2010: Dems still blaming Bush, everyone else is moving on

posted at 2:24 pm on August 3, 2010 by

That’s the message buried in a polling memo from the New Democrats at Third Way:

Less than two years after leaving office, only 25% of Americans believe that if Republicans return to power in Congress their economic agenda will mean a return to former President Bush’s economic policies. 65% say that a Republican Congress will promote a “new economic agenda that is different from George W. Bush’s policies.” Even Democrats and liberals are unconvinced that a Republican Congress means a return to Bushanomics. And moderates and Independents, the key swing blocs in all major policy debates, have completely divorced congressional Republicans from the economic philosophy and failed policies of President Bush.

WaPo blogger Greg Sargent reports that “[t]his has some Dems worrying that the central Dem message has yet to sink in with voters,” but noting that the poll shows “if the public is persuaded that voting Republican would be a return to Bush policies, it has a dramatic impact on voter attitudes.”

Actually, the word needing emphasis in that sentence is if — the biggest two-letter word in the English language. The Third Way poll is broadly consistent with the new Rasmussen poll showing that voters now see Obama as equally to blame as Bush for the country’s current economic problems. Can key voter blocs be persuaded otherwise?

The Dem theory seems to be to try to re-tie the GOP to Bush by staging fights over the Bush tax cuts, and so on. But what if voter intent is not driven by their perception of Congressional GOP candidates? What if the reverse is true?

For example, in 1994, the Congressional GOP knew they were likely to win a majority before the end of July. Although we cannot know whether 2010 will have a 1994-sized wave, we can hypothesize that many indie/moderate voters have already looked at the current state of the economy — and the current state of the war in Afghanistan — and decided they don’t like what they see very much. And that the Democrats’ passage of unpopular legislation may have them yearning for gridlock, which does not even require a high opinion of the GOP. Perhaps they form an anti-Democrat voting intent from the basics, and their opinion about the Congressional GOP follows, rather than the other way around.

The Democrats’ message of “We May Be Incompetent, But They’re Crazy” may work in provable cases (and perhaps depress indie/moderate turnout) but not in general. Some voters seeking a divided government won’t care if the GOP candidate is “crazy,” “extreme,” etc. Others want to believe things can get better, and will convince themselves the GOP is a suitable alternative. That’s Hope and Change returning to bite the Donks in the rear.

The blame Bush and playing the race card is all the d’s have. I can not for the life of me understand why the r’s do not bring up the d’s have been in control of both houses for several years and at anytime they could pass any bill with or without a r. This bho, team, the d’s, and some rino’s have gotten the bills passed. This bho owns all this, from his taking office, NOT BUSH! If the r’s want to play nice with the d’s to get along, they will loose. I am at the point, get as nasty as the d’s!

Beside throwing out the National Socialist smear, that’s pretty much all she wrote.

They’ve got a 3 page play book – Scream Racism! Blame Booosh or accuse people on the right of being Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterparteis.

It’s really kind of pathetic, and in days gone by when they had a lock on the press, it worked.

But these days that’s different – people realize that it’s the left that judges people based more on the color of ones skin rather than the content on one’s character.

The also realize that responsibility comes with the job of leader ship – the Dems have controlled congress since 2007 and the lot since Obama took over in Jan 2009.

And they also can see which National party has the real Socialists.

Didn’t catch it in the preview.

Yes, that will work, tell people that Republicans cut taxes too much and that Democrats will responsibly raise taxes to “pay” for their idiot, counterproductive ideas.

Are Democrats trying to lose this fall?

Change I can believe in.

No. They are True Believers who think people will see raising taxes as fiscal responsibility, rather than a dagger in the heart of the economy.

I agree. Every time they suggest we’re “crazy” we need to laugh long and loud, then hit back and illustrate exactly why THEY are certifiably insane. To say nothing of shamelessly corrupt and unbelievably incompetent, too.

I’m still curious though, why do you always refer to Obama as “this bho”? Is it some reference I’m not getting or something? Just wondering.

When we take back Congress this fall the GOP damned well better be prepared to DO something quickly and efficiently to get things back on track. If not, the libbies are going to do what they did during the Clinton years and we’re going to face another four years of Obama.

I don’t think this country could survive another four years of this crap. Even with a republican majority I’m not convinced that he could be prevented from using executive orders to get what he wants done.

That said, even if the GOP gets lots done and has high approval with the people, I think Obama and his gang are counting on stuffing the ballot box with fraudulent votes, ensuring millions of votes from Mexican voters who are granted amnesty and the right to vote via Obama’s crafty plans.

This country stands on the brink. I just hope the American people can be bothered to pay attention long enough to prevent such things from coming to pass.

Cylor@10:33,
To answer your question. I do not capitalize any name of someone I do not respect. I have zero respect for that person now in the WH. I hope we never again have anyone close to this bho as President. He has done more damage to our Republic since elected than anyone since fdr, IMO. I hope this helps.

The man was a big government “compassionate” Republican. He got us “Iraqi Freedom” nation-building, a doubled national debt, and Medicare D, and bailouts.

I’d be willing to campaign against that.

Was talking to a some libs the other days and they think (seriously) that our economy will be killed if taxes go down.

It’s not even an option to these people on the far left.
Their grasp of economics is not even at a fundamental level.

Bush will be responsible FOREVER with those people. Dementia.
If Palin (or any R) wins in ’12, and the economy recovers, who do you think they’ll give the credit to?
Small, small minds.
