Beck vs. Sharpton: And the Winner Is…

posted at 1:34 pm on August 29, 2010 by

Whether by design or by accident, as claimed, TV and radio commentator Glenn Beck chose the date and place of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech to stage his “Restore America” rally this past Saturday. Whether it was a success is difficult to say, although if turnout is any indication, the event — which attracted somewhere between 200,000 and half a million followers — accomplished its mission.

That mission, according to Beck, was to put the power-hungry “ruling class” in Washington on notice that its agenda and values are not those of the masses, who would be coming by presently to pick up the keys to the country.

Again whether intended or not, the mission had a second purpose. And that was to drive liberals further onto the defensive.

One of those liberals is race huckster Al Sharpton, who — obviously mindful of the adage “If you can’t beat ‘em, try harder to beat ‘em” — came to Washington to stage his own counter rally. So how did he do? Not surprisingly, Sharpton — who is increasingly yesterday’s news — drew a much smaller crowd that was mostly black. Equally unsurprising was his message, which was typically cloaked in racial grievance, punctuated by an insistence that King’s dream has yet to be attained.

The president, himself on the defensive, sent an emissary to Sharpton’s rally in the person of Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who spoke of education as the “civil rights issue of this generation.” Also on hand was Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who noted that King’s speech decades ago “reached to overcome the low points of our racial history,” insisting that “Glenn Beck’s march [sic] will change nothing.”

She is wrong. Beck has already helped foment a change in the country, if in no other way, than by stirring the pot of unrest that was already brewing when he began his television career. His event at the Lincoln Memorial didn’t resonate in the manner of Dr. King’s legendary speech, nor was it meant to. It was more of a national roll call, as contrasted with Sharpton’s counteroffensive, which was sound and fury signifying nothing. The White House ignores the attendance sheet from the Beck rally at its own peril.

Beck vs. Sharpton

The point that most forget is that Al Sharpton bills himself as a Christian Minister while Glenn Beck bills himself as a Political Pundit – huge difference here. Sharpton, who claims to be an American Baptist minister, has a duty to preach according to Christian principles and advance those principles. Have you heard him speak? His words are almost universally civil rights oriented and devoid of most Christian ideas beyond civil rights. That’s something that deserves deeper scrutiny; what ministry is Al Sharpton preaching toward and is it a Christian one? With Glenn Beck, that answer is clear.

I can’t (won’t) do online video, but if CSPAN has an archive of video from Sharpton’s rally, you should take the time to view it. NextGen professional agitators make their national appearance under the tutelage of Rev. Sharpton.

The winner is Glenn! His rally was about every shade of color in our country to be equal. It seems sharpton and those like him want to see to it that the ‘white’ shade needs to bend over backwards to anyone of a darker shade than white! Come Nov., as Kissmygrits said, every shade will vote to see if we can undo what a handfull of people in dc are dictating what the rest of American’s do. Thank God, people like Glenn are waking up American’s up!

Beck taught America more about the legacy of Martin Luther King in a few short hours, than the entire race hustle industry did in 40 years. hmmm maybe the race hustlers weren’t about teaching, but all about keeping the plantation intact.

Beck raised money for a charity at his event, while Sharpton raised attention for . . . himself.

koolbrease on August 29, 2010 at 3:31 PM

Beck suggested faith, hope, and charity as a way forward for the country.

Sharpton derided Beck, and the people at his event, as ‘haters’ of the civil rights movement.

As a non-religious person, I score this as Beck 1, Sharpton nothing.

I thought gay rights was the civil rights issue of this generation. I wish the left would make up their minds.

Sharpton is a discredited race hustler. It really grinds my gears that FNC continues to butter his bread.

the winner???? it ain’t the USA.

and it ain’t honesty.

two clowns uninterested in truth, honesty, or presently the world’s complexity.

Audiculous? Naw. S/he really believes that bulls**t s/he’s peddling.

gryphon202 on August 29, 2010 at 7:20 PM

hachiban,
I know what you mean. There are those here who would go for a hike near iran, get their hind ends arrested, and want our country to bail them out. Sorta sucks being them, doesn’t it? If these here are so unhappy here, Y’all are welcome to get out any time to go someplace where you feel more comfortable. I, me, myself will not miss you slugs!

The only ‘winning’ is which set of ideas are better. Neither one of the loony-tunes who presented them is worthy of anything from the American public except derisive laughter.

Dark-Star on August 29, 2010 at 9:02 PM

In 1963, Americans could look to Martin Luther King Jr. for leadership. In 2010, it’s Glenn Beck vs. Al Sharpton. That’s really sad.

RightOFLeft on August 29, 2010 at 11:33 PM

While I don’t think Beck is the messiah or anything like that, I think the really sad thing is that Sharpton is given any attention or credibility by anyone in the media. He came to fame on the back of a hoax and then incited a riot where people died. He should be in prison. As far as I know Beck hasn’t incited murder.

There have now been 47 anniversaries of the “King Dream Speech”. Other than Obama’s speech on the 45th anniversary, how many have been observed by Al Sharpton with a rally at the Lincoln Memorial?

SandyToes on August 30, 2010 at 8:47 AM

Spoke to a career DC Fireman this morning. He said Beck ralliers were the “nicest” they’ve EVER had. They even picked up after themselves. [Grade: A+]

Conversely, he said Sharpton made alot of enemies in his own ranks. They marched elderly and infirm folks +1.5 miles in the August heat. Many needed emergency assistance, wheelchairs recharged on fire appartus, etc. Those that endured, complained bitterly that Sharpton misled them about the length of long march. [Grade: F- (collosal fail)]

Shameful.

And that cheap b@stard Sharpton probably brought those people over to the hospitality tents at the Beck rally and took the free bottled water.

Where were these hypocrite education dunces when school vouchers were being eliminated in DC in order to feather the nests of teachers union members? Yeah right, leading the charge!
