The Capital Times: Madison’s lying, lying newspaper…

Imagine my surprise when I saw this headline:

Man pulls rifle from trench coat, gets cited for carrying concealed weapon

You see that, right? You see those words? Make your inference from them, because that’s what “Your Progressive Voice”, the Capital Times, used as a headline for a story. I guess they didn’t expect people to actually, you know, read it:

A Madison man was cited for disorderly conduct and carrying a concealed weapon early Friday morning after he allegedly pulled a rifle out from his coat while chasing after a man who apparently took a bar stool from a tavern.

AHA! The magic word: allegedly. Odd how they didn’t use that word in their headline, which clearly implies that some guy was carrying a rifle under his coat, and was charged with carrying a concealed weapon as a result, right?

“Officers entered and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint,” said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. “He had a paintball gun inside his coat, but the gun had no markings on it that indicated it wasn’t real.”

Wait…what? Since when is a paintball gun a rifle? I’m confused. What? There’s more?

Thurner also allegedly had a knife in his possession, which resulted in the concealed weapon citation.

So…so…ouch. My head. So he didn’t have a rifle, nor did a rifle have anything to do with his concealed weapon charge.

Somewhere, Jayson Blair is beaming with pride.

Blowback

Reading the Times is your first mistake. I turn down the free State Journal at the grocery store each Sunday so I don’t help their circulation numbers.

Caught the front page story on the stimulus, and they somehow managed not to question the authenticity of the numbers at all. Weird.

I have friends and family in Madison. The most reliable newspaper in town, by far, is The Onion.

I grew up in Wisconsin – this doesn’t surprise me. My husband and I now live in Michigan. Although Michigan is a Democratic @$*&hole, at least you can carry a weapon. It’s just a major pain taking weapons thru Illinois to Wisconsin when we visit my family for the holidays.

You have nothing to complain about. I have the Austin (TX) America-Statesman. You’d never know about the NEA propaganda scandal, or the Mao-loving White House people. A columnist used an abviously satiric statement from Rush Limbaugh (”We need segregated buses!”) along with fake quotes, re-checked her sources, and still stood by the “segregated buses” quote that was taken out of context. There’s a cartoonist who blames the Republicans for everything in every single cartoon. Yeah, your Madison Capital Times got nothin’ on the Austin American-Statesman!

Rifled paint-pellet guns? What will they think of next!

Wasn’t a real what?

Paintball guns do not look like real guns in any way shape
