Not really. If Reid, et al can come up with a Democrat consensus — at least to the degree that it doesn’t include potential dealbreakers like the “public option” — they may be able to get 60 votes to proceed to the bill. Lefties could then seek to amend to include the “public option,” but somehow (wink), no version proposed gets 51 votes. Other issues could be passed (or not), so long as the basic elements remain and the dealbreakers are gone.

If they try to piggy back this thing on a bill and try to fool people into voting for it we should storm the senate that throw them out!
This is just too important for dems to play political games with and if they try it, it could get ugly for them nationally.

He’s got somewhere between 50-60 votes to work with. You can do a lot of damage with that, but you can’t pass any old bill you want, either.

I’ll buy that, but it still means he has to rely on reconciliation to pass most of it. Whichis something you’re saying he can’t do for at least a couple weeks yet. A lot can change in DC over 2 weeks (especially if Breitbart’s got more bombshells on the way, something I thought he said are all ready to go this week or next). I’m just surprised Reid’s even thinking about tipping his hand like this right now.

If they take the House bill and “blank it out” and fill it with a healthcare bill, surely that would unconstitutional. All of these scenarios simply indicate that the democrats are in disarray, and that’s a good thing. However, I never underestimate their desire for power. They will do whatever it takes.

Update x4: Reid has cancelled the Columbus Day recess so that lawmakers can focus on passing healthcare reform legislation during the week of Oct. 12 — which points against the Heritage scenario of ramming it through next week. It also points against Reid choosing reconciliation, as he cannot do that before Oct. 15.

But if he doesn’t have the votes now, that he already knows he can rely on at that point, then this is political suicide. Is it possibly a way for the Dems to appoint a new Majority Leader in the near future, and simply walk away from a Reid loss next year? Preemptive damage control, as it were? A face-saving measure within the party to get us “Secretary Reid” or “Ambassador Reid”?

I cannot see how reconciliation can work because of the associated budgetary requirements. Everyone who is promoting that idea either glosses over issue this or ignores it entirely.

To be passed through reconciliation, a measure has to be revenue-neutral. How are they possibly going to do that with this plan? That’s far from the only problem, but it’s a heck of a big one.

And no, it does not count if you budget in the revenue to be gotten from your herd of winged unicorns crapping golden cheerios.
