David Frum’s “New Majority” Is Bad News for Conservatives
posted at 3:43 pm on September 30, 2009 by Michael van der Galien

With his relentless criticism of Glenn Beck and other powerful conservative voices, and his attempt to “redefine conservatism,” New Majority-founder David Frum is hurting the movement he professes to love. Case in point, his recent appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
As most members of the self-anointed intellectual elite, Morning Joe’s crew doesn’t quite understand that distrust of government is deeply ingrained in American culture and history. Democrats didn’t take back the House, the Senate and the White House because voters suddenly fell in love with leftist ideology or out of love with conservatism, but because Republicans failed to deliver on their promise to cut government and to keep it out of people’s lives. It was not conservatism, but politicians who falsely identified themselves as conservatives, that earned the distrust of the electorate.
The actual problem in this debate isn’t related to conservatism but to Frum’s inability to identify the real problem.
You don’t have to redefine conservatism. In fact, it cannot be done. If you attempt to redefine it, change its very core, it is no longer conservatism but an entirely new, different political theory (dare I say ideology?).
If Frum would just call for more creativity in order for conservatives to develop policies that deal with todays problems, American conservatives would be wise to listen to him. But that isn’t what he’s trying to do. No, Frum wants you guys to redefine the principles that form the very foundation of Anglo-Saxon conservatism. And that, it seems to me, is a tragic mistake because those principles aren’t some nice and fancy theories but laws that govern the universe.
Unless Frum changes natural law itself, I don’t quite see how his efforts help rather than hurt the conservative movement in the States.

It was not conservatism, but politicians who falsely identified themselves as conservatives, that earned the distrust of the electorate.
This is true…but there is more to it then that.
The Obamedia convinced swing voters that the Republicans were running the congress in 2006-8 and convinced them to throw the bums out.
They also convinced the public that Bush’s moderate domestic policies were far right wing.
And further, that Obama was a tax cutting budget hawk.

Actually David Frum is irrelevant. He is just another foil that hostile media uses when they need a “conservative” to talk about how racist, homophobe, antiquated etc the republican are.
Secondly he is from Canada. Mark Steyn wrote a good article on this, I can’t find a link
Frum is just another useful idiot. Some people float in and out of this category throughout there careers.
Kathleen Parker, Peggy Noonan, David Brooks etc etc
Even Jack Kemp played this role in his later years, every time someone in the media wanted a conservative to talk about how Republicans don’t reach out to minority’s he was there.
Frum is trying to stake out a niche market in the blogoshere , that is all, nothing to see here.

This guy is a loser, but a relentless one. The question is how to deal with him: ignore or challenge him. I think he needs to be challenged at every turn. Having losers like Frum around can actually clarify things, and point out the modern affliction of masochistic, elitist counterfeit “conservatism.”

Oh, give it up! Frum, morning Joe or whatever stupid moniker he uses, and you, whoever you are, should just get lost.

I think this is the article you’re looking for. It’s far too kind to Frum. I wouldn’t tar all of Canada with this guy.

Considering his apparent high opinion of his own intellect and/or political savvy vis a vis other conservatives, I think David really wouldn’t mind becoming the head of a new movement (Frumism?) where he sets out the game plan and the drones do as they are told.
