Comedy Central is run by terrified cowards

posted at 10:47 am on April 22, 2010 by

Last week, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone revisited the controversy of Muhammed being an untouchable religious figure in the media. Years ago, they aired an episode called “Super Best Friends“, which starred religious figures like Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tzu, Moses, and yes, Muhammed. They drew him as he’s been historically depicted. He talked. He had the powers of fire for some reason. No riots. No censorship. Comedy Central apparently had no qualms with it.

muhammed1

Then, a few years later, came the episode “Cartoon Wars“. Combined with rather apt mockery of Family Guy, they spoofed the Western fear of depicting Muhammed in the wake of the Jyllands-Posten cartoon riots. Just to remind people, this is what caused the riots.

muhammad2

The big climax of the episode was going to be that Family Guy would insert Muhammed into a single one of their disjointed, senseless scenes. No actual jokes about Islam or Muhammed would be made, but his mere appearance drove the country into a panic, fearing violence from Muslims.

muhammad3

To punctuate the message of the episode, at the end, Al Qaeda supposedly got their revenge by showing a horrifically cheesy anti-Jesus cartoon, basically showing Jesus defecating on people, and them defecating on him. The moral? You can insult Jesus all you like, but don’t you dare even show a picture of the prophet of Islam. The mere showing of Muhammed proved too controversial for the cowardly punks at Comedy Central, however, and at the last minute, they forced the censoring of the image of Muhammed.

muhammed4

That sniveling bunch of media pansies ended up providing quite an ironic twist to Parker and Stone’s satire. Well, the duo wasn’t finished. For their 200th episode, they decided to revisit the controversy. Knowing they couldn’t even show Muhammed, they built around the idea of first putting him in a Ryder truck, and then transferring him to a bear mascot outfit.

muhammed5

I won’t give away too much of the plot in order to avoid spoiling the episode, but it turned out to be a two-parter, just like the Cartoon Wars episodes. I’m currently watching the second part…and guess what?

Comedy Central forced the bleeping of every use of the name “Muhammed”.

Despite last week’s episode using it numerous times. Despite having shown him in a previous episode. Despite being made to look like fools when they censored Muhammed last time. They bleep every mention of Muhammed’s name. It’s ludicrous trying to watch the episode. They say his name over and over, until the dialogue sounds like Morse Code. Don’t worry, though. Comedy Central still had no problem with Buddha snorting coke or Jesus looking at porn in the same episode.

We have reached Irony Overload.

There are lots of cracks about the phrase “the terrorists have won”. Well, this is one of the clearest, truest signs that they have. It’s utterly abominable, and everyone responsible for this craven, pusillanimous decision is a worthless coward.

Side note: Recently, I linked a picture as a joke in response to another poster joking with me. It was a picture of Jesus Christ giving the finger. I was told by the administration of Hot Air not to link it again, because people were offended. Totally unrelated.

Did Comedy Central really force the bleeping, or was the bleeping deliberately added as part of the satire?

(I don’t know, but I could see that as an explanation.)

But Christian bashing is just fine with them …

who watches this crap anyway.

It was a picture of Jesus Christ giving the finger. I was told by the administration of Hot Air not to link it again, because people were offended.

That’s offensive? I’m not sure how that picture would be faith-shaking exactly and the bomb-prophet picture above has been reposted several times, I imagine the same offended folks never asked for that to be banned. I realize the argument is suppression of ideas through threat of violence, but lesser double standards on religious imagry aren’t going to help get that point across.

This is Hot Air’s decision though, not mine. It’s not a freedom of speech issue because it’s a private blog, so I’m just stating my opinion (which hopefully wont draw too many flames.)

On topic however, I can only agree with your take MadisonConservative, Comedy Central are a bunch or cowards in this.

MadCon, I recall a poster here about a year ago that got warned/post deleted treatment for linking to a very similar JC pic. Since that was before the Salem takeover, I’d have to say HA is being consistent.

No, it wasn’t me and no I wasn’t offended by either pic. Soon, we Ameriweenies can join the Euroweenies and Canadaweenies in happy PC bliss.

I’m neither claiming that the South Park ordeal is a free speech issue, nor that my side note is a free speech issue. Both are privately owned companies with their own rules, which they have the freedom to set.

MadisonConservative on April 22, 2010 at 12:02 PM

I know, I was just commenting on it and backing up my argument with that understanding, as I assumed that would be brought up in a following post. I wasn’t intending to claim that the Comedy Central issue was a free speech issue either.

Comedy Central forced the bleeping. If you go to southparkstudios.com and try to watch the episode, it’s down with a message from the creators that they can’t stream it online because Comedy Central bleeped it after it was delivered, and refuses to allow the unedited version on the website.

It was Comedy Central. I can’t believe their BS double standard and cowardliness, but I’ll keep watching South Park.

As to the picture you linked, I think it’s a shame, but at least Hot Air isn’t doing this because anyone threatened violence, and I assume they’d feel the same if you’d linked a picture of Mohammed flipping the bird.

Esthier on April 22, 2010 at 1:02 PM

They bleeped out the name, too??! The entire network is based on comedic irreverence…everyone can find something to be offended by there. Quite telling…

I was told by the administration of Hot Air not to link it again, because people were offended

I also agree with Esthier here. I laugh at representations of Christ in the first place. The bible clearly says that Jesus was probably unattractive, certainly no Jim Caviezel *hotJesusconflict* *cough* So, I’m rarely offended by pictures of any type. Kind of irrelevant.

Diane on April 22, 2010 at 2:02 PM

I just watched it, and they did much worse than that. They bleeped nearly the entire end, the part where one of the kids says, “You know, I learned something today.” And then Jesus added something on top of that, which was also bleeped, followed by Santa adding something else that was bleeped.

