Mitt or Newt? Pick your poison.

It’s a niche sub-genre of political slapfight:

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday morning he would “consider” returning the money he earned as a consultant to mortgage giant Freddie Mac if Republican rival Mitt Romney returned his earnings from “bankrupting companies and laying off employees.”

Gingrich was responding to Romney’s call, on Fox and Friends earlier Monday, for Gingrich to return his Freddie Mac earnings, for which he has come under attack.

…and Newt tacked on the obligatory ironic denouncement of Mitt’s negativity for good measure. Two points about the exchange leap to mind.

First, Newt seems perfectly willing to attack from the left when challenged. I have no sympathy on that score for Mitt Romney, who attacked Rick Perry from the left on entitlements. However, Newt’s convenient disdain for the creative destruction necessary to a healthy market system ought to give more pause to those treating Gingrich as the True Conservative alternative to Romney. Indeed, the attack only underscores that Gingrich sees nothing fundamentally wrong with having taken money to promote (or “not lobby” for) Freddie Mac as it — and other government distortions of the housing market — were about to be revealed as the bubble collapsed.

Second, it’s a fair bet Team Obama will roll out either of those attacks if either Mitt or Newt is the nominee. If it’s Mitt, we’ll hear a lot about Mitt being a one-percenter who got rich firing the proletartiat — and healthcare reform will be largely off the table. If it’s Newt, we’ll hear a lot about the unpleasant, longtime Beltway insider and not-lobbyist — and the government’s role in precipitating our current economic malaise will be largely off the table. The phrase “pick your poison” comes to mind.

I understand Gingrich is intelligent.

But that right there is intelligent Gingrich
being Irrational Gingrich.

Sounds…desperate.

And not only is that Gingrich sounding irrational, but, is he actually saying that, by association,
Romney “bankrupting companies and laying off
employees” is equivalent or similar to
Gingrich taking money from Freddie/Fannie?

‘Cause, that’s what he’s saying there by
forming such an association.

Since I’m a Romney troll i may as well get my 2 cents in.
at least Romneys money did not come out of taxpayer money

Neither Newt nor Mitt can claim the high ground of conservatism. Neither of them are my first choice to be the nominee but I think picking poison may be a little strong. Probably more important than choosing between either of them is the battle to regain control of the Senate and hold the House. A conservative Senate and House will throttle either of these two into becoming a “good” President. My hunch is that Romney may be a better fit in that scenario but I plan to vote for the Republican nominee no matter what.

I don’t think Newt truly misunderstands the “creative destruction” aspect of running a business, especially one like Bain Capital. I just think he’s hitting Romney where Romney has tried to hit him.

If Romney can claim that Newt made money in a way counter to some principle, then so can Newt say that to Romney. I guess the difference would be that Newt’s attack is from the left whereas Romney’s could be from the left or right (as both sides have it in for Fannie/Freddie).

The objective is to get Obama out and any Republican in. So long as these guys violate Reagan’s commandment against disparaging other Republicans, we can assume they’re more interested in their own career than the good of the country. Isn’t that why people hate politicians? In any case, whoever the nominee is, that person needs to do what McCain refused to do, which is go after Obama’s history (or lack thereof) and his associations, lies, ideology and so forth. Next to Obama, any Republican will look like a decent American.

I was not a Reagan fan but voted for him. I became a big fan AFTER he became president and set in motion the actions we laud him for now – AFTER his two terms.

If the final GOP stanardbearer is either Gingrich or Romney I will support, campaign for, and vote for him. No, NOT because they are the “not-Obama” candidate, although that is tempting. No, I will vote for him hoping that he will establish an Executive Branch of our government that will put us on course for smaller government, let the business sector do what it does best (within reason), and bring us back from the brink of ruin.

If conservatives say that we are voting for the GOP holding our noses, and some are already saying that, then in reality you are campaigning for Barrack Obama. All I can say to those folks is – “idiot!” [please excuse the strong language]

Mitt or Newt? Pick your poison.

No, not until it truly is inevitable.

Vizzini: But it’s so simple. All I have to do is divine from what I know of you: are you the sort of man who would put the poison into his own goblet or his enemy’s? Now, a clever man would put the poison into his own goblet, because he would know that only a great fool would reach for what he was given. I am not a great fool, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of you. But you must have known I was not a great fool, you would have counted on it, so I can clearly not choose the wine in front of me

Guess which one created jobs and which one took governmentnt funds while helping destroy the housing market and nearly destroying the banking industry.

My money’s on Newt as the anti-capitalist.

Basilsbest on December 12, 2011 at 8:13 PM

Pick your poison? Romney ventured into capitalism and created jobs and riches. Gingrich stuck his nose in the public trough and promoted the GSE which caused the housing industry bubble and contributed to the near collapse of the banking industry and the imposition of the banking regulations which are preventing a recovery.

One is a poison and the other is a nutrient and only a fooll doesn’t know which one is which.

That we are even considering gingrich shows how screwed we are. The guy is so wrong it makes my teeth hurt. I was going to list whats wrong with Newt, but realized that debating with insanity is the first step down insanity road.

Is consulting a non-capitalist vocation? Hypocrites all … a pox on all houses!

However, between the two (Newt or Mitt), it’s an easy choice: America Needs Newt Now!

[No more Wimps in the White House (Mitt: this means you)!]

Go Newt!

Because Obama is in the 99%? It would be one of the easiest comebacks to make, and shame on Romney, should he get the nod, if he doesn’t immediately counter with that. The tax returns are out there.
