I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass!

The way it’s spelled in “The Silmarillion” ie, the story of Tolkien’s “first age”, when Sauron was just Morgoth’s errand boy, was “Balrog”. They used flaming swords and whips, and were shadowlike in appearance, man shaped, and “disguised” themselves in fire.
It does not say anything about them being huge in size. In rank, they were above elves, but below the “Valar” (Morgoth was a “Vala”, Sauron and what became the Balrogs were “Maiar”, or lieutenants of the Valar.
Morgoth was the guy who started all the trouble in Middle Earth, and he was taken down at the end of the first age. Sauron hid for a while and then became public enemy #1….
TMI , I know.
I’ll put the hobbit costume away now, lol…..
I haven’t seen it
Great post, and I pray the communists are foiled in their attempt to take over health care, but I wonder what happens if Nelson folds, and I expect he will.
Why, I can’t understand. You’d think he’d go public with Rahm’s threats, and really deal a blow to this crooked white house.
OH yeah in the first age, when Morgoth and the Elves were at war, there were legions of Balrogs, but most of them died in the war that ended the first age, leaving, I guess, the one that 6,000 years later Gandalf fought on the bridge of Moria. Implied that some few others survived also, but remaining hidden.
Same for dragons, they were many in the first age and few in later times, so goes the story.
I’m a Tolkien geek, what can I say…
The Balrogs and Dragons (see “the Hobbitt”) were the primary antagonists of the elves in the first age, as the orcs were easily defeated…..
“Moria. You fear to go into those mines, don’t you? The dwarves dug too greedily & too deep. You know what they awoke in the caverns of Khazadum…Shadow & Flame.”
“Let the ringbearer decide. Frodo?”
“We will go through the mines.”
Who is our Frodo? McConnell? Lieberman? Ben Nelson?
I do have to adapt a classic bit from a Milwaukee radio institution to go along with that – “Go back Demon Placebo, back from whence you came. Leave the good people of America alone.”
Well, one thing’s for sure – we know who Saruman is:
Suddenly another voice spoke, low and melodious, its very sound an enchantment. Those who listened unwarily to that voice could seldom report the words that they heard; and if they did, they wondered, for little power remained in them. Mostly they remembered only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said seemed wide and reasonable, and desire awoke in them by swift agreement to seem wise themselves. When others spoke they seemed harsh and uncouth by contrast; and if they gainsaid the voice, anger was kindled in the hearts of those under the spell….
Blowback

Note that in order to stop the Balrog, Gandalf the Grey destroyed the bridge and plummeted to his death before being reborn as Gandalf the White.
Think we can get the GOP to be reborn as a party of conservative principle instead of opportunistic power grabs?

Here’s a good song for that. Stand My Ground by Within Temptation

What’s a “Balroc”? (A roc in the service of Baal?) I mean, doesn’t everyone’s spellchecker include Westron?

Oh man. BALROG. I’m all embarrassed now! How many nerd credit points did I lose for that one?

It’s Balrog with a ‘g’, I think.

I actually thought you purposely did that b/c the ending sounds like “ck”… as in Barack Hussein Obama.

So when the bill falls into the abyss and takes the GOP with it who does that leave to take over the quest?
No wonder the hobbits were crying on the hillside.
