Socialism: A Hate Story

posted at 5:35 pm on October 6, 2009 by

Ann Althouse was one of the few people who bothered to drag herself to see Michael Moore’s latest exercise in agitprop, Capitalism: A Love Story. Her reaction to the film is interesting. Describing a sign she saw in the lobby, she says:

“Dump ¢apitali$m/Join the Socialists.” And, indeed, the movie was a big promotion of socialism. Capitalism is “evil” — Capitalism is a “sin” — we were told over and over. And if only all the downtrodden masses would see this truth and join together we could have socialism.

Here is how she describes two of Moore’s typically dishonest examples of sinful capitalism:

There were some teenagers in Wilkes Barre, PA who had suffered a terrible abuse of their due process rights, and the fact that a for-profit detention institution was involved didn’t transform what was a criminal scheme into a broader indictment of our economic system.

And there were the life insurance policies that companies take out on their [low level] employees. Maybe these shouldn’t be permitted — and calling them “Dead Peasant” policies was kind of outrageous — but if they are wrong, we can make legislation banning them. We have plenty of regulation in this country that keeps us away from a completely free market, and we can procure that legislation if that’s what we want. I was disgusted by the camera trained on the face of a boy who cried over the death of his young mother. The real villain there was asthma. It said nothing significant about capitalism, which made it grotesque exploitation to use that boy in the movie.

Moore’s method involves finding people who are unhappy with their circumstances, lying about the particulars of the cases to make them illustrate his points better, and converting them into wholesale indictments of the free market, and America in general. Althouse captures the overall flavor of Moore’s work with this observation:

Moore shamelessly and repeatedly advocated the violent overthrow of the economic system. It was somewhat humorously or moderately presented — such as through the mouth of a cranky old man who was being evicted from his home — but it came across that Moore wants a revolution. He kept advising the workers — and the evictees — of the world to unite and shake off their chains.

Socialist and fascist agitators have always relied upon the support of the disaffected. No system of government, from the most rigid collective state to the most energetic free-market democracy, can ever achieve a completely satisfied population. There are people who don’t do well in a capitalist system. Some of these people suffer from bad choices – freedom cannot exist without the possibility for error. Some suffer reversals of fortune through no fault of their own. Prosperity requires risk, which carries the possibility of loss. Some people will be wronged by criminal enterprises, large or small. No system of laws is invulnerable, and even the most dedicated law enforcement personnel are not infallible.

The irony is that no system of government is more brutally unfair to the disaffected than the kind of total State that Michael Moore lusts after. A central State has more power to rob its citizens, waste their resources, cause devastating economic fluctuations, and cause physical injury than any private corporation. The State is far more difficult to change, and more likely to persist in its mistakes. It is utterly inescapable, to a degree that Microsoft and Wal-Mart can only envy.

One of the most persistent and dangerous illusions of socialism is the belief that money becomes magically virtuous when government handles it. Politicians are at least as greedy as any captain of industry. The installation of a politburo does not eliminate ambition from a society – it changes the means used to fulfill those ambitions. The political class achieves its desires through force, by definition. Unlike commerce, force produces no side benefits for the larger population – the politician and his constituents get what they want, at the expense of everyone else.

The people Moore caricatures as cold-hearted fat cats don’t go away under a socialist government – what a silly, childish notion! The million-dollar marketplace of high-level transactions still exists, but now the most important commodity is political power. You can already see this happening all around us, as the transition to a command economy has radically accelerated under Obama, after puttering along in a lower gear for decades. What high-rolling mega-corporate CEO doesn’t love the idea that his company is “too big to fail,” and thus insulated from market forces by a shield of taxpayer money?

Political influence is one of the smartest investments those “fat cats” can make, which is why the immense Obama government became so fabulously corrupt so quickly. When you slide billions of dollars across the landscape, you can’t be surprised to see a crowd of ruthless people chasing it. Those people won’t go away when you complete the transition to complete socialism – they’ll just become Party elders and commissars. They’re not terribly inconvenienced by having to wear Party jewelry, and learn a few new songs. Their children might have already been taught the lyrics in school.

