Bombing the north was quite effective. Carpet bombing, rolling artillery barrages, chemically destroying agricultural land, and indiscriminately killing civilians when NVA and VC were present turned the locals in the South against us.

That approach will work in western Pakistan as well.

I strongly suggest you read “Imperial Grunts” by Robert Kaplan – especially the chapters on Afghanistan and the Philippines.

And yes, since it seems to matter to you, Kaplan was a soldier. And has spent his entire career reporting on soldiers.

Of course, counterinsurgency war is a different cat to skin entirely. Rolling barrages of artillery fire that would work against a field full of enemy tanks or fortifications are counterproductive against an enemy that mingles among the civilians; the enemies that survive can crawl from the rubble
