Michael Moore walks back from rape comment, but still can’t spare a dime

Michael Moore apparently does have the capacity to know right from wrong with this clarification for his recent comments about the Julian Assange rape case being a “bunch of hooey” and Tommy Christopher has the wrap of the story:
A week after Countdown host Keith Olbermann and guest Michael Moore sparked a Twitter protest over their dismissive treatment of rape allegations against Wikileaks founderJulian Assange, Moore made an appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show in which he failed to address the protest directly, but made their imprint obvious in his transformed rhetoric on rape accusations. In a crowning irony, the man whose zeal for transparency-God Julian Assange started this protest finally made direct acknowledgement of it…in a private Twitter message to #MooreAndMe creator Sady Doyle.
Moore’s clarification on The Rachel Maddow Show went like this:
Every woman who claims to have been sexually assaulted or raped has to be, must be, taken seriously. Those charges have to be investigated to the fullest extent possible. For too long, and too many women have been abused in our society, because they were not listened to, and they just got shoved aside… The older people here remember how it used to be. It’s not that much better now, it got a little better, because of the women’s movement made that happen.
His statements must be cleansing to his soul and address Doyle, but the timing does appear that they are also in response to the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network’s (RAINN) statement and other mainstream outrage:
Yana Walton of the Women’s Media Center told The Daily Caller that progressive activists such as Michael Moore and Keith Olbermann, in their treatment and coverage of the charges against Assange, have made light of rape allegations and put blame on the alleged victims.
“When sexual violence and rape is such a huge part of women’s lives internationally I don’t think it is ever helpful to legitimize it. Rape is rape is rape is rape, and should be prosecuted as such,” Walton said.
It is not, however, just the left that has caused harm to women with the coverage of this case, Walton says. According to Walton, it is anti-female to care about rape only when there are other factors at play — in this case, the leakage of highly sensitive documents.
“Rape should be taken seriously regardless of the situation. And to sort of pick and chose when you deploy gender and care for women and sexual violence against women is doing just as much of a disservice to women,” Walton said.
For Moore, I’m sure this was hard as it took him a week to make it right and walk back his insensitive comments. As cleansing this is to the soul, Moore needs to do, er, more. He has no problem donating his cash to politicians and alleged rapists, so I’m going to take it one step further and ask him to really show some compassion for victims of sexual abuse by donating the same amount he gave Assange for bail–$20,000–to RAINN. RAINN was co-founded by singer and rape survivor Tori Amos and Moore could truly show his Hollywood pals, some of whom are survivors of rape and sexual abuse, and women everywhere that he really is sorry. As for Keith Olbermann, well you could toss in a few bucks, too.
I know the people at RAINN. They work tirelessly to provide counseling to rape and sexual abuse victims–especially with the new online hotline–which I helped raise the primary funding for along with their team a couple of years ago. I have friends who are surviviors and I’m sure you do too. Moore has the opportunity to really make a difference now and walk the talk. With money tight for so many donors in this brutal economy, donations to charities are down, but with Moore’s movies grossing over $187 million, I’m sure he doesn’t need the money as one of his favorite political organizations, MoveOn, tells us. So, Mr. Moore just how compassionate to rape victims are you? Will you click and donate? Donations are tax-deductible, if that helps.

After listening to the Countdown discussion with Moore, my impression is unchanged that he’s about half as bright as he thinks he is and the other half is full of crap , but it’s pretty clear that what he said isn’t dismissive of rape.
He’s talking about Assange being arrested, held for a huge bail, and then KEPT IN JAIL after having the bond posted, without Assange ever being indicted for a crime.
And your link to Tommy Christopher shows that Christopher is saying that same thing.
Now, I’m sure that RAINN is a good and worthy charity, but really SusanAnne, you writing a shirty smearjob of a story isn’t the way to go about raising funds for the group.

Audi–I have always maintained the hooey comment was about the “case.” I even put it in the headline on a previous post. Tommy does a great job in covering the piece. If you take the time to reread even the original post, you will see, that I have indeed separated rape from the Assange “rape case.” Jezebel did not keep it in context, wheras Tommy and I did. Instead, you seemingly look for ways to rip me–no worries though. BTW, I’m not raising money for RAINN, just calling checkmate and Moore should put his money where his mouth is and RAINN was started by Tori Amos (a celebrity) so that should appeal to him as she is one of their own. RAINN is also the largest sexual abuse charity in the country that is why Moore should donate to them.

No SusanAnne, this post several times
assertssmearingly suggest that Moore is guilty of saying something about rape for which he must repent. His statements must be cleansing to his soul
For Moore, I’m sure this was hard as it took him a week to make it right and walk back his insensitive comments.
He has no problem donating his cash to politicians and alleged rapists
And saying that you wrote some previous story that doesn’t smear the dude doesn’t do a damn thing to make this post less unfair.

Dear SusanAnne. I took the time and went and read your previous post, just as you said I should.
In that post you wrote
Moore’s outrageous comments completely dismissing the alleged rapes….
so when you right to me
I’ve got to say that either you don’t understand truth, or you are adverse to telling it.
Jeepers SusanAnne…… you disrespect yourself when you write so dishonestly.

Hmmm…very interesting spin, Audi, but, by Moore calling the rape cases a bunch of hooey, he dismisses the alleged rapes.
And…you cherry pick:
Funny how so many were outraged, but you’re again cherry picking. Oh well…Merry Christmas…and thanks for commenting!

SusanAnne,
ooooh, dear, dear lady.
we know when you’re being naughty…..so be good and tell the truth for goodness sake!!!
May you and your family and all of us have a Merry Christmas … and a fair and honest New Year, SusanAnne.

Audiculous, for a self professed Conservative you never fail to take the same position as a liberal.
I wonder who you’re lying to more, us or yourself?
BTW, Moore did dismiss the rape charges solely because a fellow America basher was being accused.
Hard Right on December 23, 2010 at 9:33 PM
Hard Right,
sorry son, but Moore was talking about the legal procedures being abused and being his usual foolish self alleging that some authoritarian government conspiracy was going on there.
all I heard him say about the charges was that the guy was stuck in jail and THERE WERE NO CHARGES. No indictment. He was wanted for questioning about something.
Moore, lefty paranoid basher that he is, couldn’t be dismissive about rape charges. He doesn’t think that there are any rape charges,
My position, HaRi isn’t liberal or conservative about this, it’s Hard Logical.
Your sloppy thinking… is that conservative or is it liberal ?
audiculous on December 23, 2010 at 10:19 PM
Obviously.

“He’s talking about Assange being arrested, held for a huge bail, and then KEPT IN JAIL after having the bond posted, without Assange ever being indicted for a crime.”
1. The reason he was kept in jail was that his bail was appealed. That is perfectly reasonable, as the reason his bail was refused first time was because it was thought he may flee jurisdiction.
2. He is a foreign national (in the UK) accused of a serious crime in another foreign country.
3. Despite all your falsehoods, Moore quite clearly stated that the charges were bogus, and the clear implication being that the women are lying.
