Virginia Tech, the scene of an horrific massacre in 2007, is in the news again for a fresh round of gun-related violence.
A suspect there opened fire on Thursday, killing a police in the midst of a routine traffic stop, then ran toward a parking lot on campus. A second person was found dead in that parking lot sometime later.
The suspect, described as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat with a neon green brim, a maroon hoodie, and a backpack, remains at large. Police believe he is still armed. (Avideo report from CBS affiliate WDBJ may be found here.)
Initially, the case was under the purview of campus police, but Virginia State Police have announced that they will be taking charge of the investigation. A campus-wide alert has been issued, urging students and faculty to stay inside behind lock doors.
The university made grim headlines in 2007, when a student gunman killed 32 faculty members and fellow students before turning the gun on himself. Reports of a possible gunman at Virginia Tech emerged again on August 4 resulting in a lockdown that lasted five hours. The alleged gunman was never found.
