It’s come to this: Obama needs to tell audience to clap at applause line

On Monday a truck carrying Barack Obama’s teleprompter, presidential seals, podiums, and sound equipment was stolen from a Virginia hotel parking lot. Police later recovered the stolen vehicle, though the whereabouts of the contents have yet to be determined.

No problem, though. The White House keeps a backup teleprompter just in case. Besides, a teleprompter isn’t the piece of equipment the president most desperately needs at this juncture. That would be an “Applause” sign.

The Los Angeles Times reports that at the president’s last stop on his most recent taxpayer-funded, non-campaign bus tour, only “one or two people clapped” at his mention of the American Jobs Act. Obama is quoted as responding, “You can go ahead and clap. Go ahead, nothing wrong with it.”

It’s not as though the president was expecting a thunderous ovation to begin with. There were 100 or so people in the audience at the campaign stop—I mean, jobs tour—to begin with.

That’s got to be tough for anyone, let alone someone with the president’s towering ego. When you’re used to playing to sellout crowds in vast amphitheaters, it’s rough delivering one of your patented golden-tongued orations and receiving only a polite smacking of hands.

Perhaps it’s a sound that Obama had better grow accustomed to. Given his continuing low approval ratings and commensurately high national rate of unemployment, he may soon be listening to the sounds of silence.

When he said that American used to have good stuff, I think he meant he used to be able to get good stuff.

Obama is quoted as responding, “You can go ahead and clap. Go ahead, nothing wrong with it.”

That’s hysterically brutal.
