Your Unofficial ‘Ongoing Self-Destruction of LGF’s Charles Johnson’ Thread

posted at 6:14 pm on September 21, 2009 by

Last night, Ace of Spades complained that his commenters have been hijacking every thread to discuss the disastrous self-immolation of Charles Johnson — what Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit has called the “Little Green Meltdown.”

Ever since he attacked me for covering the 9/12 March On DC, I’ve been at war with Johnson, having sworn the ancient Gaelic war oath of Clan Cameron: Chlanna nan con thigibh a so’s gheibh sibh feoil! (“Sons of the hounds, come here and get flesh!”)

In case you’re joining the story in progress, Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs was once among the most influential conservative bloggers. He co-founded Pajamas Media, but left PJM in 2007 and, shortly thereafter, began to see “fascists” everywhere:

So far as I can discover, this all started in October 2007 when Johnson attacked Pamela Geller, a longtime blog-buddy of mine, for attending a “counter-jihad” conference in Brussels, Belgium. . . .
Johnson began throwing more and more conservatives under his Little Green Bus, calling them “fascists” and so forth. The monomaniacal relentlessness of his attacks has finally compelled nearly every conservative blog — including such stalwarts as Powerline, Riehl World View, Gateway Pundit, Ace of Spades and The Jawa Report, to name but a few — to repudiate Johnson, and Michelle Malkin’s HotAir.com recently designated LGF a “Left” site.

You can read the rest of that, but the story isn’t over yet. With the can’t-look-away horror of driving past a deadly car wreck, the entire conservative blogosphere has been gripped with lurid fascination as Johnson continues his self-destructive path to full-bore left-wing lunacy.

As the disillusioned ex-Lizards who’ve formed 2.0 Blogmocracy now chronicle on a daily basis, Johnson and his hench-people are conducting a relentless purge at Little Green Footballs, banning anyone suspected of disloyalty. Yesterday, Johnson banned three long-time LGF commenters: Shug, Baldilocks and Da Tech Guy. Johnson’s atavistic scheme of banning his way to blogospheric glory inspired a video that Ace posted last night:

Having offered my own blog as a recovery zone for members of the growing fraternity of Ex-Lizards Pseudonymous, I’ve noticed the same distracting ”let’s talk about LGF” problem in the Hot Air comments that Ace has been experiencing. So without authorization from anyone, I’ve created this Green Room post. If Hot Air commenters want to discuss the Madness of King Charles and the vindictiveness of his evil hench-person Sharmuta, do it here.

Exit question: Is Charles actually crazy enough to follow through on his April threat to smear The Boss?

Can’t all conservatives at least agree that Glenn Beck is not the enemy?

Not only is Beck not the enemy, there’s good reason to think he’s right. With McCain, we’d probably have a watered-down cap and trade bill passed by now. McCain very well might have destroyed the Republican Party. Obama is resurrecting it.

Anyway, there are inequities that still have to be remedied.
David Blue on September 22, 2009 at 1:21 PM

What you said. To call Pamela Geller a “poster girl for Euro-fascists”?

WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. He had five months to take that back and didn’t, which should have been the final verdict on the credibility of Charles Johnson. It was ignored too long, and as a result, Johnson imagined he could get away with such lies forever. He found out differently, didn’t he?

And now he’s gone after Lila Rose*.

Stacy,

This is the first time I’ve written about this (I’ve barely discussed it on my own blog), and while I promised Charles (and myself) that I wouldn’t disparage him when he banned me, I have to get a few things off my chest.

I don’t know if Charles has found out yet that he can’t get away with anything. His traffic is still way beyond what most of us get (at least if you believe his own stats – he doesn’t use one of the services), so someone is still reading his blog. Maybe it’s Sharmuta clicking the page open all the time, but it’s still an awful lot of hits. And if you read nothing but LGF, the only indication that something’s wrong (aside from the constant bannings) is that when he opens registration, no one signs up anymore.

