CNN “Fact Checks” SNL Skit!

This frankly sounds like a bit of shtick itself, but CNN last night “fact checked” the SNL skit that was a send-up of Obama (h/t James Taranto). The segment included an interview with Bill Adair of the St. Petersburg Times’s PolitiFact. (Oh, goody, another fact-checking outlet.) Said Adair,

I think “SNL” tended to kind of gloss over what is a–a fair amount of progress by this administration, about sending two additional brigades to Afghanistan. We rated that had a promise kept. On Iraq, “Saturday Night Live” said not done and, of course, that’s true, they’re not done. But they hadn’t promised to be done by now.

Okay, class, let’s review the number of times CNN and/or PolitiFact “fact checked” SNL skits about George W. Bush. Better still, do you remember the investigation into SNL’s not terribly flattering send-up of Sarah Palin by Tina Fey?

Better still, what about CNN’s or PolitiFact’s in-depth nightly investigation into the comedic stylings of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, or David Letterman?

Fact-checking jokes is simply too off-the-wall to deserve serious comment. But of you are going to fact-check jokes, why limit your concern to shots taken at a president you support and worked hard to get elected, while ignoring jokes about a president you despised, justifiably or not.
