Nothing to see here, Just Obama’s Buddy Michael Moore Using the Alinsky-Rules

Politico reports that leftist documentary filmmaker Michael Moore has warned Blue Dog Democrats not to oppose President Obama’s health care plan. “To the Democrats in Congress who don’t quite get it: I want to offer a personal pledge. I – and a lot of other people – have every intention of removing you from Congress in the next election if you stand in the way of health care legislation that the people want,” Moore said.
“That is not a hollow or idle threat. We will come to your district and we will work against you, first in the primary and, if we have to, in the general election.”
He singled out Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and an opponent of the so-called public option:
“You’ve made a serious mistake,” he warned Baucus.
Moore also called out Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), who supports the public option, but whose role in financial regulation as chairman of the Senate banking committee comes in for criticism in “Capitalism.” Speaking to Public Citizen, Moore said, “we’re going to lose this seat unless we run another Democrat” and said he’d “already received a phone call from a well known Democrat to tell me to back off Sen. Dodd.”
It’s typical Moore, typical leftist, typical Democrat and, dare I say, typical Alinsky. Here’s rule number nine of Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals:
“The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.” Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist. (Perception is reality. Large organizations always prepare a worst-case scenario, something that may be furthest from the activists’ minds. The upshot is that the organization will expend enormous time and energy, creating in its own collective mind the direst of conclusions. The possibilities can easily poison the mind and result in demoralization.)
It seems to me that there’s also a bit of rule eight in there (“work against you, first in the primary then in the general” – in other words, constantly and from all sides):
“Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)
And, of course, rule number one, the appearance of power:
RULE 1: “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.” Power is derived from 2 main sources – money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood. (These are two things of which there is a plentiful supply. Government and corporations always have a difficult time appealing to people, and usually do so almost exclusively with economic arguments.)
Michael Moore: Just another friend of Obama using Alinsky’s tactics against all those who dare disagree with the far-left’s radical agenda for America.
Also read this post. Money-quote:
Geist and Hazlett forgot to mention that while Moore may blame “the rich” for all of society’s ills, he is actually a multi-millionaire himself. Yes, he dresses like a hobo, but Moore became extraordinarily rich by “picking the target [i.e. 'the rich,' conservatives, etc.], freezing it, personalizing it, and polarizing it” — precisely in the manner outlined by the famed radical “community organizer” Saul Alinsky.
The documentary filmmaker may publicly advocate abolishing the capitalist system and replacing it with “democracy,” as Hazlett says, but without capitalism he would have been a nobody living in a tent, rather than an immensely wealthy individual residing in a big, comfortable house.
Exit question: He’s an Alinsky-ite and a hypocrite – does that make him the average lefty?

Who is the ‘we’ in we will come to your district? Does this fool have a following or something?

Can you imagine the taxes to be collected from moore’s fat-ass fart emissions? And if they pass a tax for ugly this dude will be wiped out financially.
Ris4victory on September 29, 2009 at 3:18 PM
Jeanie, the “we” are about two things:
1. To strike fear into the hearts of blue dogs
2. To give people the impression of power
And, do they have that power? Well, some, they do have some people willing to work against blue dogs. But not half as much as Moore wants you to believe.
That’s a bit ad hominem.
But uh: he’d better hope no ‘fat-tax’ is introduced

I hope the Blue Dogs tell MM exactly where he can go. Besides, with ACORN in the (hopefully) process of being effectively neutered, where’s he going to get the footsoldiers for his effort?
Bob's Kid on September 29, 2009 at 3:35 PM
Bob’s Kid: the only problem I have with people celebrating the fall of ACORN is that everyone’s forgetting that these people are unlikely to just go away. They’ll come back, just in different organizations and under a different name.
+ ACORN isn’t the only far-left organization (that uses Alinsky’s methods) with the footsoldiers necessary to make life difficult for Blue Dogs and other critics of ObamaCare.
More importantly, though: Remember, Moore is simply using tricks to intimidate opponents. Threatening is just one such trick, nothing more, nothing less.

Does anyone seriously believe that this gasbag will waste any time or his own capital putting the screws to Democrats? What a waste of human breath. What is he going to do, make one of his infamous mockumentaries of them? It will crash and burn worse than Sicko and his latest screed against capitalism. Moore knows his days as a useful clown for the far left are numbered, and he’s scrambling to seem relevant.

I agree, but I am hoping that people (besides political junkies like we are) have their number now and such activities will be harder to carry out in the future.
Which is why I hope the Blue Dogs don’t fall for that trick. Fingers crossed!
Bob's Kid on September 29, 2009 at 4:04 PM
Ha, if only that were so. I think that at the very moment conservative political junkies stop pushing this subject, the masses will forget about it pretty soon, also because the media do everything in their power to speed that process up a bit.
I think that conservatives have to keep the pressure on constantly, identify these people and these groups constantly, and then and only then will voters turn their backs on them permanently. In other words, this is a fight conservatives chose once, now they will have to continue fighting for, at the very least, years to come.
ProfShade: possibly, but the problem isn’t that he doesn’t have the footsoldiers, but that quite some Blue Dogs may think he does even if he doesn’t. That’s his strategy – and it has worked in the past.

By the way, thanks for the many comments – you guys (and gals?) made this thread but also all my other threads at the Greenroom quite successful and, more importantly, a pleasure to read (for me and others).

Whom, exactly, constitutes the Moore constituency? From what I know of Moore, to know him is to loathe him. As an employer, I understand he resembles the pre-enlightened Ebenezer Scrooge. Fearing Moore and his legion is a comical thought. And his so-called ‘best’ work is behind him. His films are more & more anemic at the box office and disappear quickly.
thegreatbeast on September 29, 2009 at 4:46 PM
Don’t really know who he implies when Moore says “We”. All I know is that OUR “We” are the very bunch that showed up at the capitol on September 12th; which by the way are more powerful than his “We”. Better yet, Moore may very well be talking about his “Wii” sitting in front of his television.
lonestr on September 29, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Isn’t it funny that when societies abolish capitalism, they also abolish democracy too?
Of course, Moore and his ilk have little interest in democracy in anything other then appearance.

Hypocrite is the word for this piece of human excrement.
elclynn on September 30, 2009 at 7:57 AM
lonestr: “Wii” I love it! Yeah, I don’t think many people will heed Moore’s call to man the Blue Dog barricades, but as Michael said, many Blue Dogs might just be frightened enough by the threat….but at the townhalls, the BDs saw REAL opposition.
