“Outing Myself” or “We Now Interrupt This Broadcast”
posted at 2:17 am on February 25, 2010 by Sarjex
Hey guys,
I feel like I need to poke my head out from my drafting table and out myself a little bit.
Hi, I’m Sarjex and among many things about me, I’m a conservative, I’m female, I grew up in Utah, I now live in San Francisco (which drives me crazy but there’s more work for me here,) I like John Williams (Superman is my favorite soundtrack), Stephen Sondheim (Into the Woods) I love American history, I love drawing, I love cartoons…oh yeah, and I’m gay.
It’s been big fun reading the hilarious comments regarding the “Gay Air” revamp cartoon and was reading them out loud to TLG (The Liberal Girlfriend.) She good naturedly tolerates my wingnuttiness…I tolerate her never hanging up her coat.
I think gays DO have it great in the US. When I hear all the “social justice” queers talking about how hard it is to live in Texas or other places and the US is sooo oppressive I like to snort to them, “Try Iran!” I do not understand why so many gays gravitate so completely to the left when all through history it has been the left who has hung them, stoned them, rounded them up and gassed them except that for a long time the Right on this country made them feel so unwelcome.
The times, they are a changin.’
I knew I was a conservative before I knew I was gay. I come from a family of entrepreneurial rugged individuals and I was *never* one for groupthink. Socialism or anything akin to it always horrified me because I knew it empowered the group over the individual…and the individual could always be ME.
I’ve seen some scorn and some doubt from some regulars at Hot Air about whether or not gays CAN be conservative and if homosexuality is real and/or gays are a bunch of sex crazed sodomites with no business in proper society and that Thomas Jefferson really didn’t mean GAYS when he penned that all men are created equal and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were god given rights.
TLG has been dubious at times with my involvement in Hot Air (I’m a regular chatizen during the Ed Morrissey show) once accusing me of basically lying to my friends during the show. She told me they wouldn’t be nearly so accepting if everybody there knew I was gay. Some did, some didn’t, but the day I went off to City Hall to marry her, I made sure everybody knew it…and without exception, everybody wished me well and Ed played “I’m Getting Married in the Mornin’.” I saved the chat and made her read it.
I think there is some serious legitimate debate from both sides ahead over the issues of gay marriage, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and a host of other social issues…but for me, my issues are…and have always been… individual liberty, a restrained government in line with what the framers intended with the constitution, low taxes and national defense. I think I’m not “the only gay in the village” with those views.
So now that I’ve officially outed myself, I’m going to duck down behind my drafting table and get back to work. There’s an Andrew Breitbart cartoon that’s been floating around in the back of my head.

Ok – enough waiting. and I am sure everyone wants to know the answer to this question: What’s TLG thinking about this post and the Vast Rightwing Conspiracy response?

its all good.

I agree with this part.

Dear Sarjax:
You sound like a really nice girl. I never heard of you before and I really don’t care about your sexual habits. Seriously, I am glad you are a conservative; that we share the same ideology about limited government and other conservative ideals is great!
I am sure that you never heard about me either. I will spare you my sex preferences.

