‘Buxom bandit,’ who wore low-cut top during robberies, surrenders

posted at 12:53 pm on July 13, 2012 by

In the 1970s, an enterprising bank robber in Pittsburgh managed to elude police for months by appearing “ordinary”—dressing in a business suit and visiting downtown branches during lunch hour. His capacity to blend so seamlessly into the crowd earned him the nickname “commuter bandit.”

For the longest time, that crafty thief occupied a top spot in this writer’s pantheon of clever criminals. He has been supplanted by a crook with a more ingenuous M.O., a 22-year-old Australian woman who up until several days ago was known only as the “buxom bandit.”

Her disguise, like the commuter’s, was no disguise at all. Like his face, hers was unmasked and unaltered, exposed to any robbery victim who cared to give police a description. Only her victims’ eyes were not on her face but, rather, her most salient attribute: her large breasts, which she called attention to by wearing low-cut tops.

After remaining on the lam for less than a week following her alleged heist of a gas station convenience store, Tonee Walker turned herself in to Queensland police. A video of the robbery captured on a store surveillance camerahas meanwhile became an internet sensation, so far garnering close to 300,000 page views. The crime has also been immortalized in a Tawainese animated recreation that fancifully depicts Walker bounding into the gas station on the back of a kangaroo, even though later in the dramatization her accomplice is shown waiting next to a getaway vehicle. (If it is possible, the animation gets weirder still, showing the kangaroo picking Walker out from a lineup of buxom scantily clad women.)

The website news.com.au reports that Walker has been charged with armed robbery. Her accomplice, Alexander Joshua Spinks, has also been charged.

According to court documents, Walker entered a Gold Coast gas station on June 30 armed with a knife. She left with about $300 in cash, later telling friends that she had given the station attendant “something to look at” while threatening him with the knife.

Walker was denied bail after police testified at her arraignment that she had exhibited “erratic and violent” behavior and was already on probation for criminal drug offenses. She is scheduled to appear back in court on August 20.

I’ve always been meaning to ask: why don’t Green Room posts have pictures like the other sections..?

Ah, but there are! Check the article again. I have included links to both a slideshow (of predominantly the hilarious Taiwanese dramatization) and a link to the video, which, for your convenience, I have repasted here: http://www.examiner.com/video/the-buxom-bandit-strikes

I saw the links (misfortune: work proxies screen out any streams – gotta wait til I get home) — I meant on the front page, to go with the link to the post proper…

Australia’s ‘Buxom Bandit’ Busted

Sources say the suspect was arrested on the basis of “two major tips” received by Australian police after they circulated this wanted poster:

(Hat-tip: Howard Portnoy at Hot Air Green Room.) Next time your wife accuses you of staring at another woman’s breasts, just explain to her that you’re conducting surveillance. It’s important for alert citizens to keep an eye out for dangerous criminals like this.

RS McCain for the home run.

Way ahead of you, my friend, but thanks for the … er–tip.

Just realized you were quoting Stacey, who’s an alum of the GR.

Robbery, hell! Howard P., as the clerk, would have willingly given her the cash if only she dropped top . . .
