‘The Obama Effect’: Just when you thought it was safe to root for hope and change

“New pro-Obama movie breaks the needle off the unintentionally hilarious meter.” That is Weasel Zippers’ one-sentence critique of a newly released film titled The Obama Effect (it hits theaters today), and it is frankly an assessment that it is hard to top. But here goes an effort.

First a plot summary, courtesy of Newsbusters’ Matt Vespa:

[T]he movie, set in 2008, is the fictional account of a man named John (played by Charles S. Dutton) who suffers a heart attack and discovers he’s spared death because he has a mission from God: campaigning for Barack Obama….

Upon seeing Obama delivering his sweet promises of an American Candyland, John quits his white collar job and builds a shrine to the Obamamessiah in his house to the point where the inimitable Senator for Illinois has become the wall paper. He pimps out his van with all the Obama slogans and tries to convince his undecided Hispanic neighbor to vote for Obama because he’s an awesome guy. He pesters local hair salon patrons, urging the ladies to be on the right side of history (whatever that means) and finally, as The Blaze noted, finds meaning in his life.

OK, take a few minutes to compose yourself.

It is possible, as Vespa writes, that “the trailer [which can be viewed here] was edited a bit deceptively and the plot is a little more complex and twisted than it suggests.” But is highly doubtful that Dutton, who is also credited as writer and director, assembled a nearly all-black cast to send up the nation’s first black president on the eve of what could turn out to be massive repudiation of everything Obama stands for. It is admittedly curious that second star billing goes to Katt Williams, who is a comedian, but there is no hint anywhere at the film’s website that it is intended as satire.

Which raises the question: Then what is it? Is it supposed to be an alternative reality flick that lacks both alternative and reality? Is it a rallying clarion to black voters to get out there and vote again on Nov. 6 even though the black unemployment rate remains fixed at 14.2%? If the film is meant to remind liberals of what they so fervently hoped for in 2008, all they have to do is turn on the TV for a sobering reminder of the disappointment their votes bought them (and us).

Is this for real? Seriously? Are they importing North Korean propagandists?

Unless it becomes possible to buy movie tickets with food stamps (and the movie is subtitled in Spanish), this isn’t likely to be a box office success.

I don’t think we can blame God for this.

At the end of the day, if you clear away all the conjecture, speculation and analysis its all about racism — vote for Barack Obama because he’s black.

There is nothing deeper in any of what’s going on, any of Obama’s speeches, any of Obama’s supporters statements, any of the media’s pronouncements: You have to vote for Obama because he’s black.

End of story.

Huh. Anyone else notice that you never see Charles S. Dutton and Muhammad Saeed al-Sahhaf [aka "Baghdad Bob"] in the same place at the same time?

Just sayin’…