Sarjex*
I am sorry.
carbon_footprint on February 26, 2010 at 5:32 PM
I think it’s great you outed yourself, and I think more people should. It reminds me of that line from MILK when he was telling his group of friends to come out to their friends and family because people are less likely to hate if they know someone who is gay. (something like that…)
It’s always the extremists in any group that get the bad rap. but, most people realize that people are people.
Honestly I think you would have an easier time coming out to Conservatives as gay than you would coming out as a Conservative to Liberals. ;O) hehe
sarainitaly on February 26, 2010 at 5:32 PM
My family, kids included are closeted conservatives in an ultra-liberal area. We smile and nod a lot, (and yes the teachers to death)but the lefty hatred is so intense we’d never come out. Someday, we’ll move to Idaho.
JiangxiDad on February 26, 2010 at 5:33 PM
Good for you, Sarjex. Loved that cartoon the other day. Keep up the good work.
JammieWearingFool on February 26, 2010 at 5:33 PM
Thanks for sharing Sarjex!
We need your help in spreading the word everyone needs to join the fight in protecting life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I feel your pain. I live in the People Republic of Portland Oregon. I say screw ‘em. I have an old beater car I drive during election season, because the conservative bumper stickers I have on it make it a target for the liberal hoards in downtown Portland. My wife refuses to ride in it, because “tolerant” bunch here in Portland think nothing of spitting on your car, flipping you off, or even kicking the car WHILE YOU ARE IN IT!!
portlandon on February 26, 2010 at 5:42 PM
I like to imagine the “Superman” theme playing every time I walk into a room, and “The Imperial March” playing every time I leave. It keeps me brimming with unwarranted confidence!
Well spoken, Sarjex, and great job on that web site cartoon! Add me to the list of those curious about what TLG thinks of all this…
Doctor Zero on February 26, 2010 at 5:43 PM
Sarjex, I just want you to know that from a religious right-wingnut, some would say the far right…
It doesn’t matter to me how you see yourself or what your lifestyle consists of. My best friend is a gay male. While we often have discussions about his friends and my friends and his lifestyle, I love him for who he is. And if I met you in person I’d probably love you for who you are.
In the Bible it has some things to say about homosexuality, as it does more about money and even more about overeating and hating your neighbor. What I do know is we are instructed not to judge, and that mercy triumphs over justice.
I believe that God is a just and loving God. He knows best how to give love and mercy. I’ll just try to follow in his footsteps.
Godspeed. And if we don’t interact again, have a fantastic life!
Tennman on February 26, 2010 at 5:44 PM
For me, Conservatism has always been about minority rights. The smallest minority anywhere is the individual. If we protect individual liberties, everything else will fall into place. If you are not infringing upon my rights, pursue happiness all you want.
trubble on February 26, 2010 at 5:46 PM
I think Cozmo asked the relevant question – are you outing yourself here at HA being gay, or living in San Francisco and being conservative? Here for teh gay you will get mostly a shrug; there for teh con there you will be socially ostracized and professionally ignored / grey-listed.
motionview on February 26, 2010 at 5:47 PM
Sarjex -
First time reading something by you – and think its a great piece – for a variety of reasons.
First – I do care you are gay. As in you are proud of what you are and that matters. To say “I dont care if your gay or not” is BS. Gay, straight, bi, trans, whatever is part of a persons makeup.
Second – this piece alone (and your SF church experience) lets us know – it does matter. I am a pro choice, pro gay marriage conservative. And couldnt give 2 chits what people think that means or what I “qualify” as. I hate to be labeled – its akin to the socialist groupthink you mentioned.
Third – religion, religion, religion. My what a hodepodge of “enlightenment” people so desperately need to hold on to. Its like a bad “if then” syllagism.
Lastly –
Grew up in NY, lived in Atlanta for 6 years – so its true – get a little life exposure and its amazing what your brain starts thinking. 2 great friends of mine are mid 40 gay guys, from Mobile and Memphis – and are ardent conservatives. They laugh when people are shocked !!! they are gay conservative males. Hell, we even disagree about gay marriage. (they are opposed, I am for)
But what we do – is respect each others lifestyles, opinions and character – while joking or seriously discussing things. We trust each others property when away – know each others families and even have mentioned – the dymanic alone makes everything interesting.
Kudos to you for being you.
BTW – best line of your post…
Odie1941 on February 26, 2010 at 5:48 PM
First two ALBUMS (hope that doesn’t say how old I am) were Beach Boys – Endless Summer, and Star Wars. Love them both to death.
If everyone spent more time on what we have in common, rather then the differences, we’d really be a force to be reckoned with.
As a proud, Lutheran, fiscally conservative, socially tolerant, small government, personal responsibility, live and let live kinda guy, I welcome your honesty, and shining a bit of light on your life.
Keith_Indy on February 26, 2010 at 5:49 PM
I’m a conservative male, straight, faithful Christian, white…. Basically everything MSNBC would have you to believe of Republicans (Although I’m in my early 20′s). I completely disagree with your lifestyle.
BUT!
Like the saying goes, “I’d defend to the death your right to live it.” What you do with your life is completely your call so long as it doesn’t interfere with mine. But that goes for anyone, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Heh, forgot to say that I’m a Texan too, you know, the oppressor and such. Oh, and I thought the “GayAir” mock up was HILARIOUS. It’d be a pretty awesome April-Fools joke to deck the site up in that garb.
Dopavash on February 26, 2010 at 5:51 PM
Thanks for the post. I hope your TLG will grow to like us now that we can prove that your sparkling ideology and good will are all that is required by most of us. Those with opposing ideology have to settle for tolerance.
Cindy Munford on February 26, 2010 at 5:51 PM
Welcome aboard. You’re gay, I’m bald, and the captain is grampy. All have to do with genes.
Much more important is trying to understand human nature and the world and acting in prudent, loving, and responsible ways.
As a conservative, you obviously understand human nature. And since you live with a liberal, you’ve got to be a very, very kind and loving person. So kudos to you.
Dr. Charles G. Waugh on February 26, 2010 at 5:52 PM
Glad you wrote this, (GLAD, get it? haha) I don’t care if anyone is gay so long as they are patriots, honest and hard working and pretty much keep what they choose to do sexually behind closed doors. Same with straight, bi, shoe, and orca-lovers.
coondawg on February 26, 2010 at 5:54 PM
Brava on your article Sarjex!
Great cartoon on teh gay Hot Air. On TEMS we were still giving you major kudos and laughing ourselves off with your cartoon.
cubachi on February 26, 2010 at 5:56 PM
OK, now it’s personal. You go, girl!
I’ve traded ideas and jibes with you in chat on TEMS and I liked you then, and I like you now. I’m all for you grabbing all the liberty (and gusto) that life extends to you (whether society is reluctant to grant it or not).
I can even readily grant the idea of civil union to you – can you make a persuasive argument why I should grant ‘marriage’ as a sacred institution sanctioned by God – something that I and a lot of others have some pretty strong beliefs in?
We’ve extended ourselves a lot (and I admit I’ve gotten over some prejudices) to extend a lot over the past 20 years. Can you at least agree to leave ‘marriage’ for straight couples?
I really want to hear discussion on this…
Kindest Regards,
Ron Robinson

