Eugene Robinson asks: “Why, oh why, do conservatives hate America so?”

He bases this rather toxic assumption on the widespread disbelief and derision which followed the announcement that the Nobel Peace Prize committee had selected Barack Obama as this year’s winner.

Could we just get real here for a minute?

Which America-hating “addlebrained Obama-rejectionists” are you talking about? Your colleague Ruth Marcus, who wrote: “This is ridiculous — embarrassing, even”? Or another colleague, Richard Cohen, who initially reacted to the news with flabbergasted satire? (He has managed to suspend his disbelief in today’s column.) Or perhaps you’re referring to those right-wing extremists at Saturday Night Live?

Can we not stipulate that this was an extraordinary choice that struck many, many commentators as over-the-top, peculiar, or at least in need of explanation?

Accusing Obama’s conservative critics of “hating America” is malicious disingenuousness along the lines of pretending to misunderstand Rush Limbaugh’s “I want Obama to fail.” Can you really not make the distinction between hoping that a leader’s dangerous policies will fail, for they will harm your country, and wanting your country to fail? I’m sure you can. Think back: did you cheer on Bush’s policies or did you do what you could to oppose them?

If you’ve argued that Obama has done something that has merited the award I missed it.

And I think you’re behind the curve if you really believe this:

The Nobel Peace Prize, irrespective of the idiosyncratic process that selects its winner, is universally recognized as a stamp of the world’s approval.

That’s absurd, unless by “world” you mean all those opposed to American interests.

Pundette: I read Robinson’s ravings this morning (some mornings he raves more than others), and I suppose he considers the liberal reactions to GWB as non-America hating.

Dear Mr. Robinson,

Oh no. Obama is not America. Objecting to Obama is not in any way objecting to America.
When a President’s policies will ultimately lead to the destruction of this nation that I love, I must oppose those policies.
Is hoping Obama fails the same as hoping American fails? Not if Obama’s policies will lead the the destruction of this great nation. A patriot recognizes that American cannot win if Obama succeeds.

Only a few months ago the left was saying the highest form of patriotism was criticism. Now that we have a darling of the left in the White House it is suddenly unpatriotic to say anything negative about “the one” even if it is accurate.

Conservatives love America and want to preserve it. Liberals have historically blamed America first. They hate what America is and can’t wait to destroy and remake it.

American was the land of opportunity. A land where one could work hard and reap the rewards of that labor. Obama would redistribute those rewards to those who did not earn it. When the poor man hears that the government is going to force the rich man to share, the poor man backs off and relaxes. He thinks, “now I will not have to work so hard.” The rich man also backs off and asks; “Why should I break by but just so the government can take what I earn away and give it to somebody else?” Everyone works less, produces less and we all have less. It is theft, foolish and very tempting to the left.

Liberalism is unAmerican and unconstitutional.
This is why libs talk about a “living constitution”, which means that they can ignore the parts they don’t like.

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” = you can’t own a gun.
“Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof” = You can’t pray in school
“…or abridging the freedom of speech, = hate speech laws
or of the press = the fairness doctrine (translation: Liberals can talk but conservatives cannot)

Your definition of a “Living Constitution” is my definition of a dead document. You ignor the parts you don’t like rendering them null and void.

Pardon me but your hypocrisy is showing…

Meh, suffice to say I came away understanding that the author is a bigot with a printing press. Pundette does us justice keeping the unsightly underbelly of the left in our faces.
