“Kill Switch” Bill Quietly Makes Its Way to Senate floor

The "kill switch" bill would give Obama power to shut down the Internet. He may not have succeeded in slowing the rise of the oceans or providing jobs for the jobless. But if Congress passes the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, which quietly arrived on the floor of the Senate late last week, Barack Obama will have the power to shut down the Internet for at least four months without Congressional oversight.

Nicknamed the “kill switch” bill, the legislation would give the federal government the power to close down networks and block incoming Internet traffic from certain countries under a declared national emergency. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), the bill’s primary sponsor, told CNN that the bill is modeled on a law already on the books in China, which gives the government authority to “disconnect parts of its Internet in case of war.” Lieberman added, “[W]e need to have that here too.”

In an earlier incarnation, the bill gave the president unlimited control over the Internet “kill switch,” but the legislation was amended in the face of criticism and now requires that the president seek congressional approval to extend emergency measures beyond 120 days. Even so, the bill imbues the with president absolute authority to shut down the Internet without oversight for a period of no less than four months.

The Center for Democracy and Technology, a citizen watchdog group, has raised concerns that the legislation could be used to stifle free speech. The concern is not as large a leap as some on the left have contended. This is an administration that has already used the Internet as personal propaganda tool and had the effrontery to ask private citizens during the year-long health care reform debate to “report phony claims” about the legislation back to the government.

Obama has also tipped his hand in his hirings, which include Mark Lloyd, a self-professed admirer of dictator Hugo Chavez, to the newly formed position of Chief Diversity Officer at the Federal Communications Commission. In addition, the FTC under Obama recently proposed a “Drudge Tax,” which would require that independent media organizations to pay fees that would be used to fund mainstream newspapers, thereby “leveling the opinion playing field.” Obvious power grabs like these have been proposed in the name of cybersecurity, when in reality they are little more than thinly veiled efforts to control thought. Is Obama the sort of person you want at your computer’s power switch?

All the more reason not to adopt it here!

But China is a communist country where people live in tyranny. It’s the ideal model country for the Obama admin.

Yes, but one would think Lieberman was a little smarter than this.

A kill switch doesn’t end a distributed attack from a zombie botnet. It puts the attack in abeyance until the point at which the switch has to be turned back on.

It is best to work with the owners of the network to find and disable the “zombies.”When Joe Endluser’s browser window pops up with, “Hey, we disabled your access because we detected malware,” he will call the ISP, and you can find which of the tons of malware on the computer the botnet is using. This fixes the problem without stomping on anyone’s rights (your ISP’s terms of service very likely include the company’s right to block you when they detect “unauthorizd software.”

Isn’t this just wonderful? A four month ‘kill switch’ is about the time for the Nov. elections! Is there a new ‘crisis’ about to happen to see this happens? We sure would not want to shut the internet down before an election now would we?

Get ready for the “National Security Emergency” that’s going to take place roughly 3 months before the 2012 election.
The Dear Leader and Chairman, BaRope-A-Dope Oil-Bow-Mao, can get the internet back on just in time for his victory celebration after his buddies at acorn and the black panthers assure his victory by making sure that republican voter fraud was nipped in the bud.

There is lots of precedent for that in the Congress.

The Gun Control Act of 1968 is a copy of the NAZI gun control laws (except for the part about air guns). Chris Dodd’s father had the Library of Congress translate the German law so that the Congress could adopt it. JPFO has a nice book. http://www.jpfo.org

Then there was the whole NAZI intelligence section that was adopted by the CIA. I suspect that there are many others, but knowing about them would only depress you.

Hmm…. whats the first thing a tin-pot dictator does when he wants to shut down the opposition?

But we can trust Obama and his merry band of incompetent National Socialists, right?

And besides, we have the lame stream media to keep us informed, so we should be all set…

One thing we ought to keep in mind is that it’s convenience that keeps us dependent on the internet system we use, not limiting physics. As inconvenient as it would be, there’s no one on the planet who could get up a “samizdat internet” faster than a bunch of Yanks. There are just too many ways to move data now.

I intend to get a femtocell (personal cell phone tower) as soon as I can. The problem is that right now I can buy a femtocell OR a decent firearm, but not both. Decisions, decisions.