Uhhm. PC check: Is it o.k. for gay people to use the word “queer”?
Anyways, I’m a big believer on the content of character, not their skin color, religion, or sexual orientation. It’s what’s inside that counts. I don’t think that being gay and being conservative are mutually exclusive. We have gay conservatives, atheist conservatives, religious conservatives, beta-male conservatives, alpha-male conservatives. The whole point is we believe in essentially the same things.
Honestly, Sarjex, I can’t blame you. Women are awesome.
Rightwingguy on February 26, 2010 at 6:01 PM
As long as you are down with lower taxes, less gubmint and a damn strong national defense, I don’t care who or what you love. Whatever gets you through the night, life’s short and it’s cold out there.
DrW on February 26, 2010 at 6:01 PM
Sarjex, I meant to ask earlier, on your spoof Hot Air design – what does the rainbow target T-shirt say?
And will you be releasing a line of rainbow con T-shirts?? I feel sure there is a market.
Rosmerta on February 26, 2010 at 6:02 PM
Oh, Daveth.
Rightwingguy on February 26, 2010 at 6:04 PM
Hey Sarjex. Great piece.
I wanted to offer my support and belated congratulations on the nuptials. I must have not made it to TEMS that day. You’re awesome, so keep it up
Sorax on February 26, 2010 at 6:05 PM
I was just going to write as long as you are for fiscal responsibility, limited government and the free market… but you beat me to it and said it better. Funny stuff, Sarjex.
Fallon on February 26, 2010 at 6:07 PM
Doc, please don’t take this the wrong way, but why do you say this? If we can agree that the vast majority of homosexual men don’t propigate, or at least not as often as straight men, wouldn’t the gene for homosexuality eventually dwindle out of the gene pool? Is there any evidence that the number or gay gene’s in the human gene pool is any smaller today than in times past. Has anyone identified this gay gene?
Sorry, but I’ll have to side with nurture over nature on that one.
DrW on February 26, 2010 at 6:11 PM

