Whistling Past the JournoList Graveyard

posted at 12:42 am on July 21, 2010 by

Leftist writers and pundits have been trying to stroll past the crater left by the Daily Caller’s JournoList bombshell, hands stuffed in their pockets and eyes rigidly forward.  Over at the Caller, Jim Treacher provides a roundup of reaction from across the blogosphere (look for a familiar name!)  He includes a few gems from liberals, including David Corn of Mother Jones asking, “And this is the best they can do?”

Taylor Marsh grins through the flop-sweat to assure us conspiracy to defraud the dwindling audience of the dinosaur media, and slander innocent people as racists, is no big deal when “avowed and openly progressive reporters” do it.  I guess we’re supposed to take it as a given that all progressives are liars and smear artists, so we’ve got no right to complain when they’re caught lying and smearing people.  Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly, progressives gotta try throwing a white sheet over Fred Barnes to save Obama from a scandal that should have finished off his campaign.

The symphony of whistles from the Left as they try to creep past the JournoList graveyard is deafening.  It’s not going to work, comrades.  This scandal is going to draw blood.  Here are a few reasons why the wounds won’t be closing any time soon:

There’s more to come. Tucker Carlson has donned the bloodstained, skull-and-crossbones bow tie of battle.  He promises more red meat from the JournoList archives.  Anyone who has studied the tao of Breitbart knows the first revelations are not the worst.  The way to turn the Left’s control of media against itself is to save the really devastating material for later, and release it on a timetable that keeps the story sizzling.  The Blatant Beast is defeated by feeding it a story it cannot help repeating.  The dark cloud forming over the absurd defenses deployed by liberal reporters today is the shadow of incoming rounds from the second volley.

This story will hook independents. The Daily Caller has treated conservatives to the unique sensation of being shocked by revelations that don’t surprise us a bit.  We’ve known this stuff was going on for years.  The Reverend Wright story is one of many examples where media bias is easily detected by simply reversing the political alignment of the principles, and asking what the media coverage would be like.

It doesn’t take much effort to imagine the reaction to the discovery of John McCain’s twenty-year association with a chapter of the Klan, followed by a major speech in which McCain described the Kleagle as “an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy,” whom he could “no more disown than he could disown the white community.”  If that wasn’t enough to fill newsrooms with stroke victims, the craven decision to throw the Kleagle under the bus a few days later, after one more outrageous statement, would have done the trick.

For independents who don’t follow politics closely, the JournoList scandal provides a simple, blatantly obvious narrative about fraud and propaganda.  A sizable segment of the “journalist” population stands revealed as sputtering extremists, who talk about killing stories and destroying people’s lives to protect their favored political candidate.  Yes, these people are self-professed liberals – they’re not pretending to be “objective” reporters or news anchors – but the cross-pollination between “liberal” and “objective” journalists is a blindingly obvious matter of public knowledge, and the things they’re talking about doing are vile, underhanded, and conspiratorial.

The general public will be able to digest this story, and they won’t like the taste.  They’ve already got a low opinion of journalists.  It will plummet even further once they get a few bites of JournoList.  No magazine, newspaper, or network that continues to employ any of the people quoted in the Daily Callerstory can be trusted by any fair-minded person as a reliable news source.  Period.

The discussion of false racism charges is an outrage. The American public is growing very tired of being pummeled with the racism club.  The cynical plan to pick a random conservative – “who cares?” – and slander them as racists will mix with disgust at the NAACP for trying the same wretched tactic on the Tea Party movement.  The once-feared Race Card is looking rather tattered around the edges.  The Left has been putting a lot of effort into shuffling those cards into the deck for the 2010 and 2012 campaigns.  The nitwits at JournoList just made them much more difficult to play.

The public is looking for ways to forget it voted for Obama. A narrative of fraud and deception is building around the 2008 election, as the polls for this disastrous presidency plummet.  People who don’t want to admit they voted for Obama have an appetite for believing they were tricked into doing so.  Laying blame at the feet of a media they increasingly distrust will be very attractive.