To people in Israel, Charles Johnson is a big pro-Israel blogger. Most of the people here think of him as the guy who exposed the photoshop in Lebanon during the war. They don’t understand that he’s banned many of the most pro-Israel people on his blog – some of us because we disagreed with him on intelligent design (or avoided posting on his blog because it degenerated into more and more threads about those kinds of topics where if we expressed our views, we’d be gone), and others because he deemed us Kahanists because we expressed views that have become quite mainstream here, but which were once the bailiwick of Meir Kahane. At the Jewish bloggers conference last week, the non-bloggers were shocked that I’ve been banned.

And then there’s the personal side of it. A lot of us who had been there for years (I started posting on LGF in 2002 or 2003 – before there was registration) thought of Charles as our friend. Kind of like the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain. Pam Geller once referred to him as her ‘blog daddy’ and I think that’s the way a lot of us thought of him. When you wake up one morning and discover that your ‘blog daddy’ has publicly attacked you, it gets personal. And that’s why you’re seeing so many attacks on Charles from real conservative bloggers today – because he has betrayed us. But for the people who just read LGF and don’t post and don’t blog themselves – they have no idea what all the fuss is about.

I’d say more but … I have other things I have to do.

For all the worry about mulsim backlash from 9/11 still being pushed in media today, it never materialized. As CJ was a liberal left before 9/11, and has not so quietly reverted, I see his civil discourse was hijacked that day too. All of his anti-jihad should be regarded as religiously motivated attacks.

While, to my knowledge, he never physically acted upon his new reasonable fear, it is hate crime projection none the less for him. How else to explain his shift of attacks on messengers of koran and other muslim books admonitions to slaughter the infidel, which Muslims acted upon during 9/11, while ignoring the over 14,000 terror attacks since 9/11 and growing detailed at TheReligionOfPeace.com — Yuri?

Viper1 on September 22, 2009 at 4:53 PM

I found LGF around 2002 or so, and it was a great site, with some of the funniest commenters on the web. While some note the Rathergate and Lebanon fauxtography as his claim to fame, to me his tireless work of exposing and cataloging the terrible character of the Palestinians, in general, and of the subhuman character of Hamas, Hezbollah, the PLO, etc, will always stick in my mind as his crowning achievement.

It seems to me, now, that the work he did there is indicative of the never let go, bulldog tenacity that we see now, and into the obsessive. Whether it is a character flaw or an attitude developed and, now deep set, of many years is hard for me to say. I did follow his blog daily even into the Vlams Belang(?), for lack of a better identifier, controversy for while, but haven’t read him since.

I’m kind of with Baldilocks in my attiude wrt CJ. He’s got a problem, it’s mostly his problem not the problems others have, and I hope he solves or comes to terms with it.

BTW, LGF was never a conservative and I don’t think he ever considered himself such. I highly doubt he had much in common with conservatives other than where his opinion on the war on terror and Muslim fundamentalism (oh, and his now obvious hatred of fascism) intersected with them.

[Aristotle on September 22, 2009 at 4:20 PM]

Why do you say that? I haven’t really followed the Charles’ tirades on European facism, creationism and now racism. I’m just asking because I don’t see the connection or have missed a few things.

Dusty on September 22, 2009 at 5:04 PM

I follow the dwama on other blogs for the lulz, but I’ve had it with Chuckles and whatever his mental problem is. As far as I’m concerned, he can frak himself.

Folks are upset because they feel stabbed in the back. Well, yeah they were stabbed in the back by a guy they thought they could trust. But those who have no loyalty are not worth the wasted pixels. The key is to find folks you can trust, and do your own damn research. I lurk more than I post nowadays, my work keeping me busy—but I’m mostly here, facebook and at Ace’s now.

The Other McCain: “BEST. BLOG. HEADLINE. EVAH!

:) So obviously everyone should go and read that post. :)

It must have seemed terrible to R.S. McCain when Charles Johnson libeled him, but a lot of people – including Pamela Geller, alleged “poster girl for Euro-fascists” – would not have gotten the justice they are getting now if that had not happened.

