Obama Doesn’t Understand the True Spirit of 9/11

Yesterday, a number of people, including Hot Air’s own Doctor Zero, wrote impassioned, heart-felt essays that solemnly reflected on the grievous loss America sustained on 9/11 and on the spirit and resolve Americans have historically shown in the face of adversity. Nowhere has that unconquerable spirit — the American Spirit — been better exemplified than in the courage and selflessness shown aboard Flight 93 on that fateful day in 2001. Who can forget Tod Beamer’s last words, “Let’s roll,” before he and his fellow passengers stormed their captors and forced the plane down in a barren field far from harm’s way.
Among the commentaries I read yesterday are two I wish I hadn’t. Both were by Barack Obama, a man with an ego so massive that he is not content to add his two cents but rather needs to add four. The first commentary was the transcript of a speech, delivered live at the Pentagon Memorial Park. Like most of his speeches, this one was filled with high-blown, pseudo-patriotic oratory that must have sounded impressive to those lacking the capacity to hear between the lines. The other appeared in the New York Daily News. Like the speech, it was little more than lofty-sounding, soulless rhetoric, feigning emotion.
One line from the Daily News article was accorded its own paragraph but rang especially hollow: “Every year on this day, we are all New Yorkers.” As a New Yorker every day — I live in midtown Manhattan, a few miles northeast of Ground Zero — I take offense at this would-be gesture of solidarity. Based on the company he keeps, it is hard enough for me to think of Obama as a fellow American, let alone a New Yorker. Let’s not forget that one of Obama’s associates, Bill Ayers, was part of a group that attempted to destroy the Pentagon years before Al Qaeda tried the same thing, while Obama’s mentor, Jeremiah Wright, declared in his “9/11 sermon” that the attacks were “America’s Chickens . . . coming home to roost!”
This was Obama’s first 9/11 as president. I would have preferred he just sat back silently and let the nation reflect on the events of eight years ago and mourn its loss. At the very least he could have made the occasion non-political. But Barack will be Barack, which is why he had to remind anyone paying attention that he has attempted to usurp 9/11 and rebrand it in his own image as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. As he said standing in the shadow of the Pentagon:
Let us renew the true spirit of that day. Not the human capacity for evil, but the human capacity for good. Not the desire to destroy, but the impulse to save, and to serve, and to build. On this first National Day of Service and Remembrance, we can summon once more that ordinary goodness of America — to serve our communities, to strengthen our country, and to better our world. [Emphasis added]
Interesting for Obama to tout “service,” as he construes it, on the very day that ACORN, a group of organizers with which he has a long history, made news that is anything but flattering to itself or him.
As to renewing the spirit of 9/11, patriotic Americans have done this admirably year after year without any prompting from Obama. As for serving, we New Yorkers and Americans know perfectly well how to do that, too. It has nothing to do with inciting mobs to march and wave signs and shout threats as a way of demanding more government entitlements. On the contrary, I saw Americans serving Americans on the original 9/11, when I walked over to Bellevue Hospital a few blocks from my apartment to donate blood. I was turned away because so many other people had had the same idea but had arrived before me. That’s the true spirit of 9/11 — that is truly serving your fellow man — and it’s something Barack Obama and his kind will never understand.

Howard can I be American and a New Yorker for just one moment to express my sympathy and solidarity with you at this time.
Eighteen Australians lost their lives that day. We stand together like never before.
On my recent trip to the USA we had a few days in New York – actually it was only 1 full day, but 2 nights. New York itself is a vibrant city, and I liked Manhattan the second time around. I did not visit ground zero. I guess I just did not have the will to go there. I did see the spot on the Hudson where the plane landed and those lives were saved
.
Howard, you are right the true service happened on the original 9/11/01 and what this mans offers is something that is at the very least, mealy-mouthed.
Last night I had the displeasure of dealing with a dumbass Truther on Facebook. The absurdity of the arguments is just too unreal. The Michael Moore meme about buildings and the struts, and why didn’t the tower fall one way instead of another way…. sick… sick… However, the most laughable aspect of this Trutherism has to be “The Norwood Project”. This Truther told me to look it up…. in the end I did a Google search… oh boy… is that their angle? The Norwood Project, for those who do not know relates to what the CIA wanted back in 1962 under none other than Jack Kennedy – JFK – but Kennedy obviously ruled against it. In fact it is true that the CIA wanted a disaster in America so that they could go to war against Cuba…. The documents relating to the Norwood Project were released in 1997. So it seems that this not so secret action is what Bush was supposed to be acting upon?….. wow Moore really stretches the imagination of gullibility!!!!!!!
Wait, there is more…. the Truther then opined about the composition of a Jet engine. Now I have not looked up that information at the moment… but I might just to see how wrong Moore and the other Truthers are when it comes to aircraft…. I think I might have the advantage over them when it comes to aircraft… ROFL…. there is an aeronautical engineer in the family… no me, my husband… ROFL
These Truthers are sick, very sick individuals. They really should be locked up… and Barry can be locked up with them.

Maggie, thanks for reaching out. You are twice the American and New Yorker many on the left will ever be. As for visiting 9/11, my son attended high school 4 blocks from the site, but I’ve never summoned up the courage to visit Ground Zero myself. The pain remains too palpable.
My sympathies to you and all Australians for your loss on 9/11.

From the day bho was born, he has had it in his mind to crater our Republic. I have no idea why, but with the people he has been around, he is getting his wish. I just pray enough America’s will stand up and not make us what his vision has in store. My faith says, God made this nation that has so many humans and resourses to compete with the whole world. For years we did it. Now, in a few months, we are going down the drain with the last pres. election. What bho said on Sept. 11 was not what we American’s think, that is what he thinks. bho, I will not submit, thank you very much!

That quote from Obama’s speech actually bothered me a lot. No offense to New York, but a lot of people died in D.C. and Pennsylvania as well. IMO, 9/11 brought us all together as AMERICANS, a concept I believe is foreign to Obama. He just doesn’t get it.

It wasn’t from an article publishing in the NY Daily News, so presumably it was written for New Yorkers. He also made a speech at the Pentagon, and no one from Shanksville, PA died as a result of Flight 93.
Believe me, I’m not justifying his actions, just explaining his likely rationale.

The Won and his cohorts will never understand what it means to be an American. If they did, they would never work so hard to change the country. Someone please, tell him that Wall St is all about risk.

I understand the feeling of revulsion hearing Barry talk about all being New Yorkers. I hope that doesn’t apply to the rest of us. It’s a feeling I’m proud to have, not one I would’ve had before 9/11/01. The North, and NYC in particular, have…a certain stereotype in the South. In the days after 9/11, with the stories that came out, I can say that I’ve never been so happy to have been wrong. I was immensely proud of the people of NYC and environs. Your toughness, patriotism, fellowship with your neighbors, was a fine example for us across the country, and across the world to see.