A rational, informed electorate wouldn’t have allowed Obama to survive the Reverend Wright scandal.  A great deal of media manipulation was necessary to slip him past such obstacles, and into the White House.  It will be somewhat comforting to think it was all an expensive prank by the JournoList frat boys.

I don’t think it’s healthy, or desirable, for the public to let itself off the hook so easily.  America must fully understand the Obama mistake to ensure it is never repeated.  However, I can see why people would prefer to embrace a simpler explanation.  There will be a real hunger to find one in the material released by the Daily Caller.  That’s one of the big reasons this story isn’t going away any time soon.  It has the coarse texture and rotting smell of the very last straw for the unhappy consumers of the mainstream media, and the angry marks of the Obama swindle.

I can’t wait for the revelations about JournoList coordination on Sarah Palin attacks.

As frustrating as the 2008 election it’s more confounding than anything. How the **** did America let this happen? Was it really a bunch of media frauds who conned this nation or is this nation full of useful idiots who were only too eager to drink the Kool-Aid?

If the Republicans had not let the voters down so much they may well not have and when McCain refused to make a big deal out of it, then many voters probably decided it was no big deal.

As Geraldine Ferraro pointed out, the only reason he was where he was in the campaign was because he was black. Too many people averted their eyes to the obvious, and still it would take a heart of stone to have watched the inauguration without the feeling our nation had crossed a racial threshold we yearned for for decades, and to see people openly weeping at his achievement. How disappointing that this milestone was handed to a simple, average, crass Chicago corruptocrat. The mask slips a little further every day.

The best this episode has to offer is that a rush to judgement, as many of these “racist” episodes usually offer, is not usually a good thing.
I suggest the Sherrod get in line behind Ray Donovan who is still trying to get his good name back.

Today you come for Fox News, tomorrow we come for CNN and MSDNC libtards.

This scandal also exposes what a steaming cesspool of incestuous corruption the Washington Post has become – which has transformed itself from a more or less reliable liberal opinion rag to an overt propaganda arm and attack dog for the Democrat Party.

Good Lt on July 21, 2010 at 11:40 AM

Now you understand why the Corruptocrats, their allies and their propaganda wing the MSM are so desperate to shut down Fox News, Talk radio and blogs. Now you will also understand why they nominated the fascist Kagan for the Supreme Court and the executive order stating that the President can shut down the internet for “security reasons”.

All fascist totalitarian regimes need to control the information the public receives in order to control them. Take a look at every totalitarian regime throughout history and you will find that one of the very first things they do is shut down any media outlet that isn’t goosestepping along with them and then make “laws” that make it a criminal offense to say anything bad about the regime or its leaders.

We will, in the end, discover that so many of the things that fall under the “where there is smoke there is fire” column that the Corruptocrats and their MSM propaganda wing have been so desperately trying to make anyone who believes there is a fire into a “nutjob” or worse and to tell the rest of us that there is “nothing to see here-move along” are true. A fine example of this is the whole question about whether or not Obama is a citizen of this country and eligible to be president. This one would be so easy to resolve by just producing his records, instead of doing that the Corruptocrats and Obama have spent millions in legal fees and court costs shutting down all inquiries and the very first thing Obama did after the inauguration was to issue an executive order sealing those records. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

i think the tao of brietbart probably tells us to space things out a little…timing you know

we have the sherrod thing, then the dc first episode yesterday, and now the fnc stuff today

all these are complex stories….there is much to be learned from each about the depravity of the left…

the list reminds me much of the climategate emails….non-professional people being revealed for what they are…hacks with a mission