What about the little guy? Doesn’t he benefit under benign socialist control? Of course not. He never has, anywhere on Earth, during the many times collective governments have gained power. The common man might realize some short-term gains when the socialist government marches into power – wow, free health care! It never lasts. It can’t. Socialist control destroys the very mechanisms of prosperity it needs to pay off on its promises. The capitalist incentives for hard work and risk-taking are replaced by the collectivist impulse to do the least that is required of you, and accept whatever benefits you are given. People are, in the main, rational actors. They respond to incentives. There are always exceptions – people who answer a religious calling, or give 100% effort under any circumstances, due to their inner drive. Those people are never numerous enough to produce prosperity for a nation of millions.

Socialists despise competition – they find virtue in the idea that everyone deserves everything, and benevolent leaders have a responsibility to provide it. Competition doesn’t disappear under socialist control – that’s another childish fantasy. Instead, socialism replaces competition between individuals with competition between groups. The former is energetic and constructive, while the latter is bitter, and almost inevitably violent. In a total State, the individual has no way to improve his situation, no way to build a better life on his own. Instead, he must join a collective – a group large and powerful enough to influence the government, which dispenses all benefits. You can see this sort of thing all around you today, since our government is already titanic, and has confiscated much wealth to spread. It will get much, much worse if we’re ever foolish enough to slip all the way into Michael Moore’s idea of a total State.

The architects of the State can have all the good intentions in the world – they can be paragons of selfless virtue – and it doesn’t change a thing. The nature of the system they create will inevitably corrupt it, because the nature of the people trapped in the system doesn’t change. They want more for themselves and their families, and if they can’t earn it, they will band together to demand it. There is only one reliable way to hold those bands together over the long term, only one predictable response to the diminishing returns gained by each sacrifice of liberty… and only one emotion the leaders of each collective entity can easily encourage, to maintain their own power: hatred.

When everything you have is provided by the State, you will easily come to hate anyone whose demands take priority over yours. They are not your competitors. They are your enemies. Even now, in what may prove to be the last days we can regard ourselves as a free nation with a bloated government, we can see how much anger simmers among those who believe the urgency of their demands outweighs any consideration of the cost to others. You may recall an attempt by ObamaCare supporters to launch a viral meme last month, with a Facebook and Twitter message that said something like “No one should have to die because they can’t afford health insurnce.” A slogan like that does not allow for argument, or even picky questions. You either support socialized medicine, or you want people who can’t afford health insurance to die. What attitude is appropriate, when confronting people who want those who can’t afford health insurance to die?

Capitalism is indeed a love story, born from the enduring respect of free men for the maturity and liberty of their fellow citizens. It is better to be poor in a capitalist society, than middle-class in any of the miserable “worker’s paradises” that litter the world. Free people working together, and in competition, generate the prosperity that stands as the only medicine against poverty. Children and pets might be loved without respect, but not adults. The alternative to respect and love is clearly visible in the ugly hypocrisy of a bitter millionaire, who charges the dwindling number of suckers foolish enough to take him seriously for the privilege of being told a dark fairy tale, which requires them to become slaves before they can live happily ever after. Listen to the desperation and anger growing in the air around you, and ask yourself if Michael Moore’s hate story is likely to end well for anyone who isn’t already rich, powerful, and ruthless.

Socialist and fascist agitators have always relied upon the support of the disaffected.

So, which one are the tea-partyiers?

The real reason pesudo-intellectual drivel like this can’t be taken seriously is that it can’t see the difference between Stalinist Russia and Sarkozy-ist France. It fails to admit that dozens of nations have flourishing democracies and fine economies and haven’t unleashed the comissars and the dictators. In fact, every couple of years, the free people of these nations come together and eleect governments that will preserve their state.

And, finally, the idea that industrial titans have become socialist comissars under the Obama Administration (‘s continuation of Bush policies) blithely ignores that idea that these folks have been using money and influence to gain behind-the-scenes power for many years. If anything, recent events have made them subject to more scrutiny (though, sadly, it appears that this scrutiny will not be enough to bring real change).

