Kerry Against Afghan Surge But May Be For It

posted at 3:52 pm on October 26, 2009 by

Obama has a massive foreign policy problem. It’s called John Kerry. Kerry has been running his own foreign policy mission in Afghanistan, lecturing the locals, and now is back home lecturing the locals.

Kerry has come out against the troop surge requested by General Stanley McChrystal before Obama has made his decision (at least as far as we know):

“I am convinced from my conversations with Gen. Stanley McChrystal that he understands the necessity of conducting a smart counterinsurgency in a limited geographic area,” Kerry said in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations. “But I believe his current plan reaches too far, too fast.”

Kerry is undermining a foreign policy formulation which is of critical importance, much as he tried unsuccessfully to undermine the surge in Iraq.

Obama will find no political support from Kerry in the long run, however, because Kerry is preserving his option of flip-flopping later on:

The Massachusetts Democrat said that, despite his concerns, he may eventually support a troop surge.

I want Obama to succeed in Afghanistan, although the delays and dithering of the past months gives me concern that Obama will not make a decisive decision. A Kerryesque half-measure wih caveats and escape hatches is not what we need.

I hope Obama does not follow Kerry’s two-sided approach of doing just enough to say he was for a surge, but leaving himself wiggle room to say he was against it (or vice versa).

I’m going to respectfully disagree with your assessment. I do believe that Kerry is making these statements on behalf of Obama. Just more trial balloons from an Administration who’s afraid to ruffle the feathers of their base.

Kerry’s an idiot, as is anyone who seriously listens to anything he has to say.

Why in the name of good sense does one human being with one function brain cell give a flying flit what kerry has to say? He did a bang up job in VN, didn’t HE? The wife sees he has ‘what he needs’. Is he trying to get hc job when she gets fed up? This bho seems to have no use for hc. She seems to be a non-person in bho and team, IMO. I have no use for this kerry.

Well, I for one agree with Kerry, except when I disagree with Kerry. After all, he took some hero medals in ‘Nam, then threw them away, sorta, but not exactly, as he’ll remind us. So to say that he’s flip-flopping is sorta true, but not exactly.

Kerry is fronting for The Obama, and is trying to drum up public support for abandoning Afghanistan. Republicans are reluctant to openly voice vigorous support for an effort that would be easy to subvert with administrative misdirection. That vigorous public support would tar the republicans as war mongers, and smear them with the failure.

Obama is waiting for a consensus without which he has no way to lead. Since there is no consensus, Obama will do nothing, until one develops.

Whats interesting is that when Kerry got back, he got face time with Obama…

or… in other words…

He’s had as much fact time with the Precedent as the General in charge of that war has had.

I don’t give much credibilitiy to anything John F. Kerry has to say. All I can think of asking him is “why the long face John”.

That’s a plan…let’s delay making a commitment until the enemy is stronger and controls more territory. Only then will we commit fewer troops than the general running the effort says we need to successfully execute the plan. Oo-oo! I have an idea, we could then issue a solemn statement saying we stand firmly behind the national government but we’ll be pulling out our troops. Don’t worry since we promise to keep providing necessary military supplies to the national army to win the war. Of course, Congress just might change its mind and cut off aid at a future date cuz the Dems don’t like the cut of Kharzi’s jib or somethin’.

Yep! John Kerry’s the right man to be providing advice on war fighting.

OT – saw a clip from Kerry in 2004 excoriating Bush for failing to have enough seasonal flu shots available. Kerry said something about Bush willfully neglecting the safety of Americans by helping flu vaccine companies profit. Wonder if he’ll be dusting off those comments since Obama’s plan has only 10% of the needed vaccine ready now, and the rest won’t be available until January – long after this early striking pandemic has peaked…
