It’s what’s for dinner—if you are de facto WH food czar

posted at 1:35 pm on February 27, 2012 by

What would you rather eat: A steak or a chef’s salad? Plain corn or creamed spinach? Raw baby carrots or crab mac and cheese? A banana or pear tart à la mode? Skim chocolate milk or white wine?

Clearly there are people who would opt for the first (read: healthful) item in each pair. Equally clearly, one of those people is not First Lady Michelle Obama.

Keith Koffler of White House Dossier reports:

The White House Sunday epically failed to practice what its first lady preaches, serving the nation’s governors a more than 2,000 calorie dinner even as Michelle Obama traverses the country promoting health eating.

While Michelle lectures children to cut out the fat and eat their vegetables unadorned with caloric sauces, she served the governors—who are in Washington for their annual meeting—a feast that included lard-marbled steak, vegetables slathered with dairy enhancements, and dessert.

The White House has proposed mandating meals for elementary school kids that include none of these items, or anything like them.

Koffler goes on to list the Wednesday lunch menu proposed on the White House website, then lists the menu fed to the governors, which provided 2,000 calories—a full day’s worth for women and 500 short of the same benchmark for men.

It is one thing for the first lady to attempt to control what American schoolchildren are fed at lunchtime. It is another for her to claim she is using the rule of law to clamp down on lifestyle-related health problems, then look the other way when the White House chefs lay on the fat and calories.

I am amazed at the daily smack in your face our Gov/White House gives us .. is it Nov yet / No it isn’t..

It is one thing for the first lady to attempt to control what American schoolchildren are fed at lunchtime.

oh howard, where to begin?

the first lady does not make policy, and has nothing to do with the story you linked. it’s poor form to attach a link to a text that has no connection to the linked material.

second, the story you linked is bogus, but it sounds too good to check, right? so just keep referring to it and pretend that it’s true. or you could just correct your blog post, but you’re a right winger so you don’t have to abide by these basic rules of blogging.

When asked to clarify why she preaches one diet, while eating quite another, Ms. Obama was quick to reply, “Do as I say, not as I moo”.

realitycheck on February 27, 2012 at 2:38 PM

When asked about this discrepancy between what Michelle urges/recommends/demands from all of us regarding healthy eating and what the White House kitchen has been cooking up for well over three years now, the First Lady responded, “Ummmph, smack, slurp, crunch, crunch, more gravy, urpp, that’s some mighty fine Wagyu, more fries, please, crunch, slurp, where’s my gravy? Urrrrp.”

Just to make it clear, the bogus link refers to the “School refuses to allow preschooler to eat ‘non-nutritious’ lunch from home” story (not the Koffler article, which was my first impression) and refutes most of the charges that were being tossed around in the salad bowl of public opinion, so it’s actually worth a read.

However, Mrs. Obama may not make policy, but she is making lots of speeches about healthy eating*, and it would be nice if the WH kitchen had to listen to them too.

Maybe Queen Elizabeth has some extra copies

*Caution: HuffPo link, so you know it’s not just Right-Wing Bias.

unless she’s able to deploy mind control, making speeches about healthy nutrition is not an “attempt to control what American schoolchildren are fed at lunchtime.” it is, in fact, a completely unobjectionable thing for the first lady to do, unless it’s michelle obama, whom conservatives hate for being michelle obama, and everything she does is therefore objectionable.

this may be new to you, but she never said that you must always eat low-calorie foods. i know it’s difficult to process for the pea-sized brains that make up much of the HA community, but serving a 2000 calorie dinner to adults doesn’t at all conflict with her campaign against childhood obesity.

the “conservative” obsession with michelle obama, and the fact that she seems to be more hated, despite having no policy making power and thus very little influence on our lives, than her husband, tells a lot about the “conservative” mindset. it’s racism, pure and simple, and people like howard and koffler traffic in feeding this irrational hatred.

i know you’re upset at being called racist; i don’t often do that but in this case it’s obvious. shame on all of you.

I’m just a “SIMPLE MINDED” conservative so please tell me WHERE on here you saw the “racism”

All I saw in the comments was Michelle Obama’s double standard called out…Why do people like you have to invoke the race card with every breath…gheez

Wow, for a guy with a sufficiently witty name you are REALLY quick to throw around the race card…me thinks you are projecting. Just because you are a racist a$$ does not mean we are…conservatives just hate double standards. And this is a BIG double standard the White House is showing. M.O. is the face of the WH campaign for REQUIREMENTS in elementary lunches, so she should get the brunt of this…just as if the WH was to obfuscate on details about illegal arms sales to, lets say, Mexican cartels, we might make fun of Holder as the spokesperson for rule of law in the administration.

after 3 years of non-stop hatred of michelle obama on the right, from outright racism to criticizing her looks, it’s clear for all to see what’s going on.

the juvenile “i know you are but what am i” retort is of course laughable. in the conservative psyche, only liberals can be racist, but i understand the motivation to deflect.

You might feel more at home on HuffPo or someplace where you can find a whole community of those who invoke racism when you can’t really provide a well supported argument. Don’t go away mad, Troll, just go away.

you don’t even have an argument, prof. halfwit.

generalize about me or huffpo commenters all you want, i’m here to tell you that there’s cottage industry on the right that profits from an extreme irrational hatred of fl obama. the ostensible reason for this hatred is one act of making a poorly worded statement regarding her pride for her country. that’s it. the rest is nonsense about her trying to control your lives by promoting healthy eating and lifestyle habits for kids. which she has neither the means nor any apparent inclination to do. the real reason is that many refuse to accept that a black woman as flotus.

i just don’t understand why civilized, self-respecting people are willing to promote this. counting the fcking calories in her meals, it’s unbelievable. kind of revolting, too.

Ah yes…the fallback argument for progtards of all ages.

Give it a rest, sessy. Nobody really gives a sh*t what you find revolting.

My Sharia Moor on February 28, 2012 at 7:29 AM

Dear Sesq,

As I recall, folks around here are pretty harsh towards Mrs. Clinton when she was FLOTUS. And I have read some pretty nasty stuff liberals such as Mark Morford and Ted Rall have written about Mrs. Bush (both) and Mrs. Cheney. Oddly, those comments were not considered racist.

Didn’t congress vote to fund MO’s healthy initiative for kids? Money from the federal govt was set aside to promote her program. Not to mention all the travel/speeches she’s given promoting it. That travel was/is funded by US Taxpayers. Also, she’s not just changing meals for kids – she has now attacked the military food.

What I find revolting is that Obama supporters resort to calling everyone else a racist. I do not care what color a person is. She could be purple with green polka dots for all I care. The problem is policy, not skin color. If she’s going to tell me how to eat and how to feed my family, then she better be setting the best example possible. In this case, she’s not.

May I suggest that you collect all your comments into a single document. Then read them objectively. With the utilization of only minimal intellectual skills you should conclude they are as accurate as claiming the the sun rises in the west.

Your basis for creative vicitmology is that anyone with enhanced melanin manifestation(s) is beyond reproach and can not be criticized.

Before sesquipedalin has a coronary I realize I should have typed “as accurate as claiming that the sun rises in the west.”
