didn’t get any play in the mainstream media. And if they have their way, you won’t hear about Mia Love either.