In short, a shallow, juvenile rant.

“Dozens,” BB? I presume you’re talking about Europe because “flourishing democracies and fine economies” elsewhere are using capitalism. Even the Chi Coms are using a version of it. In any case, how did these “dozens” of countries generate and accumulate the wealth they have? Give up? It was through hundreds of years of capitalism (in many cases, exploitive capitalism–which the good Doctor addressed–with regard to their colonies). They’ve been full blast socialists only a fraction of that time (60 years or so?) and you don’t have to be a genius to know the gravy train, as vast as it is for them, is not going to last forever on their current path.

“Hundreds” of years? You mean they were free market capiutalists even before Adam Smith? And, maybe my history skills are weak, but I seem to remember a couple of wars and a Depression that pretty much drained off Europe’s wealth last century.

Pointing out the Chinese as excellent capitalists, by the way, is pretty ironic in that their form of capitalism is pretty how Michael Moore sees America — brutal exploitation of an ignorant peasant class by well-connected party hacks who have the political clout ot make money in cahoots with a Chinese government that dumps product and keeps its currency artificially low.

The larger point, however, is that this is not and “either-or” situation. Devastated European economies (and Japan) came roaring out of the War inot a period of unprecedented growth using a mixed model (as we do). And, it turns out, that socialized medicine not only doesn’t mean that bureaucrats kick down your doors and give you spare rooms to poor people, it can mean a system that is arguably better and cheaper than lours.

Presenting a manichean scenario involving enlightened capitalists in a free market system vs. jack-booted Maoists is juvenile and factually wrong.

Bleedsbrains conveniently leaves out the fact that “Sarkozy’s France” has endemic structural economic & racial problems stemming from dirigisme. Like other European welfare states, they import Magrebians to act as slave labor to prop up their unsustainable systems and then act shocked when the youths burn cars. In my youth, it was a proud boast of Sweden that they didn’t have any slum areas, a claim that they can no longer make.

Socialist interference in the everyday lives of Europeans provides a disincentive to have children, which in turn triggers the problem of replacing the ratepayers who are tasked with the onerous burden of actually supporting the system. Foreign workers are imported to take up the slack, but because the economic interference causes poor to no job growth, they are usually left unemployed and stigmatized in the kinds of socialist worker architecture high-rise ghettos
we rightly dynamited years ago. They are thus reduced to an alien lumpenproletariat blamed for something they had absolutely no hand in causing. It is no wonder that they are tempted to burn cars and riot!

Socialism , a rape-rape.

the_nile on October 7, 2009 at 8:32 AM

“Socialism , a rape-rape.”

Let a Nobel Prizewinner explain it for you:

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “The Wages of Sin is Death.”

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

1. Terrific. Historically, most of those states have unemployment rates which look as miserable as ours does now under Obama.

2. Japan’s economy revived largely because of the Korean War. As for Europe’s recovery, some of it had to do with the Marshall Plan, some with free trade, reduced tariffs, de-regulation, the abolition of price-fixing and government control of production, and other free-market policies. Their economic recovery was not the result of Socialism (or Communism).

Moreover, these countries have depended on us to protect them (which we do by providing both military force and our prosperity). While they may think it’s great to weaken the eeevil U.S. the end result would be disastrous to us and them.

Here’s the deal on Michael Moore. His movies are not made for American audiences. He caricatures America for snobby leftists around the globe, who lap up his cartoons like nerds at a Marvel Comics convention. That is his schtick and it’s made him very rich. I figured this out last week while visiting Canada and his film “Sicko” was on tv. It was so laughably ham handed that I couldn’t help snickering during the “serious” parts, which appalled my Canuck hosts no end. They take the fool Moore very seriously up in those parts because he reinforces their silly stereotypes about America and makes them feel superior. That’s what he’s selling.

Capitalism is indeed a love story, born from the enduring respect of free men for the maturity and liberty of their fellow citizens.

And it is the one and only economic model that truly reflects and works for the God-given natural yearning in every human being to be free.