Charles Johnson’s hit list reads like a “who’s who” of pugnacious conservatives, and the people he attacked didn’t even mistrust him, let alone attack him, till one after another he went for them. Even then, he continued to have standing among conservatives, and he got kindness from his confused and shocked victims. The normal reaction was Pamela Geller’s first response: that this had to be some sort of misunderstanding, and she didn’t want to escalate it.

This had to end.

It’s the right week for making ashes and stubble of Charles Johnson’s reputation among conservatives.

There’s two more reasons why Charles Johnson should be damned in perpetuity, that ought to appeal to conservatives of a practical mind.

First, he’s got nothing to bring to the table. He’s proven to be a serious, major and consistent liar, which means his archives have nothing of value in them. Nothing he’s said is worth quoting unless you check it all himself, so he doesn’t save you any time. He doesn’t have the usual virtue, for a high traffic conservative blogger, of having been checked up on, even a little, by his readers. Even if you’re willing to wade through long and trivial comment threads to see if anybody brought up any facts that called Charles Johnson’s line into question, for all you know one of his commenters brought up something that blew what he said out of the water, and he banned them and deleted their refutation. Finally, even if you’ve checked everything, you can’t quote him without inviting everyone to say “if you believe Charles Johnson about that, you should also believe him about [insert his slams on many pugnacious conservatives]“. Looking up what he wrote can never do any good; it only does harm when naive people read him and believe the terrible things he says about people.

Second, someone who will rat you out once will rat you out twice. Even if Charles Johnson said “sorry” now, which he definitely will not do, how could anyone sensible believe that if conservative bloggers tried to give him a fresh start and restore his credibility from now on, he wouldn’t make them regret it down the road? What rewards and acceptance among conservatives has he not already enjoyed, and rejected in favor of the pleasures of damning as fascists Europeans he knows next to nothing about, and whose countries, problems and politics he knows next to nothing about? On the evidence of his actions, he likes condemning people as fascists, truth and justice be damned, and he doesn’t like playing Rikki-tikki-tavi (Run and find out!”). How is anyone with those tastes not going to wind up doing cheap shots for the Left?

Since we already know that kindness to him has been misguided, that any credibility he retains will be put to bad use, and that he doesn’t refrain from going after people because they’ve never spoken a bad word about him, there’s no reason for conservatives to refrain from putting up “Ban Little Green Footballs” signs (link) on their blogs.

It is a positively good thing every time someone posts to say why they are doing this, and that R.S. McCain is a good guy, and that Pamela Geller is innocent of everything Charles Johnson’s malice has invented against her, and so on. Go down the list of people Charles Johnson has smeared, and pick out the ones you know best, the ones you know are all right, and say good things about them. Declare their innocence. Let justice be done, at least as to reputations.

At last. At long, long last.

No links to Hot Air in the comments please.

I’m an Aussie and a big fan of former Prime Minister John Howard. (As a support of America’s cause on and after the 11th of September, 2001, not as a gun-grabber.) I’d like to call everyone’s attention to something he said after 9/11.

“This is no time to be an 80 per cent ally.”

Sure, a blog squabble is a petty thing, but justice is still justice, and it’s a matter of justice that people who have been libeled have their good names fully restored. This is no time to be an 80% ally.

Look at this collage of people Charles Johnson has slimed. (link). Is there one face in that picture you recognize as “one of the good guys”?

Out of Geert Wilders, Ann Coulter, Pamela Geller, Diana West, Bat Ye’or and many others? One person, including Oriana Fallaci, who isn’t alive any more to defend herself, whose good name should be upheld? Then say so!

If circumstances are not sufficiently favorable now, with R.S. McCain having demolished Charles Johnson, with Ace having shown him to be not just wrong but pathetic and ridiculous over Van Jones, and with Hot Air having moved Little Green Footballs to “Left Channels”, when would be the right time to speak up for someone whose good name you think should be upheld?

