College Football-Open Thread: This Weeks Marquee Match-up, Oregon vs. Stanford

posted at 10:38 am on November 12, 2011 by

Since Mr. Morrissey’s been doing the NFL on Sundays, (and there’s been interest in College Football), I started an open thread here in the Greenroom last week.  The LSU/ALABAMA game was a match-up made in heaven for CBS as they recorded the highest viewer-ship in 22 years.  With the season winding down, and the BCS Championship still in question, all eyes will be on #4 Stanford when they host #7 Oregon tonight at 8pm (5pm on the west coast).  I don’t foresee any upsets with the top three today, (LSU, OKLAHOMA ST., ALABAMA), yet this is College Football.

Since this is an open thread, everyone’s welcome to post about the events that has rocked Penn State, (just try to keep it classy), and the game between #12 Penn St and #19 Nebraska at noon, (EDST-9am Pacific), will be interesting to say the least.

As a West Coast native, and a longtime Pac 10/12 fan, I’ll pose this question: Does a one loss Alabama deserve to be ranked ahead of an undefeated Stanford?  Is the SEC any more competitive than the Pac 12 this year?  Or, more fairly, has Bama’s strength of schedule been any more rigorous as the Cardinal?  Of course, this will all be moot if Oregon pulls out a mild upset.

Current BCS Rankings, (1-12):

1LSU 9-0 2 Oklahoma State 9-0 3 Alabama 8-1 4 Stanford 9-0 5 Boise State 8-0 6 Oklahoma 8-1 7 Oregon 8-1 8 Arkansas 8-1 9 Clemson 8-1 10 Virginia Tech 8-1 11 Houston 9-0 12 Penn State 8-1

Update: In case you missed the post by Allahpundit yesterday, here’s the link.  It’s a great read with plenty of comments.  ESPN is reporting that Ohio State is facing more infractions/penalties from the NCAA.  Interesting title to the story: “Ohio State now faces ‘failure to monitor’“.  This should leave us all wondering how the NCAA will react to PSU’s “failure to monitor”, or if they’ll figure losing an icon like Paterno, (and letting the criminal justice system run its course), is enough punishment to the program.

Blowback

Does a one loss Alabama deserve to be ranked ahead of an undefeated Stanford?

Oh, I think the question is: Does a one loss Oregon deserve to ranked ahead of a one loss Alabama? After today, they both will have only one loss, and it will be to the #1 ranked team.

You can’t be serious. Besides, Alabama beat Penn State, which, I’ve just learned this week, is the greatest football program is the history of college football.

You know, they used to ask the same question about the Big 10 and the Ohio State.

Just caught most of the Penn St. entrance onto the field and the succeeding activities. Very impressive, I hope that the students and athletes can focus their concern on victims, not the pride of Penn State football.

The beginning of the Penn State game was extremely touching. Brought lots of tears to my eyes.

As for my Gophers – beat Wisconsin.

So that’s why you’re “gophergirl.” Good luck — I don’t think this year’s Golden Gophers are going to submarine the Badgers, but luck never hurts. Tough year for Minnesota, but y’all did hang onto Floyd.

If they play as well as they did last week against Michigan State I’ll be happy. I just won’t want them to get destroyed – especially at home against icky Wisconsin.

We’re going to have a couple more “tough” years but we have the right coach and he will turn it around.

Ohio State just lost any chance at getting Urban Meyer.

Wow — Wake and Clemson tied at end of 4th.

I started an open thread here in the Greenroom last week.

Thank you for this — can AP or Ed bump it up to the main page for a few hours to collect more eyeballs?

John the Libertarian on November 12, 2011 at 3:26 PM

Alabama bumped to no. 3? Seems fair, and I am for Stanford a hundred percent of the way.

John the Libertarian on November 12, 2011 at 3:28 PM

BTW, Rovin… it’s Cardinal singular.

John the Libertarian on November 12, 2011 at 3:29 PM

Well it looks like Penn State just got knocked out of the top 20, so they may not even contend for a bowl game.

Dang it, I never think to check the Green Room until it’s too late.

PSU’s lost another one. Us diehard fans will spend the rest of the season wondering how much difference the “News shock”, subsequent media-blitz, and associated ‘stigma’ caused.

I’m more interested to see what coaching staff changes take place before next spring.

listens2glenn on November 12, 2011 at 5:12 PM

Are the TCU Horn Dogs going to upset Boise State or are am I having an acid flashback?

SlaveDog on November 12, 2011 at 6:03 PM

Waaaahhhhh my Gophers. Not that I thought they had a chance in heck to win but to get walloped at home by our most hated rival. Waaahhhh!

gophergirl on November 12, 2011 at 6:14 PM

listens2glenn on November 12, 2011 at 5:12 PM

I hope that there is no more surprises and that Penn State can begin to move forward.

As for the coaching staff – I think they should completely clean house and start fresh. While it’s not fair I think it’s needed.

gophergirl on November 12, 2011 at 6:16 PM

Oh and go Stanford!

GO STANFORD!

John the Libertarian on November 12, 2011 at 8:09 PM

In the bird to bird match up, the Ducks score first.

SlaveDog on November 12, 2011 at 8:40 PM

Stanford needed that last score to stay in the game.

Incidentally, John, in the context of the sentence, it’s not singular, it’s possessive, as in “the Cardinal’s strength of schedule“.

Rovin on November 12, 2011 at 9:42 PM

Oregon’s got a chance for the upset, I think.

SlaveDog on November 12, 2011 at 9:44 PM

Rovin on November 12, 2011 at 9:42 PM

There was no possessive prior, or I wouldn’t have mentioned it. No biggee. I used to call them the Cardinals when I went there.

John the Libertarian on November 12, 2011 at 10:53 PM

I call Stanford the Candy Pink.

Ducks are schooling them tonight.

The referee for this game is a hoot.
