Triple the Fun: Three Controversial Amendments Crammed Into Military Spending Bill

What’s one way to cement your “support” of the military, gay rights, public funding for abortion and open-borders policies while accusing the opposition of obstructionism? Shoehorning them into a military spending bill just before recess, mere weeks before midterm elections, that’s how.
Not just one, but three hotly-contested social issues are lumped into the bill. While debate over amendments is matter of course for military budget bills, Harry Reid has approved only three. The lucky few? The Dream Act, a repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and a repeal of the law prohibiting military hospitals from performing abortions overseas. Voting begins today, according to FOX News:
The defense bill is one of the top orders of business on Capitol Hill before Congress adjourns for the remainder of the campaign season.
Reid needs 60 votes Tuesday to start debate. If he reaches that, he would still need to corral 60 votes on any amendment that is filibustered. And then he would need 60 votes again to shut down a filibuster preventing final passage, before moving onto the final vote.
Michelle Malkin has a great write up on the subversive Dream Act, as well as contact information for all related Senators. If inclined to call, you might want to mention your opposition to any taxpayer-funded hospital aborting babies on your dime and your opinion of the DADT repeal being crammed into what should be an obligatory, bipartisan effort to provide the Pentagon with the resources it needs to protect us. These issues should be handled independently, voted on openly after fair debate, not antagonistically stuffed into routine spending bills (which, incidentally, appears to be the M.O. of this liberal Congress).
Such opportunistic rump-covering from Harry Reid should surprise no one. Yet, putting the military in the center of a political sniping war over controversial social issues should outrage every American.
