Left Goes Ballistic Over Caricature of the Obamas

posted at 2:54 pm on February 16, 2011 by

A two-panel comic depiction of the president and Mrs. Obama has commentators on the left all wee-weed up. The strip, which originated on Andrew Breitbart’s Big Journalism website, shows a zaftig First Lady chowing down on a ginormous stack of burgers, while the president, sporting a pair of Dumbo-size ears, nibbles at what looks like rabbit food.

The purpose of the strip was to highlight what its creators, James Hudnall and Batton Lash, perceived as the First Couple’s hypocrisy in serving bratwurst, cheeseburgers, and buffalo wings at their recent White House Super Bowl Party even as Michelle Obama crusades to alter the American diet.

Whether you agree that the Super Bowl menu was hypocritical (I don’t) or that Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign is invasive and misguided (I do), the liberal reaction to the cartoon was over the top and smacks of a double standard.

Simon Maloy of Media Matters writes:

If there’s a ‘joke’ in there, I’m missing it. This is the sort of stuff most of us left at the grade school playground.

MSNBC’s easily excitable Lawrence O’Donnell devotes 6 minutes—a lifetime by television standards—to airing his grievances over what he calls a “racist obscenity” targeting the “most famous African American woman in the world, and the most admired.”

In defense of the cartoon, James Hudnall writes:

As a classical liberal (aka Libertarian) I’m opposed to the nanny state. The first lady has every right to express her opinions about obesity or try to bring awareness to the issue, but when an unelected official starts dictating what industries should do, it deserves our scorn.

Responding to the charge of racism, Batton Lash writes:

Cartooning—specifically political cartooning—has always been about exaggeration, whether it was Nixon’s prominent jowls, Carter’s toothy smile, or Bush II’s beady eyes. If our current president is exempt because of the color of his skin, I think that would be racist.

But these are arguments to which many on the left are tone deaf. They assail racism, but only insofar as it advances their political agenda. Liberals are willing to look the other way when white fellow progressives call for the lynching of a black Supreme Court Justice who happens to be conservative. They condone the use of racially charged terms—Sambo, monkey, and minstrel—so long as they are being directed at a black conservative like Herman Cain (or “house Negro” in the leftist vernacular).

A personal note in closing: Some years ago, I wrote the restaurant column for a newspaper where Bat Lash was the resident cartoonist. For one Christmas issue, he did a particularly hilarious caricature of me stuffing my face on a giant slab of cake. Going by liberal standards, I suppose I should have viewed the drawing as the obvious slur on Jews for which it was intended.

It’s not racist. It’s not offensive. It’s honest, and true. They are the very epitomy of hypocrites. Preaching one thing to the rest of us, and behaving the exact opposite of what they preach.

Bottom line is….Libs need to stop dishing it, if they can’t take it. Simple as that.

It looks kind of like some of the Bush cartoons I’ve seen. Some of them gave him giant ears for some reason, too.

(doh, ignore that last example above… soon as I hit Submit I realized that Mandela should not have been included in my list)

Well, HP, you know the old “Jews and cake” hate slur. I grew up on it, as I’m sure everyone else did.

Another left-wing episode of All Dish-Out, No Take.

It is true of the Obama’s that they do not live the life they would inflict on the rest of us. The thing that got me and still does is Obama’s statement on the economy that “..he feels our pain.” Yeah, sure. The only thing lacking in the hypocrisy level of this statement was that it was NOT made from the golf course or the rental place on The Vineyard.

May the ghost of Martin Luther King, Jr. haunt these nincompoops.

“You call that ‘racist’, you leftover hippies?! While a black man is PRESIDENT no less?! I’ll tell you clueless little clowns what’s racist!”

“Having crosses burned in your yard by cowards in bedsheets – that’s racist.”

“Not being able to shop at half the stores in your own hometown – and getting treated like dirt in the ones you can – because “Billy Bob Bucktooth the good ol’ boys club member” thinks he has a ‘right’ to deny business based on skin color – that’s racist.”

“Getting fast food from the ‘colored window’ and never getting to eat in a restaurant – that’s racist.”

“Having to sit on the back of the bus or get arrested – that’s racist.”

So, uh… I’m confused. What’s the racist part? Eating cheeseburgers? Is it racist to eat cheeseburgers? Or is having large ears racist? Or is it someone eating cheeseburgers with someone with large ears? Help me out here.

The left seems to like the rop type, they get bent our of shape over everything and riot! I, we just need to look at who is getting bent out of shape and for what the bent out of shape is about. It doesn’t take much it seems to get them going.

‘Li’l Bush’ was an animated series on Comedy Central. Deafening silence re: depiction of Li’l Condi.

That cartoon looks oddly like the Guardian portrayal of Bush.

The Obama’s had a fat and high calorie super bowl feast, all the while telling us to lose weight, cut calories and eat veggies. The WIC program no longer includes white potatoes, yet the Obama’s had german potato salad as a dish in their food orgy. Obama’s are pictured all the time eating french fries, made with white potatoes. So the message is that white potatoes are okay for the high falutin’ Obama’s, but not the poor children in our country. Pathetic, absolutely pathetic. They had a great opportunity to present a good example of healthful eating and blew it with all their high calorie, fat laden foods. Obama’s want to tell us how to eat and how much to eat yet don’t listen to their own advice.

So this is the new theme of Portnoy’s Complaint?

Say, there’s a line I’ve never heard before in the 40 years since that novel was published.

Hmmm, where was the outrage of Ted R.’s caricature of a famous african-american–specifically Condi Rice — of a few years ago? Not to mention other loathsome spewings, such as Hate-F***s, and other musings on hurting her???

C’mon, while those ladies may have achieved some significant things, they certainly never accomplished the one thing that has made Michelle Obama so famous and admired: marrying well.
