you wouldn't be the type of person that would be small enough to suggest that the authorization for inspection of Iranian shipping in the latest UN Resolution was "luck", would you?

The iranians might be anticipating a blockade and/or inspection of their outbound shipping.

McBaine -- Thanks; I agree. Until there's some signal that Big Blue is ramping up, I won't regard other clues as definitive. (We'd need more than two carriers for an actual attack on Iran as well. Three, minimum.) The F-22 is, as you say, the platform to watch. The global bombers can do the job from where they are, as long as they can "lilypad."

We'd hit the AD sites with Tomahawks in coordination with the F-22s, but any prior beefing up of the TLAM inventory is likely to be invisible to the public.

Really the biggest signal for an impending attack on Iran by the US is the deployment of a squadron or two of F-22 Raptors. They're the only ones that can easily handle any of Iran's SAMS including the S-300. They haven't been deployed to the middle east as yet, the closest they've gotten is to the Asia Pacific theater for exercises with Japan and South Korea.

If I were the commanding air general I would basically set it up in a way that the F-22 would kick in and take out any threatening radar/SAM sites and air threats. In addition to that B-2's moving in for the first hard targets. Following up on that would be 4 gen aircraft from carriers and air bases. This would also include B-1s and B-52s.

B-2s remember are being modified to carry 2 of the new MOP (Massive Ordinance Perpetrator) bombs. The B-2's would likely fly straight from Whiteman AFB and then use Diego Garcia or Guam as a layover spot for crew change like they have done in the past.
