Worse than we imagined?

I think so.
Obama’s plans to pipe himself into the nation’s public schools to address our children next week has caused some commentators to cast their minds back to the craziness of last fall and winter when conservatives were picking up on some cultish vibes from Obama and his supporters. Laura Ingraham played a bit of the Obama youth anthem yesterday on her radio show.
And Michelle Malkin, in response to another lefty teacher gone wild, has resurrected the idiotic Hollywood Obama pledge.
Joe the Plumber’s utterance of the ‘s’ word was controversial and resonant at the time. Now, ten months later, in the face of multiple government-expanding bills, industry intimidation and takeovers, legally-questionable appointments of dozens of political czars, Orwellian tactics, and a frenzied rush to ram his policies through, “socialist” has gone from stinging indictment to mere descriptor.
And the more Americans see of Obama’s socialist policies the less they like them. See the latest CNN poll on healthcare reform.
Chris commented here in response to the question asked in the title:
Part of why Obama is worse than expected is the fact that none of us expected him to be so completely a Chicago pol. He really does not care a fig for American history, traditions and institutions. He thinks he can just take whatever he wants any way he wants to. I think part of that comes from his lifetime of being a spoiled affirmative action baby. No one in the Democrat party will ever say no to a well spoken, clean, accomplished Ivy League black.
And then there is the whole cult of personality thing that’s becoming more and more obnoxious. This is foreign and disgusting to the conservative mind set. But it is second nature to the progressive’s view of the world. Look at the worship of FDR and the Kennedys. And the left’s rabid and pathological hate campaigns against McCrathy, Nixon, Bush, Limbaugh, Palin and Beck could be called a cult of counter-personality. It’s the same pathology at play except all the worship and obsequiousness becomes malignant hate and piling on.
Most American politicians at least pay lip service to the constitution. For some reason Barry doesn’t think he needs to. I suspect rising too far too fast with no vetting makes incompetence in the White House inevitable.

He forgot Reagan in the liberal Pantheon of Hate.
Big omission.

I have always been amused (although that has lately become “afeared”) by Lefties love of tyranny (think East Germans pining for Communism, or Liberals for dictatorships, however “benign”).
The author is spot on about Obama having no underpinning of or love for tradition and history–or understanding of why such things are important. At this point, I only hope it gets worse faster. Perhaps we can enjoy a “V” style (political) recovery?

“…the fact that none of us expected him to be so completely a Chicago pol.”
I’m not sure to whom the “us” refers, but most conservatives saw Obama for what he was/is — a radical Leftist who spent his entire political career being mentored by radical Chicago pols, Communists, Marxists, Socialists and racists — and warned people he would bring that background to the White House. In response, we were called racists and fearmongers and were told we were smearing him with guilt by association.
So I don’t really feel sorry for anyone who has been surprised by what Obama has done as President. He had an entire career of radicalism and he has brought it to the White House, just as many of us warned.

I think I’m surprised not by the agenda but by the haste, the aggressive push on so many fronts at once. This “big bang” tactic was a gamble and I’m hoping it will backfire.

“[the cult of pesonality] is second nature to the progressive’s view of the world. Look at the worship of FDR and the Kennedys.”
In fact it runs like an inherited strain of disease through leftist ideology. Not only was the cult of personality part of Stalin, Mao, Castro’s etc. design for power, all were also worshipped by western “progressives”, at least until it became politically untenable to do so.

Now….Let’s not forget how the Lefties approached this problem back in 1991! What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Obama ran as a tax cutting budget hawk.
He is governing as a tax raising socialist.
This certainly vindicates Joe the Plumber over his critics…but then again no one in the media who was defending Obama at the time actually doubted that Obama was a socialist. It was just an inconvenient truth.
