Middle school students suspended for watching porn, masturbating, in class

posted at 12:47 pm on June 19, 2012 by

This is clearly not the way modern electronic technology was meant to be deployed in the classroom. NBC San Diego reports that nine male students were suspended from Bell Middle School for allegedly masturbating while watching pornography on their cell phones during English class.

The suspension occurred in May, but the district has remained close-mouthed about the incident, stating only that officials are “prohibited from commenting on confidential student or personnel matters.” The efforts at stonewalling extend to the teacher, Ed Johnson, who was reportedly told about the behavior as it was happening but refused to take action.

Johnson has refused repeated requests for an interview, but the district sent an email to NBC San Diego that reads:

With respect to Mr. Johnson, all we can tell you is that he is employed by the District and remains assigned to Bell Middle School as of Friday. His schedule has not changed.

One of Johnson’s students from another class was permitted by her family to appear on camera provided her face was pixilated to conceal her identity. She told reporters:

It’s crazy … I don’t even know … I can’t even believe it.

He’s my teacher but I’m in a different period, and he doesn’t really do much about anything because he’s not a good teacher. He always reads. That’s all we do in class is read. You read with him. No, he reads and we listen.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the teachers union has Johnson’s back. NBC notes that a union representative has expressed skepticism at the reports of what went down, dismissing the source of the accusations as “students in the classroom.” The news website U-T San Diego has a response from the school’s vice principal, Kathleen Gallagher:

As the administrator who initially investigated this incident, I would like to say for the record that I never suspend students unless the information is accurately verified. The statements submitted by students should not be discounted based on their age. The process of collecting statements and interviewing students was conducted consistent with district procedures, each one independently of every other one….

The union meanwhile has organized a petition drive on Johnson’s part.

Now, if they were masterbating to gay porn, this would be a civil rights issue and the teachers and administrators would be on administrative leave.

Apparently these young lads have learned something at public school, perhaps we should take what we can get.