David Blue on September 22, 2009 at 9:27 PM

I haven’t been to LGF in well over a year now. I stopped soon after Charles entered his “rant” phase with the obsessive threads about creationism and the European group he thought were neo-fascists (I was just not the least bit interested). I started visiting the site after 9/11 and was able to register after a while though I didn’t comment very often even after I did. I enjoyed the banter and the expertise of many of the posters but there was a pretty intense group of anti-Christian/anti-Catholic posters that would highjack a thread and bring it crashing down.

I had always thought Charles was staunchly pro-Israel so it is surprising to learn he has changed. Things over there must be harsh if he has banned Baldilocks and Carl in Jerusalem. I wonder if Zombie’s been banned?

I used to read LGF for one-stop news on the Long War, end of story. When Johnson gave up that beat after the 2006 Israeli-Lebanese/Hezbollah War and started going after fellow anti-jihadis, and focused almost exclusively on evolution (of all things!) for a few months, I had no more use for his site. I’m kind of disappointed to see him now, gone way off the deep end, but that’s the price one pays for believing one’s own press.

“Unprovoked”!?!

Kejda Gjermani lies extraordinarily with her first word, and she carries on from there in the same style.

While this is what an assistant online editor at Commentary thinks and says – and by all means read the whole thing – the time to swords and pray for the poor beguiled soul of Charles Johnson, as though he was not doing harm any more, has not come.

The job is done when people, at least on the right, are no more inclined to damn you as a “poster girl for European fascism” or a “white supremacist” or a “fascist” because Charles Johnson does than they would be because Michael Moore said that about you. Charles Johnson is not a clean, reliable source, and the people he attacks do not have “cooties”. People have to internalize that.

clnurnberg on September 23, 2009 at 12:08 AM

Well Charles has fired back.

R.S., perhaps you could post something about your views on race so that this can be cleared up once and for all?

WisCon on September 23, 2009 at 12:38 AM

I’m fine with R.S. McCain expressing his views on race, which I’m sure are sound as he’s been blogging for a long time and there’s no trace of racism about the man.

But he can’t ‘clear this up once and for all’ by doing so, because ‘this’ isn’t about him, it’s about a large and growing group of conservatives and anti-jihadists that Charles Johnson has libeled.

Charles Johnson can’t possibly be right, unless there’s not a one of them that isn’t a racist / fascist / white supremacist / bigot / whatever. All you have to do is find someone on Charles Johnson’s target list who you read and trust, just one, and defend them, and you’ve picked your side, and it’s the opposite of Charles Johnson’s side.

(In my case, I’ve been reading Robert Spencer for years, so I’ve known for years that Charles Johnson has been up to no good.)

You don’t have to do the reading for every separate person that Charles Johnson smears. And if you did, the task would be endless.

David Blue on September 23, 2009 at 1:06 AM

Aristotle on September 22, 2009 at 11:55 AM

TRUE.

Geochelone on September 23, 2009 at 1:32 AM

No matter what R.S. McCain says about his own views on race, that still doesn’t ‘clear everything up’ because “Pamela Geller: Poster Girl for Eurofascists” is still under attack, and after you defend her too, there’ll be more and more and more targets to defend, allegation by allegation and smear by smear, because Charles Johnson keeps going.

Not even Hercules could clean up the Augean Stables pen by pen and cow by cow. He had to break holes in the walls and let the river though the whole stinking mess. That’s what R.S. McCain has been doing with the sweeping rhetoric of his anti-Charles Johnson posts.

It’s necessary to take this approach, because for years Robert Spencer and others have been defending themselves piecemeal, against libel after libel, and and even though they’ve had truth on their side all along it hasn’t had the proper effect.

Piecemeal uncoordinated defensive actions are not the answer. A swarming offensive is the answer. There’s no other way to defend all the many people Charles Johnson has already attacked and will later attack.

If you won’t accept the need for a general counter-attack, when one person unjustly attacks so many, then you might as well write off any thought of an anti-jihadist movement. And then pro-lifers, as Charles Johnson doesn’t like us either, and he’s likely to get around to smearing people on that account. (Why wait for him to start, since we already know his methods?) And our Christian friends. And the whole Tea Party movement. And the targets of his next obsession, whatever that will be.