Rigggghhtt, just admit you are Sarjex’s mother.
Just kidding. Love the similarity in names.
carbon_footprint on February 26, 2010 at 6:19 PM
Hi Sarjex — you posted this in a thread a couple of nights ago, and I said then what I say now:
That’s all I need to know about you. You are a fellow freedom fighter.
John the Libertarian on February 26, 2010 at 6:19 PM
Sarjex… We Christians are becoming an acceptable target but you seem to not be in that vein. The 3 main things I want are:
1) to not have my rights as a parent trampled. I want to teach my kids what my moral values are. When they become adults they can further refine them.
2) I want my freedom of religion and freedom to worship to remain intact. This is worth fighting and dying for.
3) I would like it understood that my position is one not of hate but of love. I’m a believer and as such I want what God wants and that is for all to prosper and none to perish. If the Bible states homosexuality is a sin and further states the wages of sin is death then why would I encourage something I think will destroy your salvation?
I understand you don’t agree, that’s your right… but that is what I do and I won’t budge on that.
Now I didn’t even know HA had a cartoonist ( if that is the correct term) I did see the one re the headlines but since I didn’t buy into the HA is going gay thing I looked at it but didn’t participate inthe comments. I don’t participate in a lot of the posts but I read them all. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for yours because thevtwo I’ve seen are good. Now i’ll go hunt down your other submissions in the Green Room.
CCRWM on February 26, 2010 at 6:22 PM
How have I missed your cartoons?! They are hilarious!
I have heard this almost exact same story from at least 3 gay friends.
On my SmartGirlNation radio show (at RFCradio.com) I asked Jimmy at GOProud the kind of feedback he got a CPAC. He said it was almost 100% positive.
We conservatives want freedom for people to live their lives they way they wish. There are religious differences, sure. But even in our religious beliefs we believe that a person’s choices in life is theirs alone. Many don’t want to change the definition of marriage, but all want civil unions for the fairness of it. But in the end, that is just one issue. Your comment about Iran is right on. It is conservatives that would fight to the finish the kind of leaders that hang gays in the public square. The left just wants to dialogue with them. Which side is safer for gays?
Good luck to you! Your work is amazing.

HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE THE SUPERMAN THEME!?!
It gives me goose bumbs (nah, goose tumors!) everytime I hear it.
I was 1st chair trumpet in the high school band and we played that theme one year. Getting to blast that song out was a damned good feeling. I still pity the had-to-be-near-deaf-by-the-end-of-the-song clarinet player who sat in front of me though…
Meric1837 on February 26, 2010 at 6:36 PM
Don’t know how you can stand living in San Francisco. I lived in Oakland for 15 years and it nearly drove me to madness.
As for relationships, I think I’d prefer celibacy to TLG.
Been there, done that.
The Ugly American on February 26, 2010 at 6:38 PM
Thanks for speaking out, Sarjex. I support gay marriage and repeal of DADT, and hope someday more conservatives will “come out” in support of both. For now, the issues you listed in that quote are issues all conservatives can, and should, agree on, and should be the focus of a unified conservative political agenda.
vermillionsky on February 26, 2010 at 6:40 PM
Yep. Let some conservative Christian act a little horrified if she or he discovers a close friend is gay and the names of bigotry and ignorance fly like bullets at all Christians. Let homosexual mobs form around Christians just silently walking the streets of some homosexual community and the silence of gay conservatives is deafening.
The finger pointing of bigotry at “christian conservatives” gets really old.
It reminds me of how the left ignores their own crimes but stops the presses the moment someone like Sarah Palin is caught reading from her palm during a speech.
There’s plenty of ignorance and bigotry going around. Most of it comes from the libs. Not from the right.

I don’t care what you do in your love life, Sarjex. It’s between you, your loved ones, and your maker (if you believe you have one). I lived in S.F. for a while too and I’ve had more than a few gay friends. I’m fervently opposed to gay marriage as a conservative, but I can still respect you as a person, an American, and as an illustrator.

spmat on February 26, 2010 at 6:56 PM
There are more closeted gay conservatives in San Francisco than you may think. I myself am out as an unabashedly conservative gay. In my circle of friends, and when out and about town, I will gladly discuss and argue politics with anyone who gives me half a chance. Although folks may think of us in stereotypical terms, it’s not the case. We are you. And politics are high on the list of topics at any bar or BBQ. Sometimes even more-so than Levi’s Johnson.
It’s been my experience that most in the community have not been rigorously exposed to conservative ideas. They think liberal by default as if it were some warm blanket of acceptance, without giving it much thought. I tell you, Radical Faeries have much more in common with conservative views than they do with the Obama wing, and it’s fun to make them admit it.
I’ve got several of my friends to consider and vote for conservative views, and one long-time gay friend just moved to New Hampshire to be part of the Free State Project. (and he’s not a Paulite, although he did escape communist Czech at age 17. Go figure).
I love trying to ‘convert’ my peers here in SF. Rarely am I met with any derision, unless I’m talking to someone without a KOS-like agenda. Funny thing is, these types are typically fresh off the bus from Iowa-ish or NY-ish, and this City is full of em. (What pisses me off, as a native, is they vote communist in our City and then end up moving to Portland. Idiots)
Welcome to San Francisco. It’s not your fathers town and the Revolution WILL be televised.
And Sarjex ROCKS!