That our founders recognized this idea and designed an entire system around it, a system that has since produced the highest standard of living for the most people ever, remains the most remarkable achievement for mankind over the millenia.

And that today we on the verge of tearing asunder this achievement, perhaps for all time, will haunt us for the rest of our days.

Once Moore’s beloved Socialism became the American way, does he think he’d be making films? The new regime would want intellectual film makers who would expound on the beauty of the system, not physically challenged high school graduates.

How soon, John Holdren, would we begin to have physical standards by which our population would be judged?

His form of propaganda speaks to the fading hippie ideologies that inform many of the films fans. When the socialists took over, I think Mr. Moore would fade into obscurity and one of the tenement flats next door to poor Winston Smith.

Perhaps “Bleeds Blue” would like to explain to us how the wonderful “social democracies” of Europe would have fared if they had been made to foot their own defense bills since WWII and had not relied on America to keep the communist wolf from their doors. How much spare money would they have had to redistribute as social welfare? A non-snarky, non-sarcastic answer would be great, thanks.

The truth is this. The social democracies of Europe had their strongest economic growth in the period between the end of WWII and the 70′s. During this time, they enjoyed far more economic freedom and far freer markets than they do now. In the late 60′s and 70′s, the left decided that the fruits of this economic growth were there to pick like berries off a bush and gave no real thought to their origin as they threw the money around like wedding confetti in the form of social welfare.

Ever since then, they have suffered from slow economic growth. Gee, it’s a good job that their defense bills were so low thanks to America, otherwise they would have gone bankrupt long ago.

Then of course the policies of the left continue to hurt them in other ways: their liberal immigration policy has seen huge swathes of third world immigrants make their way to Europe, where they live in state subsidized housing, claim billions in state benefits (without ever having contributed a penny of taxes), enjoy free socialized health care (with which they give birth to babies at 12 times the rate of their indigenous hosts), while simultaneously demanding that the law be rewritten to accommodate Islam. Anytime they don’t get what they want handed to them on a silver platter, they create a stink and in some cases, riot. All the while, the radicals among them, who are protected by the wider community, plot and scheme to blow up their generous hosts in terrorist attacks.

The liberal trolls on this site who promote the European model are about as ignorant and short sighted as they come. Europe is NO model and I say that as a European myself. “Bleeds Blue” and co have a very limited perception of the world outside of America and like most leftists, are so whiny and unappreciative of what makes America so superior that they feel they have to romanticize other parts of the world that they know nothing about.

I’m pretty sure there is also an aspect of populations “growing into” policies. Some socialist policies start off small because few people qualify for or use them, but can go from an insignificant fraction of a nations production to a large portion as people adjust their lives to fit into them. So, even if policy doesn’t change, the degree to which it imposes socialism on the system can.

Doctor, this piece should be required reading for every school student in America. But alas, that won’t happen.

I loved this article because it shows how that while
capitolism isnt perfect it does allow for the smal guy to get ahead..
While socialism only workd for the big fat cats who are already millionaires and well connected..

This is exactly why hollywood WANTS socialism.
Because then they call all of the shots and still get to keep their money (but all of us will be screwed)..

Were it not for capitalism, Moore would simply be another fat union member who had just been laid of by GM. Odd that so many of the Hollywood Elite seem to forget where their wealth comes from – or perhaps not. Talent usually doesn’t equate with brains. The more talented the artist (and like it or not Moore is talented) the less likely they have any brains. Moore once again proves that truth. Doctor Zero once again provides us with brilliant analysis and has much to say. Should be mandatory reading in all colleges (now that another story – again, great talent in the academic scene does not equate with brains) – and in high school. The Doctor needs more exposure.

The architects of the State can have all the good intentions in the world – they can be paragons of selfless virtue – and it doesn’t change a thing. The nature of the system they create will inevitably corrupt it, because the nature of the people trapped in the system doesn’t change.

I keep pounding this into my liberal friend’s heads and they just deny it. One cannot fight that kind of forced ignorance.

In short, a shallow, juvenile rant.

You lost all your points here. Strange too, because you were actually making a coherent argument!
