Russia simulates nuclear attack on Poland

Russia has provoked outrage in Poland by simulating an air and sea attack on the country during military exercises.
The armed forces are said to have carried out “war games” in which nuclear missiles were fired and troops practised an amphibious landing on the country’s coast.
Documents obtained by Wprost, one of Poland’s leading news magazines, said the exercise was carried out in conjunction with soldiers from Belarus.
Could someone please explain to me why Russia would simulate such an attack, if it has no plans whatsoever of attacking Poland? As far as I can tell, the only other possible explanation is that Moscow wants Warsaw to fear it. Putin strongly believes Russia should rediscover itself as a major power. You cannot be a major power if you don’t control your own backyard.
Poland has drifted towards the West in recent years; a development the Kremlin cannot appreciate. So what to do when you’re Medvedev or Putin? You just threaten your neighbor. “Continue traveling down that path and you’ll face the consequences.”
The good news? Bush saw Putin’s soul and concluded that all was well. The bad news? Bush isn’t exactly known for his ability to read people.

The Reset Button, when pushed, apparently launches a large array of Soviet offensive weaponry.
I think your targeting computer is mis-aimed, given that these games did not occur on Bush’s watch, and had they occurred, would have gotten a far stronger response than they apparently did get. Bush shouldn’t be in the recticle — there are far more threatening targets.

The United States is in decline – why shouldn’t the Russian autocrat seek to enhance his power while he can?
Either the US will come to its senses and he only has 3 years left, or the US will choose to give up superpower status and the time will be ripe for someone else to step up…

There was no Reset button. It was an Overcharge button.
