How do you solve a problem like Obama: Let the games begin

With apologies to Rodgers and Hammerstein, a spate of headlines today touching on a common theme—the relative electability of Barack Obama in 2012—has prompted some musings.

Leading the pack this morning was a Wall Street Journal article by Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen, two of the more rational living Democratic pollsters, arguing that Obama should step aside to make way for “the one candidate who would become, by acclamation, the nominee of the Democratic Party: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.”

The suggestion is not an original one, nor is it surprising coming from a pair of old-school and hence centrist Democrats. Their argument is intriguing, within reason. They write:

Having unique experience in government as first lady, senator and now as Secretary of State, Mrs. Clinton is more qualified than any presidential candidate in recent memory, including her husband.

I would agree that Clinton has made a decent showing as secretary of state, but that is largely a function of context: She is a member of a presidential cabinet that contains as many kooks and boobs as it does statesmen. In the company of the likes of Timothy Geithner, Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano, and Steven Chu, it is easy to look competent. Which is in no way to say that Clinton has been devoid of missteps since signing on as head of State.

Caddell and Schoen’s column must cut ice because it touched a nerve at Salon.com, which issued a “rebuttal” of sorts frankly (if amusingly) titled “Fake Democratic pollsters have stupid idea.” The author, Alex Pareene, calls Caddell and Schoen “two loser ‘Democratic’ ‘pollsters’,” implying that they are neither and claiming that they are arguing that

if Democrats want to succeed electorally, they must immediately cease being Democrats, and become, instead, Republicans.

Interesting. I wouldn’t have thought support for Hillary Clinton was big among Republicans.

Andrew Malcolm, writing at Investors Business Daily, announces the official beginning of the “Dump Obama” movement, asking, “Guess who’d replace him?” His column, too, seems to follow Caddell and Schoen’s, except that he agrees with their prescription, writing:

Despite a call for a primary challenge by Sen. Bernie Sanders, no one seriously expected one to emerge. Although such intra-party struggles allow unhappy ideological factions to vent frustrations, of which the left has many with Obama, they also virtually foreclose victory in the ensuing general elections.

However, there’s still ample time for simmering party unhappiness with Obama and the growing fear of losing the White House and the Senate to reach a boiling point. So, the big money folks on both coasts quietly go to Obama next spring, urge him to be a realist and pull the plug on his reelection plans.

Finally, there is Richard Salsman’s article in Forbes titled “President Obama’s Hopeless ‘Malaise’ Moment.” Instead of focusing on Democrats’ frustration with Obama, he addresses Obama’s frustrations with just about everyone but mainly his favorite whipping boys, the Republicans in Congress and the corporate “fat cats” on Wall Street.

He equates Obama’s current predicament to that of another extremely unpopular Democratic president, Jimmy Carter. Hence the title of the piece. Salsman writes:

Just like Carter’s anti-capitalist mentality, Obama’s also calls for ‘sacrifice’ (as if that’s ‘noble’), instead of celebrating those among us who seek to live and gain by creating and exchanging new values, whether material or intangible. For Carter and Obama, those are ‘greedy’ and ‘selfish’ pursuits (true) which only deprive our lives of true meaning (false). As such, each man imposed regulatory-spending-tax-monetary regimes that stifled private-sector incentives, sapped entrepreneurial vitality, and chilled investor risk-taking.

Another problem that Obama shares with Carter is an implicit vote of no confidence from his own party. Although the budget deal in Congress recently fell through, it is one brokered by congressional Democrats and Republicans. Obama’s own deal had been roundly rejecting by his fellow party members as well as the “enemy” party he is so fond of lambasting.

Democrats are looking for an “overcharge” button?

I’m more interested in how we solve the problem of the voters who voted for Obama, the corrupt antiamericans in congress, the capitulating Republicans, the radical majority in news media, etc. I just watched “Mr Smith goes to Washington” this weekend, and it touches on problems that are still with us. Unfortunately we no longer have a single Mr Smith that can win a fight in 24 hours. Not one fight, and we have many fights that need to be fought.

Unlike Cater with Ted Kennedy — where Teddy’s push from the left to challenge Jimmy in 1980 was in part driven by their fantasy to re-establish Camelot that had been sidetracked by Chappaquiddick — no one on the left, and probably not even the Hillary crowd, would have the huevos at this late date to go after Obama, unless they were assured the Congressional Black Caucus would be on their side providing cover.

The Dems have gotten their own special interest groups so attuned to playing the race card as a political weapon, they wouldn’t dare mount a challenge and risk it being used against them, let alone the difficulty of putting the Democratic coalition with black voters back together again in time for the November ’12 vote. Obama holds the cards here, and his team would have a few qualms about playing the race card on any challengers within their own party as they would against the eventual GOP nominee.

I don’t want to see him drop out and go back to Chicago claiming “Mission Accomplished” or, worse yet, offered a Supreme Court Justice position as a consolation prize from Hillary! for “taking one for the team”. As another commenter stated a month or so ago when the prospect of Obama dropping out was suggested, “I want to see him beaten like a rented mule.”

…offered a Supreme Court Justice position as a consolation prize from Hillary! for “taking one for the team”.

I agree, that’s a fairly frightening thought.

Don’t be surprised if Obama doesn’t offer one to Hillary, if he gets a chance to appoint a 3rd lefty Justice to SCOTUS. Allowing Obama even near another supreme court appointment scares me to death.

How do you solve a problem like Obama? Looking at Frank Rich’s disgusting column trying to paint Lee Harvey Oswald as a right-winger, there’s at least one possibility we should seriously consider: that the Left is grooming their very own James Earl Ray to remove him.

Before you dismiss this as paranoia, consider how Frank Rich would paint it: just another racist reich-winger who heard the dog-whistle. And if you think George Soros or Bill Ayers, to name a couple, couldn’t recruit someone like that, and give him a background (real or faked) of supporting a conservative politician or organization (Sarah Palin? the Tea Party?), you badly underestimate the Left’s Machiavellian ruthlessness and fanaticism. And even if the Secret Service prevented it, just the attempt would be useful to the Left.

That would be the worst scenario in that he’d go down in history as a martyr, taken down in his prime. No, like others have said, I want him sent home via a landslide rejection at the polls. This is the only way to refudiate his term in office and the libtarded marxist ideology.

I strongly feel that we will never be rid of Giggles. Ever. Even if he is “beaten like a rented mule” he will still show up on talk shows and in speaches doing his “Carter-best” to undermine whoever his replacement is from now until he reaches “elder statesman” age and beyond. And mark my words he will run in 2016 if he loses next year. He is too much of a narcisist not to.

We will never be rid of him. Ever. Get used to the purple-lipped, whistleing-S, elitist, condescending, scrawny, jug-eared b@st@rd.

It would be great if Romney didn’t suck so bad. When Carter was wallowing his way through his first term we had Reagan to look forward to. Romney is more like… a Democrat.

Zero ain’t gonna quit. He thinks he’s doing a super job. Look at all he’s accomplished in a short time. He’s mandated healthcare, bought us 2 car companies, given out enough money to stimulate all his friends, stirred up the muslims and is allowing Iran to finally get their bomb. What’s left? Oh yeah, total control from birth to grave of our lives.
