Bloomberg uses ‘photoshopped amputation’ to deliver diabetes message

“The medium is the message.” Marshall McLuhan coined that oft-quoted observation nearly half a century ago, but he could have been talking about a poster now appearing in New York City subways courtesy of the Bloomberg administration.

The ad, part of the mayor’s campaign to scare residents into cutting down on sugar-laden foods, shows an overweight man seated on a stool behind three progressively larger cups of soda. The man is missing his right leg below the knee, and a pair of crutches is propped against the wall behind him. The accompanying text explains the connection:

Portions have grown. So has type 2 diabetes, which can lead to amputations.

Cut your portions. Cut your risk.

Nice of the mayor to care so much. His nurturing side has surfaced before, first in his efforts to forcibly wrest the salt shaker from the hands of New Yorkers and again in his installation of curbside bike lanes, which has increased traffic congestion manyfold.

Unlike his previous health-oriented endeavors, which were grotesquely hands-on, this latest wag of the finger is purely instructional—there to “tell it like it is.” Sort of. It turns out that the man in the picture isn’t really an amputee but a model who sat for the photo years earlier. You can see this for yourself by comparing the finished poster with the unretouched photo.

By way of justifying the use of a doctored photo, New York Health Department spokesman John Kelly told the New York Times:

Sometimes we use individuals who are suffering from the particular disease; other times we have to use actors. We might stop using actors in our ads if the food industry stops using actors in theirs.

In other words, one bad turn deserves another.

The Times article also quotes Bob Garfield, a commentator for Advertising Age and National Public Radio, who said, “Why people lie when there’s no penalty for telling the truth is an absolute mystery to me.”

As someone who suffers from Type II diabetes, I can say that, in my personal experience, it isn’t so much WHAT you eat, or how MUCH you eat, but the amount of exercise that accompanies those meals.

If you aren’t adding exercise, even simple walking, to your regimen, then it doesn’t matter much how well you diet or what meds you take. It will get harder and harder to maintain blood glucose levels at something approaching normal.

anybody check out how “real” the FDA proposed cigarette label pictures are? I’ll give a hint…the truth is closely related to this story…

Right on. Nanny Bloomberg’s ad is oversimplifying the problem. Pills cannot overcome our stationary lifestyles.

Not to mention the effects of other drugs that people are taking. For example; doctors prescribe a lot of cholesterol-reducing drugs without blinking an eye. There are now studies out now showing a 48% increase in diabetes cases among statin users. Not a good statistic.

Gee, lying images from the government. False impressions constantly retailed by the media. You’d think this was the Soviet Union, any time between 1917 and 1991.

Photoshopping Bloomberg’s head out of his next press conference would be a better use of the “amputation” technique.

ok…killed smoking, killed transfats, killed salt, tried to kill sugar anything, doesn’t like guns, apparently hates automobiles…

las vegas needs to open up odds on what is next (I have a few ideas but they would all be non-PC)…

I see a pattern emerging. ;-)

nice try there Howard…I’ve been accused of many things in my professional life but “stupid” was never on the list (and I’ll add that sexHarr never made it either)! I’ll leave it to others to fill in the blanks…

well Howard…I pride myself on not seeing race, religion, gender (or whatever other check-boxes are available) when I assess people…me being rather simple minded, I classify people as either close-minded or open to rational debate. It’s a pretty easy system for somebody with my rather limited IQ…maybe I should apply for a patent and I would be a millionaire???

btw…I did just watch walker’s Wisconsin SOTS address…wish they had the ability to taze the hecklers in the balcony and have tv camera’s on them…also wish we could find out names/profiles of them to see if they even live here.
