Open Thread~Baseball Playoffs: Down to the Final Four
posted at 8:57 pm on October 7, 2011 by Rovin
I’ll try to post some updates, but in the mean time……have at it!
Update: Final four field is set: Texas Rangers @ Detroit Tigers, (ALCS) & St. Louis Cardinals @ Milwaukee Brewers, (NLCS)
Derek Holland will start Game 2 for the Texas Rangers, manager Ron Washington confirmed. C.J. Wilson is starting Game 1 on Saturday night in Arlington.
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that Justin Verlander will start Game 1 with Max Scherzer, orginally tabbed for the fourth game, going up against Holland in Game 2. Doug Fister will pitch Game 3 and Rick Porcello will now go in Game 4 instead of Sunday.
NLCS Starting rotations: (still pending)

Arod’s strike out made me happy, but I know that Detroit is going to be a tough series for my Rangers.

Nice try, Rovin. Football is getting serious long about now. Hard to compete with that. (A little more excitement in the game 5s yesterday would have helped.)
Oklahoma 41, Texas 10. Big

“A little more excitement”???
Real baseball fans will remember Carpenter’s three-hit gem for decades. Only Bob Gibson could compare in the Cards franchise. I saw, (live), a classic Gibson/Marichal duel in SF back in the 60′s. Half the afternoon crowd was almost asleep baking in a rare warm day at Candlestick, but the other half, (like myself), was mesmerized by the precision and execution of every pitch between two of the greatest “delivery-men” in the game. Exciting? You betcha!
(Of course you noticed Oklahoma St. scored 56 points…..in the first half!)

Stupid rain.

Now, you are right, Rovin; it was a deciding game that will be remembered for a long time. (Maybe almost as long as John Denkinger’s blown call in Game 6 against KC.) Even one of the St. Louis sports writers compared him to Gibson.
Yes, Rovin, they did…against Kansas…you know, the team that gave up 66 to GaTech? But this much is true — If the Sooners want to play for another national title, they will have to still be undefeated after their Dec. 3 trip to Stillwater…In the meantime, to paraphrase Coach Barry from decades past, dropping half a hundred on the Longhorns — not bad, not bad at all.

The pitching duel between Carpenter and Halladay (who by the way are good friends according to media reports) seems to have become an instant classic – this is what makes baseball stand out from every thing else – october can be such an incredible month !!
Would have loved to see the game live on TV – but one cannot expect such things when living half the world away, almost 10 hours ahead of the Eastern time zone.
Although the Yanks (my favorite team) lost, i hope that the Rangers and Tigers go all the way to a Game 7 – not sure if the Brewers can keep up with the red hot Red Birds but wont be surprised if the NLCS went to a Game 7 as well.Cheers from India.
