Adam Lambert, bravely promoting “artistic expression”

Just almost lost my breakfast after watching about a minute of Adam Lambert from last night’s American Music Awards. Didn’t watch the rest, but here’s a description:

Rolling Stone didn’t label Lambert the Wild Idol for nothing, and Glambert definitely delivered on his promise of a “sexy” performance as he closed the live show with simulated oral sex from a male backup dancer, a brief make-out session with his male keyboardist and a giant mirrored prop so the audience could see the looks on their own shocked faces. Rolling Stone has learned that producers weren’t informed about the guy-on-guy kiss in advance, and after the show, Lambert told RS the musician he kissed is a straight man.

Lambert also told RS that if ABC decides to cut any parts of his performance for the West Coast rebroadcast, it would amount to “discrimination.”

Yep, this was broadcast on ABC. How nice for the kiddies, who didn’t even have to stay up past their bedtimes to watch this primetime culture-fest/civics lesson which aired at 8 pm ET.

Please don’t hate Lambert because he’s an exhibitionist; he sees himself as a courageous fighter for freedom:

We’re in 2009; it’s time to take risks, be a little more brave, time to open people’s eyes and if it offends them, then maybe I’m not for them. My goal was not to piss people off, it was to promote freedom of expression and artistic freedom.”

I’m wondering whether the FCC will agree. Or will they find it obscene?

Obscene material is not protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution and cannot be broadcast at any time. The Supreme Court has established that, to be obscene, material must meet a three-pronged test:

  • An average person, applying contemporary community standards, must find that the material, as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest;
  • The material must depict or describe, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable law; and
  • The material, taken as a whole, must lack serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.

Or perhaps it was merely indecent or profane. See the FCC site for definitions and how to file a complaint.

Those philistines at ABC did in fact choose to cut some of this from the West Coast broadcast:

UPDATE: Reports about the West Coast broadcast of the American Music Awards indicate that ABC kept the kiss with Lambert’s keyboardist, but cut away from the simulated oral sex with his male backup dancer.

Hat tip to Michelle Malkin who didn’t care for the performance, either:

It sounded like kittens being boiled in hot oil while a kindergarten class pounded on ’80s synthesizers and a Rock Band drum set.Egad, this is desperation draped in glitter drenched in liquid eyeliner smothered in hairspray and cinched with a spiked collar . . .

C’mon, Michelle, don’t be shy; tell us what you really think.

hmm…now Im wondering if ABC will be charged a fine like the fine levied over Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction”….which was no way on this type level.

Now I did hear Janet kept grabbing her crotch last night, like her brother Michael was famous for. Im not watching this, but I hope this guy’s fans are equally disgusted. Im disgusted just hearing about it. This is no way any type entertainment to me.

Way to debunk the stereotype that gay man are sex addicts who can’t keep it in their pants. What a great day for the gay movement. I think that performance will now convince all Americans that gay people should have the right to get married. Winner.

My wife and I watched his performance, and frankly looked like something out of Rocky Horror Picture show.

What was Adam thinking? I think this was Adams big middle finger shoved into the face of the Moral Majority that didn’t vote for him for the winner of American Idol.

This is why I don’t watch award shows anymore (except for country music). It seems to be a platform for desperate celebrities to be ‘edgy’ and ‘controversial’ so that they can milk another 15 mins of fame. MTV Video Awards are the worst for trying to shock people, but the AMAs aren’t far off.

Heh.

Loser. Sore.

Poor Adam. Desperate for something beyond just tolerance…

What about Madonna? Jackson? Aguilera? Beyonce? Timberlake? Eminem? Hilton? … and a long list of so-called “performers” who did “simulated sex” in their stage performances or videos?

If our disgust of the performance is because of the “gay” thing, I think Lambert has the right to call it “discrimination”.

My take: Simulated sex in a “popular show” is pornographic, straight or gay. These “idiotic” artists should know better.

Concur.

Going further, pushing limits, sooner or later nothing is limited, everything is permitted, and then .. what?

Typical leftie: sweetens the proclamation of his own great courage with some emotional blackmail.

Who is really surprised?

we’ve seen so many, many women (along with some male) performers objectify themselves on stage in hyper-sexualized performances. Heck, little underaged Miley Cyrus pole danced for us this summer, for goodness’ sake. His homosexuality shouldn’t be the primary reason we are outraged.

What I am most angered about is…how utterly AWFUL that live show is. His voice is atrocious there…what happened?!?

For me the outrage is the venue: network tv, primetime.