Wow, the msm has shown itself to be slightly less honorable or believable than the worst used car salesman or telemarketer. What a bunch of wannabe Goebbels and pseudo-intellectual low lifes, we have as a “check” for dishonest politicians. What a sad statement this makes for schools of journalism and education in general.
Let’s see how much of this actually gets to the people and what, if anything, it accomplishes.
Can we now start referring to the msm as the Propaganda Ministry?

paratisi on July 21, 2010 at 2:04 PM

I said some time ago that the people who voted for Obama would be looking for scapegoats. It is much easier to blame liars for lying than it is to accept responsibility for permitting the liars to deceive. Everything anyone needed to know about Obama to see the arc of his political trajectory was available, despite the efforts of the liars to conceal the truth. Unfortunately for the country, too many voters failed to inform themselves, drinking the Kool-Aid because it was easier than doing their duty as voters.

Now that they know they were deceived, they won’t be blaming themselves. The liars will be the focus of their wrath, deservedly for their lies. But they will also get much of the portion of wrath that the deceived should be directing at themselves.

When do they admit that sort of thing?

Clearly most of them are biased to the Left, but they will never admit to it.

Back in 2005, my local lefty rag published a notice that it would be joining with other regional New York papers to put forth an agenda – their agenda. And that is precisely what they have done for 5 years. During the election, I asked where the articles on the ACORN scandal were and what I got in return was an editor trying to convince me that Sarah Palin tried to ban books, then they published an article written by Wade Rathke himself. I asked if banning speech was so important to him what did he think of the OIC trying to ban blasphemy against Islam. He didn’t even know what the OIC was. They ran an article about how the local NAACP had lost its charter due to lack of interest and voila, suddenly, white liberals join and they magically get their charter back. A few weeks ago, they ran articles blasting the town of Jackson for passing a law stating that English is the official language. Then they ran a poll. 80% of respondants agreed with Jackson’s action. The editors didn’t like those results, so they hunted up people in other towns who brought up vaque accusations of racism and fear, and wrote another article. The arrogance of the leftist media is astounding and they can’t be allowed to get away with it any longer.

Connie on July 21, 2010 at 5:20 PM

I was watching the press tear into Palin with my Dad during the 2008 campaign and I said “this (what the press is doing) is not good”. I told him the American people are going to find out who this guy is and then they are going to go looking for the people who didn’t warn them or tell them about his guy. I said the press will be in the inevitable position of defending Obama as he does unpopular things or abandoning their leftist foxhole and saving their credibility. Now that I see it playing out I am convinved more than I was before they are going down with the Obama ship before they will start to give him the Bush treatment. This may doom them in credibility for the current generation and beyond. I don’t just mean us conservatives we are the ones feeling betrayed right now as the article points out.

I hope some of those journolisters read this Doc and get a clue about honesty. One thing is true that none of them should be writing for a “professional publication”.

Tucker Carlson has donned the bloodstained, skull-and-crossbones bow tie of battle.

That’s so hilariously wonderful.

I hope independents that are wondering what the hell they were thinking in ’08 are seeking out information and find this story. Yes, it’s all over the rightosphere & a bit on FOX, but it’s no where in the LSM.

Anyone proven to have defrauded the American public to influence the election of a president should be dealt with in a manner to inhibit lies and deceptions for political gains. Never happen because it would be dismantling the entire MSM. Publish the list.

Brilliant as usual Dr Zero.
Two words now dictate their actions however. Fear and frustration. They are fearful (terrified even) of the devastating body blows delivered daily by a conservative media ( Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, Conservatives Blogs, etc..) just barely in it’s infancy but are already inflicting so much pain on their beloved media outlets ( NBC, CBS, CNN etc. ) that they shudder at what the future might hold.
They are frustrated that after decades of almost total control of arguable the three most influential messaging avenues in America, the media, academia and Hollywood, they are still only able to convince a paltry 12%, 15% tops to sign on to their liberal/socialist agenda.
Conservatives must keep up the pressure. Eventually they will have no other choice but to admit who they truly are. Liberals and socialists.
