FOX News: Whoa! Multiplayer video games put some people on the enemy team!

Did she say World War 2 wasn’t based on real people?
First of all…it’s 2010. Video games have existed for nearly 40 years now. Video games with multiplayer capabilities like Medal of Honor have been around for about 15 years. And guess what? You’ve been able to play the bad guys for all of that time. Ever heard of CounterStrike? Came out in 1999, and was multiplayer-only. One side was the counter-terrorists, with teams such as Delta Force and the British SAS. Take a second and imagine what the other side was. Yes, terrorists. How else could the game be played if you didn’t have another side playing the opposition? Battlefield 1942, another popular multiplayer game, based on World War 2 battles. One side was an Allied power, and the other side…this is going to blow you away, I know…an Axis power. Yes, you played as the Nazis, the Italians, or the Japanese. Otherwise you’d have a couple dozen people running around shooting at thin air. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and its sequels were both immensely popular because of their multiplayer, where one side played…wait for it…terrorists.
News flash: they were all video games. They were all imaginary. They all required two sides. If one side was the heroes, the other was the villains. This concept is not new.
Did NOBODY at Fox ever play Cowboys and Indians as a kid? Oops, I’m sorry. That’s racist, isn’t it?

Blowback

Shocker: You have a bunch of old fogies and businessmen running news organizations, an d they don’t know anything about video games.
Remember when Fox called Mass Effect a “New video game show[ing] full digital nudity and sex.”?

Yes, and when they lamented Grand Theft Auto San Andreas having a sex mini-game…which they failed to mention could only be accessed by ripping into the game’s programming on a computer, making it inaccessible to 99% of people.
If FOX hears that there might be controversy involving a video game, they leap on it like a hungry lion. It’s embarrassing.

This just in! Around the country children as young as 4 years old have been spotted pretending to be robbers! Other children have found this so intolerable that they become unofficial ‘cops’ and chase the young ‘robbers.’
Whether or not this trend will continue and transform millions of children into actual criminals remains unknown.
It’s 3:30pm, do you know where your children are?

The woman they interviewed looks like a joyless corpse. I know that isn’t an argument, but damn…
This game looks beautiful. Who gives a crap if one side plays against the Americans? It is a frigging game.

I place this revelation on the same plane of significance as the fact that Starcraft and Starcraft II let you play as the bloodthirsty gene-stealing zerg.

Very rarely post here.
Putting Fox News’ over-reaction to video games in general to the side, I’m not sure it isn’t wrong on some level to have a video game depicting a current hot war, where American soldiers are being killed.
Would we have accepted WWII video games during WWII if the player could have been an Axis soldier? We don’t think much about it today – it’s been 65 years.
But to families who have loved ones actually in harms way, I think it does matter.