The entire thing.

I didn’t realize the Bible described Jesus as unattractive though, but I agree with you on Jim Caveizel.

At least, but it’s a cold comfort and rather hypocritical. I want to know who made this call.

It was the wrong way to proceed.

TheUnrepentantGeek on April 22, 2010 at 2:18 PM

Esthier on April 22, 2010 at 2:18 PM

I believe the bleeping at the end was intentional. Just seemed like a comedic device. The rest of the bleeping was CC’s doing.

It was prophetic…Isaiah 53:

He grew up like a young plant and like a root out of the dry ground; he had no form or comeliness that we should look upon him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by all, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief, and as one from whom men hide their faces, he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”

I believe Luther or Calvin did a good exposition on it, tying gospel accounts to it.

Yeahhhh…uncomfortable watching The Passion and feeling attracted to…God. Or something.

I’m terrible.

There is no right not to be offended. In fact I’d say there is a right to be offended, but that doesn’t mean the offender has to modify his behavior to suit the one offended.

(Still, HA is a private company and can do what it wants.)

rbj on April 22, 2010 at 3:39 PM

I’m neither claiming that the South Park ordeal is a free speech issue, nor that my side note is a free speech issue.

The reason you were asked not to link it is because you were doing it to annoy other commenters — with no other purpose. You weren’t using it for political satire, to make a point; you weren’t being threatened with death, in which case we’d all be obliged to support you. You were simply being antagonistic.

No, I wasn’t. It was a joke directed towards one commenter, and one commenter alone. That same commenter responded that he laughed at it.

MadisonConservative on April 22, 2010 at 3:46 PM

The post in question. Directed at a single commenter, in response to his joke.

MadisonConservative on April 22, 2010 at 3:49 PM

No, I wasn’t. It was a joke directed towards one commenter, and one commenter alone. That same commenter responded that he laughed at it.

You weren’t banned; your comment wasn’t even removed; and yet you persist in making yourself some sort of free-speech martyr to the forces of intolerance at Hot Air management, notwithstanding the fact that I routinely write posts about atheism challenging things like National Prayer Day. The very first week of this site’s existence, I wrote a post about a student newspaper in Oregon running a drawing of Christ with an erection. I deliberately reposted the drawing myself so that people could see it, whether they were offended or not. And yet, here I am, implicitly compared to the turds who threatened Trey Parker and Matt Stone in your post. Simply, simply wonderful.

Allahpundit on April 22, 2010 at 3:52 PM

Oh, almost forgot: In addition to you not being banned and your comment not being removed, you enjoy Greenroom privileges where you get to post stuff like this and take nasty cheap shots at me and Ed. CENSORSHIP!

Allahpundit on April 22, 2010 at 3:55 PM

Allahpundit on April 22, 2010 at 3:52 PM

If there was any implicit comparison, it would be to the people who censored Comedy Central, not to the jihadists who threatened them. That’s a serious difference. In addition, as you have a reputation for not censoring people, I was pointing it out as an isolated example, and therefore out of character for the site. That’s now two flawed assumptions you’ve made about my intentions in writing something.

MadisonConservative on April 22, 2010 at 3:56 PM

Allahpundit on April 22, 2010 at 3:55 PM

I didn’t name anyone specifically because I didn’t know who made the decision, so I wasn’t taking any cheap shots at anyone. I also never cried censorship.

MadisonConservative on April 22, 2010 at 3:58 PM

Except you weren’t censored. The comment wasn’t removed, notwithstanding the complaints. I simply asked you to please refrain from stuff that might gratuitously offend other commenters. If you’re making a point and need to link an image like that, that’s something else entirely.

Allahpundit on April 22, 2010 at 3:59 PM

Thank you for the clarification. The notification I received didn’t indicate that.

MadisonConservative on April 22, 2010 at 4:01 PM

I agree that Comedy Central is guilty of epic (you might say “comedic”) hypocrisy.

However, if the goal is equal-opportunity blasphemy — satirical or not — you can count me out.

I stopped watching South Park because of the blasphemous treatment of Christ.

I didn’t write any angry letters, and I certainly didn’t threaten anybody with violence. I just stopped watching.

Yeah, especially considering what they did to him.

The episode Madison mentions definitely crosses some lines there. I’ll be one of first to admit that a lot of contemporary Christian songs are horrible and are no different from taking a love song and changing the “babies” to “Jesus” but that’s less true when the love song in question goes sexual.

I certainly assume as much. Though I did once attend a summer program in high school where another student shared her poem about the orgasm Mary might have had when she conceived Jesus. Of course she was an atheist who was really trying more to offend through what she considered a deep thought experiment, but we were all young and much more ignorant than we thought we were.

I’m personally boycotting Viacom, and if I want to watch Southpark, it’ll be on a non-viacom website.

V-rod on April 23, 2010 at 4:23 AM

The difference between the Jesus/finger thing and depicting Muhammed is that the Jesus/finger thing was (I’m quite sure) a business decision — to avoid losing readers who would peacefully take their blog-reading-business elsewhere — while the Muhammed decision was caving in to threats of violence. How many devout Muslims watch Southpark? I would guess about the same number as devout Christians, i.e. approximately none. If they lost all of them as viewers, they couldn’t care less. The problem is not that they wouldn’t offend Muslims; it was that they enforced upon themselves a double-standard.

Unlike Southpark, this is a venue where the clientèle expects a certain degree of civility and good manners. I’m glad that it is, and so I’m glad they don’t wish to gratuitously offend. As such, I’ll consider Hot Air to be similarly tainted when it DOES show Moses, Buddha and Muhammed giving the finger.
