Westboro Baptist Church to picket Steve Jobs’ funeral

While most of the nation mourns the loss of one of America’s great all-time innovators, Apple’s Steve Jobs, Margie Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church wrote on Twitter that her organization plans to demonstrate at Jobs’s funeral. The tweet, posted on October 5, the day Jobs died, reads:
Westboro will picket his funeral. He had a huge platform; gave God no glory & taught sin.
A subsequent tweet, noted by the Huffington Post, reads, “No peace for man who served self, not God.”
One is tempted to ask whether these people know any shame, but the answer to that question is self-evident. As Phelps, an attorney and daughter of the cult’s founder, Fred Phelps, explained to Chris Wallace on FOX News Sunday in March, he and just about everyone else in the country is going to hell.
In the remarkably distorted view of the church’s followers, just about the only people good enough to merit eternal salvation are the hundred odd (and I do mean “odd”) members of the church.
Having long made a spectacle of themselves at the memorial services of fallen members of the military, holding aloft signs reading “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and other charming sentiments, Westboro reached a new low in January, when they threatened to picket the funeral of 9-year-old Christina Greene. The child was the youngest of the six victims shot to death in Tucson by a crazed gunman whose primary target was Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. Happily, the group begged off after counter-protesters in Tucson made it clear they would do everything in their power to insulate the memorial service from crazed interlopers.
In May, the church won a victory for its unique brand of lunacy when the Supreme Court upheld their appeal of a lawsuit that would have banned them from picketing at funerals. They were in the news again most recently in May when they expressed their intention to picket the funeral of former First Lady Betty Ford, calling her an adultress because she had been married previously.
And now this. I can understand that Phelps and company have no tears to shed for Steve Jobs, despite the critical and far-reaching ways in which his genius reshaped technology and communication. But out of respect for his children, the youngest of whom is 13, they could at least limit their hatred to print.
One hopes for Margie Phelps’s sake that members of the cult don’t communicate by means of iPhone, one of Steve Jobs’s gifts to current and future generations. Even the god they worship likely has no stomach for hypocrisy.

My faith says, God will deal with these so called people of faith. Let us hope the family of Jobs has lots of security to keep these below worms far away. RIP Mr. Jobs and may God comfort your family.

Happy to share. Sort of ties in to a common theme of people protesting against someone/something like Steve Jobs or Capitalism while at the same time taking advantage of products produced by those same people/systems. Maybe we can put the Westboro Baptists with the OccupyWallStreet folks and they can all pitch in on a good iPhone Cellular plan.

WBC doesn’t care a whit about salvation or anything else other than money. The whole family just uses 1st Amendment lawsuits to enrich themselves. Their abomination of a church is just a cover for the ability to say outrageous things in public and get someone on tape doing something illegal for which they are sued for violating their civil rights.
They are modern day practitioners of simony, using their faith to enrich themselves. Only instead of scamming their believers like Kabbala or Scientology, they scam the public using the legal system

They are just practicing their libertarian lifestyles. I think they are the perfect poster child for why libertarianism is a dead philosophy. They seem to use every aspect of our culture that touches on libertarian thought to live their personal individual lives at the expense of others. They, are in fact, the power children I use when arguing with libertarians. I start by laying out what appears to be a blatant violation of someone’s libertarian right to property. Just happens to turn out that it is the same story as what the WBC happens to do, or the activists gays and their allies do every month of every year. Then all of a sudden all the arguments make a 180 turn and it is totally legitimate free speech, even though it also hits every other aspect that makes their actions illegal.

Well, you certainly have a problem with freedom. The fact that the founders weren’t as “libertarian” as activists try to point out, it was certainly closer to what we are heading with under GOP and Democrat leadership.
When your a lot older, it might not be shocking to see the GOP fighting to keep taxes at 70% while the Dems cry and try to get it to over 80%.

As I said, they are the perfect example of life under libertarianism.
Under libertarianism the government would be struggling to get $100 effective today dollars from a productive citizen at a 5% tax rate over a period of a year. Because when push comes to shove, having an environment where people are free to be productive comes second to an environment where people are free to express themselves as individuals different to everyone else.

Well, these Westboro clowns seem to have become completely unglued. They at least used to have a focus, vile though it was. Now I guess they just plan to picket everything. The good news about that may be that it will dent their ability to garner attention.

They do not want attention. They want to offend someone using free speech such that they attack them so that the church can sue the person who attacked them or the city/police for failure to protect their rights.
Like I said, it is the absolute most perfect group of people to be the standard bearers for the libertarian world view. It fits exactly to what I imagined libertarianism would be before these guys showed up in my radar.
